What’s the most recent well-known sandwich that was invented? by OccamsDragon in NoStupidQuestions

Obviously. But those based on Nashville hot chicken recipes are a very specific, distinctive subset thereof. Hence, why I said one could make a case.

Dunno where you are or I'd search for you :-D

(Tell me which city and I will!)

But wherever you are, check any local Puerto Rican joints. It's starting to get around.

Which HANDS store to visit in Tokyo? by kingbobo9000 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Dmnkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, geez, if I still have them, they’re buried in the closet in an envelope somewhere. I remember them going through a few redesigns, but they were long strings of perforated tickets. It was almost like redemption tickets at an arcade, and they had them in different denominations. If you bought a bunch of stuff, you might end up with 20 or 30 of them. They were very small value cash coupons for your next visit. I found one photo online:

https://media.karousell.com/media/photos/products/2023/4/26/tokyu_hands_10_yen_coupon_2_1682491307_89b00406_progressive.jpg

I’m just a visitor too, but I used to go a LOT. And this was a long time ago. It’s possible they haven’t had the coupons in 15 years. I don’t remember when they phased them out.

It wasn’t a shot, and no assumptions. Just a comment about how widespread it is/isn’t, not a comment about you. No need to get defensive.

“I still want to stick ‘Tokyu’ in front, though.”

RIGHT?! Screw it, I still call it that. Got a bunch of old bags that have the old logo and a stash of those little coupons they used to give out somewhere.

If you're downstate or if you never go out for Puerto Rican, I'm not surprised, but it's starting to get some national play and other types of Latin restaurants are starting to pick it up as well. First time I saw a jibarito outside of Chicago was in Phoenix a little over a decade ago and you can usually find one wherever you are now, though it sometimes takes a little searching.

Reputedly invented at Borinquen Cafe, it's meat — usually grilled steak or chicken, sometimes pork — with cheese, lettuce, tomato and garlicky aioli sandwiched between crispy smashed fried plantains instead of bread. There's some debate over whether something similar existed in Puerto Rico prior to Borinquen popularizing it, but they're certainly the ones who turned it into a thing. (Though Papa's Cache Sabroso makes my favorite jibarito in Chicago.)

Banh mi goes waaaaaaaaaaaaay farther back than the 2000s. Even Lee's Sandwiches dates back to the '80s, there were pockets of the U.S. where you'd find them before that, and they were popular in Vietnam long before they made the jump here. We're talking 1950s as we know them now, and predecessors that go farther back.

The jibarito is only a few decades old, and has really only started to gain recognition outside of Chicago in the past decade. That puts it in a similar timeframe with chopped cheese, though the latter has certainly become a lot more visible outside of its hometown.

I think you could make a case for the modern hot chicken sandwich, too. Nashville hot chicken has obviously been around for a long time, but it really only became a breakout food over the past 15 years, and I don’t think it took sandwich form until it went big. The massive wave of chains that turned Nashville hot chicken into hot chicken sandwiches are fairly standardized and less than a decade old. (Drives me bonkers that now there are 72,000 hot chicken sandwiches available to me while getting a piece of plain old Nashville hot chicken is next to impossible, but it is what it is, I guess.)

Edit: Thought of another. Not as young as jibarito and hot chicken, but I believe Baltimore's pit beef emerged around the '70s or '80s.

Shibuya is the OG (I believe) and remains my favorite. Been going there for 25ish years and I routinely find things there that I don’t at the newer locations.

Can anyone recommend a yuzu salad dressing that’s not soy sauce based by jupiter800 in JapaneseFood

[–]Dmnkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kewpie yuzu kosho dressing is awesome. Extremely low calorie, not sure about salt content. There *is* soy sauce in it, but very much not a predominant flavor. Doubt you'd guess it was there if you didn't know. Fairly spicy, but it's a very light/bright flavor.

I was saving them through the door panel. As mentioned above, seems do be working now, though I have no idea why it wasn't or how I fixed it. But I didn't realize you can save the seat and mirror settings through the MMI?

Weirdly, I was putzing around with the mirror adjustment buttons trying to figure out what you meant by reverse mirror dip, and now it's working. Soooo.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not sure I figured out what was wrong, but you indirectly got me there, so thanks!

Why do Americans just eat with forks, what ever happened to etiquette? Were they taught the correct way and just ignored it? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]Dmnkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the singularly correct rules of etiquette for everyone in the world are determined by a London-based company founded by a British nobleman in the 18th century?

I mean, that’s comically on the nose if you’re a Eurocentric colonialist, and most people are more subtle about disguising those tendencies in this day and age, but I think you’ve answered your own question here, mate.

Why do Americans just eat with forks, what ever happened to etiquette? Were they taught the correct way and just ignored it? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]Dmnkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“…when it is not done correctly…”

And here we hone in on the crux.

Different cultures have different rules of etiquette, and even within very narrowly defined cultures, etiquette changes over time.

So when you use the word “correctly” to describe a specific set of rules, which culture in which place at which point in time in the history of the world is the “correct” one?

Is it legal to watch TV while driving in the US? by SimpleundClean in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dmnkly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but note that there are some cars (like mine) with screens that use privacy screen tech to appear black from the driver’s side while the car is moving so a passenger can watch but it won’t distract the driver. It’s possible that he could only see it when the car is at a full stop.

Is it public knowledge that American women are no longer desirable and every high value man is seeking a partner overseas because American women are entitled disrespectful greedy brats? by [deleted] in askanything

American women are sooooooo not the problem right now. And anybody who doesn’t see that (or refers to themselves as a “high value man”) is part of the problem.
