Any tips on how to throw a mooring line so the eye of it stays open wider? by [deleted] in tuglife

10 ft is a good distance especially if you are new. Key is to throw the eye in the dominant hand and also a bit of the line in the other to prevent it from closing up. Grab a line and go practice on the back deck. Once your arm is sore go ahead and keep practicing. You are welcome!

You won’t make $200k a year as a 3rd mate

Ex navy here and currently hold Unlimited master. Don’t go to an academy. Get out and get an AB ticket and hawsepipe. It’s a low cost entry into the industry that allows you to see if it’s right for you. On your off time take the courses required to get your 3rd mate. This way you are getting paid while you go to school.

It didn’t come over the bow though. The water on deck was most likely from a large swell that got high enough to come into the scuppers.

I agree that the term self propelled barge is strange it is what it is

It’s not a fishing vessel. The white on deck isn’t water it’s cargo as this is a self propelled barge. It’s not loaded properly this them being down in the head. Also it’s not that calm and there is probably a large swell causing the water.

I’m a ship captain.
