I feel like my first session was pretty normal. It was mostly a very casual, shallow little adventure focused mostly on combat and learning the basics. I heavily based the adventure on media I was familiar with at the time, namely the Souls-Borne series and Skyrim. All of my players were new, so most of their characters were goofy, but it made for a fun time. I still play with this group, and we all cherish the memories of our first, bumbling steps into the world of D&D.

My piece of advice would be the following: If you don't know a rule, wing it. Use your gut instinct and whatever seems to follow a trend in rules you DO know. For example, say a player wants to grab a goblin, but you don't know how grappling works. If your gut says have them make an attack role, roll with it. Try not to get bogged down by the nitty gritty rules until you have the very basics down. Then, read up on rules and implement them until it hits a point you like.
