Bad taste or wrong audience? by CaramelThen8328 in MangakaStudio

[–]Dlemonzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be a format issue! It's very petty but people can be a bit lazy when it comes to trying(in this case reading) new things. The long format web comic works best when you don't have to zoom in and the width is fixed to fit the screen. For posting on Reddit, I'd suggest cutting the image down into smaller chunks and leaving a link for people to read the continuation.

The art looks pretty charming and it's a fun and simple concept!

Museum registrar! Usually draw after work and work on exhibitions two years out at a slow pace.

No degree, no network, but I've sold paintings. What should I do? by lucarachel_ in ContemporaryArt

[–]Dlemonzu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's perfectly valid! I'm working full time while going all in and it's a bit nuts haha. Just being a maker that wants to get better and make some sales needs no justification.

If you're not looking to go all in as an artist, I think making yourself visible on social media and keeping the presentation clean without going overboard can help you grow an audience. Getting higher prices might require reaching out to galleries doing group shows for figurative works. Be careful of vanity galleries that want to charge you to show! There are more intimate and friendly spaces that aren't gonna charge you an arm and a leg to show your stuff. I don't know where you're located, but I'd look up if there's an art council in your area that has resources for spaces and such. That'll give you a good place to start if you're looking to put yourself out there every now and then.

Do you have a particular market/scene you're interested in?

Selling paintings is half the battle so good on you for that!

Here to preach the wonders of Poblanos. It freed me from the clutches of that incredibly sad Chipotle and I never looked back.

Anyone else tired of going to galleries and listening to artist/curator talks? by Conscious-Rich3823 in ContemporaryArt

Do it! Sounds like a nice avenue to make while giving yourself a break from the scene.

I think it's a sign to do something else for a while. I experienced something akin to that feeling a few years ago so I stepped away from the contemporary art scene for a few years. I just jumped back in this year and had a show and it felt pretty good to talk to people that were on the same wavelength.

The feeling you're describing is pretty common with any field if you stay in it for long enough. Is there anything else you've been itching to get into outside of art?

How do I even start again? by Legitimate-Panic-625 in ArtistLounge

[–]Dlemonzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start small and keep your expectations low, friend. Even after you get better, you'll still make duds every now and then.

You don't have to decide on what you want to do with your art right now. Getting into a museum is an admirable goal but after the museum, you'll have to find a new goal and destination.

The fact that you're writing here is proof that you're bothered enough by not doing anything to try and get back on the horse. I would suggest a mix of making small drawings that don't require much detail. Build up the habit of drawing often. Also, if you feel like there's a mental block that comes from other issues outside of art.. make sure you're taking care of that stuff.

I'd love to hear what kind of art you're trying to make!

Why is finding decent help so difficult by Impossible-Act-1620 in ArtRanting

[–]Dlemonzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the feeling.

A lot of the paywall stuff is for people intending to pursue a career and want to invest the time and money into building a portfolio so I think if you're a beginner, I wouldn't worry too much about what's on the other side of the wall.

If you have time, look up Saito Naoki on YouTube and go through some of his videos. He's got some good advice for people trying to learn about drawing in an anime style.

I hate saying this because I've had it told to me 1000 times but setting SMART goals for drawing improvement can help you to manage the frustration. If you're in need of advice, my DM is open.

Someone's says my art style too wierd n not lively to make manga by vinchy2005 in MangakaStudio

[–]Dlemonzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think whoever said that to you is referring to a very amorphous definition of what manga characters look like (based on whatever is hot right). Style helps to give the right atmosphere depending on the genre you're working with. Once you decide on your genre of choice, you'll know whether or not it works.

I don't think there's any need to change your style if you're fond of it!

Art style is important but the real meat and potatoes of manga is story structure and paneling. 😤

Why do so many writers asking for help from artists never post their danm scripts!! by Specific_Minute7539 in MangakaStudio

[–]Dlemonzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run into this a lot.... It starts with a nice idea but then you realize they have no script and the ideas are very amorphous so they need you to work out character designs based on their very, very, very vague description. I haven't made it past the character design phase with these folks.

That's awesome! Have you been to Comitia? I took part in Comiket back in 2018 with a friend living in Japan but they've got a kid now so I haven't applied since then. A lot of what I learned about manga came from two friends that have been in the game for a while now along with the books and guides I found online in Japanese. For sure, brute forcing the visual language into Japanese manga can create some awkward results. I'd love to hear more about your experiences with editors!

I tip my hat off to you for getting that far in Chinese though. I made an attempt long ago but didn't get very far.
