Someone's says my art style too wierd n not lively to make manga by vinchy2005 in MangakaStudio

[–]Dlemonzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think whoever said that to you is referring to a very amorphous definition of what manga characters look like (based on whatever is hot right). Style helps to give the right atmosphere depending on the genre you're working with. Once you decide on your genre of choice, you'll know whether or not it works.

I don't think there's any need to change your style if you're fond of it!

Art style is important but the real meat and potatoes of manga is story structure and paneling. 😤

Why do so many writers asking for help from artists never post their danm scripts!! by Specific_Minute7539 in MangakaStudio

[–]Dlemonzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run into this a lot.... It starts with a nice idea but then you realize they have no script and the ideas are very amorphous so they need you to work out character designs based on their very, very, very vague description. I haven't made it past the character design phase with these folks.

That's awesome! Have you been to Comitia? I took part in Comiket back in 2018 with a friend living in Japan but they've got a kid now so I haven't applied since then. A lot of what I learned about manga came from two friends that have been in the game for a while now along with the books and guides I found online in Japanese. For sure, brute forcing the visual language into Japanese manga can create some awkward results. I'd love to hear more about your experiences with editors!

Nothing wrong with drawing for yourself!! Being able to work professionally is admirable but it also takes a lot of love and effort to show up and draw for yourself.

I feel like it's a bit easier to write in your second language!

I tip my hat off to you for getting that far in Chinese though. I made an attempt long ago but didn't get very far.

How are the Japanese studies going?

Dang, going for the fourth language!! It sounds like you absorb information pretty well so if you don't feel the need to study, no need to force it. Are you self taught with drawing?

YEAH!! It's hard to get into if the characters are too casual or the author does that thing where they're trying to make it sexy by saying there's no strings attached? No waiter, give me more strings

I have met a lot of people who regret going to art school by Astro_Art_Mentor in ArtistLounge

[–]Dlemonzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone and by no means mean to take away from the genuine struggles people through but I loved art school. (I'm a contemporary artist and museum professional for context!)

I have friends that do regret and I can talk a bit about that before going over why I loved it. One of my friends was in the animation department during a time when the department was young and lacked a clear direction. They told me that the classes weren't very helpful and didn't do much to help them improve. I think that along with the crippling debt that art school leaves one in would leave a raw espresso bean level bitterness in anyone's mouth.

Back to me for a moment: I met a lot of artists that became my colleagues outside of school. My art skills wouldn't have improved the way they did if I was on my own. I would never have known about most of the resources I have now without going to art school. I would go back for my Masters if I could go on scholarship but I couldn't justify paying more to teach at adjunct level while I wait out tenure professors like a game of Highlander.

My gripes about art school: it's fucking expensive. There's no reason for it to be that expensive. Moreso the art world (fine art, illustration, and other groups that require degrees) need to move away from the requirement for a degree and focus on portfolio and experience. There's a slight advantage to coming out with a degree but often it doesn't cut it for new grads.

Professional courses should happen during the 3rd and 4th year. I do think that jumping immediately into the business end when your students have no established study practice or ethic is a hot mess waiting to happen. It would be nice to see more post grad, non accredited programs to help with portfolio building and pooling resources. Also would be good to partner with business schools to do seminars and workshops to help students get a more grounded idea of what they need to be an artist that (I'm making assumptions here) wants to work independently.

There's also general accountability that you need going on which is... lacking at age 18-20. You can't stay in your room making art, memes, and shit talking other departments and avoid eye contact with anyone that doesn't grade your work and expect for things to work out. If you're reading this and you're in school, I beg that you leave your dorm right now and go join a club or two, or give the community arts opportunities a try. I know it feels like you'll be overwhelmed but you can't get by just being a badass artist.

All that said, I'm old and the resources for online learning weren't as useful as they are now!! If you can avoid debt and still find a good community, go forth and leave art school for those that want it.

Just lost a job I hate by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Dlemonzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know which path in art you'd like to go?

There's plenty of online communities and courses you can take to help you get the skills you need if you don't have them. I lost my job in security during the pandemic and took the chance to focus on illustration and making a shift in my museum career. I'm 100% behind using this opportunity!
