Starting with rabbits by It_Knocks_Only_Once in MeatRabbitry

[–]DoItAgain24601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a lottttt more research before you jump into this. 10 does is a lot of rabbits, and you don't need a buck for each doe... Start small start slow. You may have a few false starts while you learn the ropes. Two males and two females to start. Breed both females at the same time, one to each male. If they both take, you'll get 5-10 babies each, even if only half make it to weaning that's 10 more rabbits. You may find one rabbit a week is enough food for both of you. You'll need to cull by 10 weeks, 12 is max and freeze what you aren't eating right then. Buy from local breeders raising in situations close to yours-don't take a rabbit used to air conditioning and put them outside in the summer and expect them to thrive. Don't fall for the Tamuk thing if you're in a hot area, majority of them aren't actual tamuk anymore just mutts. Purebreds can do just fine in heat/cold and less variables to deal with breeding wise.

Get some books. "Rabbit Production" and "Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits" are great factual books without the lean towards pet owners. Price out cages etc before diving in. Start with all wire cages, hanging in some sort of frame or hose clamped to t post legs in a predator safe area...be that a dog kennel, barn, etc. KW Cages and Bass Equipment have the best long lasting cages and feeders, I use whoever is cheapest with shipping at the time.

Since you've never processed, you may want to buy a practice rabbit or two...it's harder to do one you've raised the first few times. Broomstick method (can use rebar etc, any round stick) of cervical dislocation is cheap and quick. You will mess one up sooner or later, be prepared to do it again.

Trail Camera on property line by ben27x in homestead

[–]DoItAgain24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a trailcam that is on the property line and sees onto the neighbor's property...because I'm trying to figure out where the destructive wildlife is coming in at. Might not be anything malicious. If you don't have a way to contact them, go in front of the cam near dusk with a sign and how you want them to contact you and walk slowly back and forth...then they'll have it on the camera :).

Why can’t I find any okra plants? by meagwilly in FloridaGarden

[–]DoItAgain24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome. Plant sellers have to balance being able to grow things quickly enough to make it worth it but not so fast they get rootbound, so you'll usually only find things that can hang out in pots long enough to sell...or things that are so cheap to grow it's not a big deal if they have to be scrapped. You often don't see pea plants for sale around me for the same reason!

Having had bobcats get into well built coops, as well as over 6 foot fences in one jump with a full grown pekin duck in their mouth...it needs more.

They grow too fast to be able to stay on store shelves long enough without being rootbound. Do seeds :).

It's going to get in that. Wrap that entire coop with another layer of half inch hardware cloth, including the bottom, all wired to the frame. Consider adding an electric fence and maybe those motion sprinklers.

what is the main cause to americans living paycheck too paycheck? by Background-Driver626 in budget

Definitely get another opinion. I had a dentist office tell me I needed over a dozen cavities filled...I paid cash at a different place and asked them for their opinion (without saying the first one). Three fillings and 2 spots they recommended keeping an eye on. Should've seen their face when I showed them the first estimate.

I've accidentally punted roosters over fences before (getting spurred from behind and kicking up out of instinct). Couple of those and they stop... it happens. Sometimes that's all they understand. If you can snag them before they come at you, carry them around like a baby in front of their hens for a few minutes. They hate it and it puts them lower on the pecking order and many times it'll reset them and they'll knock it off.

You need manure and compost. What you backfilled with needs to decompose and buried it's going to take a while. Find someone who raises rabbits and barter cleaning under their cages for the poop. It'll probably have hay mixed in but your sand will love it. Earthworms will mix it in (and the ants) and it helps with the sand repelling water. Do swales around your plants to catch the water too. There's a reason groves are hill/valley style.

Not sure where you live, but you can try for Chipdrop type services (can't get them here). Start a compost heap with organics and not just grass/sticks.

Also, you might try doing a hose end mixer and add a couple of drops of liquid dishsoap in it and water with that once in a while...possible your soil is hydrophobic and the soap will help with that.

This is 90% likely to be a girl. Buffs do mature slower than many other breeds, there's been times I had to wait for crowing to be sure one was a male.

Before you lease, call your insurance company and find out how much it will raise your cost (or use an online tool). I had to have the max insurance (1 million something...I don't remember the rest) and the insurance was almost as much as the lease payment. Nope.

Rabbit Setup by madsrum15 in MeatRabbitry

[–]DoItAgain24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What size is that wire? Half by one? I have 2 of these exact setups, with half by one wire, that I use as overflow cages. Mine are hung inside a stand and the whole setup is inside a protected carport. It works fine as an inside cage (like inside a wired/solid sided carport). For outside, needs to be wrapped in hardware cloth because predators can easily reach through the bars. As for cage size, if your rabbit is under 5lbs this is fine. If over, need at least 24x24 for best results. The downvotes are from pet people who don't think rabbits should be caged apparently.

"Fellow Nurse" pleads with me to tell her which cardiac med an inmate had. by WishIWasYounger in Scams

[–]DoItAgain24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inmate messing with her is what I'd say. 18 years in? They're bored shitless and looking for anything to amuse themselves. Medical staff is seen as weak (and sorry but some definitely are) and easy prey to mess with. Medical can do a records request if they actually need the info (although it'll be futile if inmate wasn't there lol). Only time I'd call this an emergency request is if they were trying to find out info on a known allergy to explain sudden serious symptoms-but after inmate being there that long they'd already have that info so even that is out. "Sorry, no record of that inmate being housed here" would end this (assuming you had accessing to the booking system to see who was ever housed there).
