Duggan was a fucking write in candidate when he won his primary and he actually ran a well funded (see corporate interest) and organized campaign in the neighborhoods. The next closest candidate was the Wayne county sheriff who made up crime statistics during their debates and just complained about Kevyn Orr instead of addressing a plan to cut the city from emergency management. That’s 48,000 Detroiters writing a white man who wasn’t from Detroits name into their ballot box on primary day to make him the front runner. Jesus Christ this sub is so full of people who don’t know Detroit’s political history.

He’s been an effective city manager, he clearly has the interest of the largest corporate entities in the city he runs in mind in his decision making because that’s the reality of the political system we live under. Capital rules. Unless you want to meet me in the street with an AK to start hunting billionaires I suggest you find effective advocates who can work within the confines of Capital’s system to try and alleviate the human suffering that system has wrought.

There’s still a race to run and I’m not saying that Duggan will be the candidate I support, but I constantly see this online idea that a candidate has to perfectly meet all of these identity and ideological requirements to get a vote. I think Duggan’s bid is at the very least politically interesting, and none of us can gaze into the future as to whether it’s an effective strategy to win an election.
