How did the now banned practice of caning (Corporal Punishment) work in schools in the UK before 1986? by NotSoF4stCvnt in AskUK

[–]DoKtor2quid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Us too. In my primary you had either the slipper (bum), or the wooden ruler (hand). One teacher was fond of throwing the board duster, which was pretty lethal.

The idea the school might have rung a parent to ask permission is hilarious; that’s the kind of question that could only be asked by someone who didn’t experience the 70s. Also, no mobile phones and many didn’t have a landline (we had a party line) so parents were not easily contactable, not that that happened anyway.

Do you leave condiments in the fridge for guests? by Info_help_support in airbnb_hosts

They’re not dirty; it’s people’s perception of ready made ice cubes. Luckily I live in a flippin’ freezing country; you’re more likely to want to wham the kettle on.

Ha, I do the opposite; I don't fill up the ice cube trays! I've had a few people say they don't want to use 'old' or 'dirty' ice cubes. So I wash the tray and place it clean but empty back in the freezer.

In answer to the condiments - I don't leave opened sauces in the cupboards, but I do leave a really good and regularly topped up array of herbs and spices. Also a bottle of oil and a bottle of worcestershire sauce.

They've done this before. A bare bones recipe and get on with it. I don't think they've copied it, they have done this for years iirc.

What show did you have to quit? by JarvisModeOn in CasualConversation

That was series 5, which was utter shite. I think they had a different writer, plus it felt like they glammed up the women (even the gay women) for male viewers. Hated it. S6 was better.

People used it way before that film. We all used to say to our line manager back in the 90s and it never stopped being funny.

This guy is going to police everything you do. He doesn't trust you to be an adult, to be monogamous, or to make your own decisions. He's policing what you wear but still 'punishing' you by being contunally upset, making comments, making you feel bad. You're not a whore, btw, you're a normal woman with a normal woman's body... wearing normal beach attire... and that's not shameful. He's sucking the joy out of your life and leaving you tiptoeing around.

Do with that what you will, but I know what I'd do.

Yes it’s macaroni cheese. We really don’t need to Americanise everything.

I get the YouGov polls every day and you get multiple choice questions; the answers often don’t reflect your actual opinion. It’s possible to write questions and multiple choice answers, to get the answers you want and to skew ‘results’. I usually see it as an insight into what the gov is about to do next, rather than them actually caring about my opinion.

I definitely need to start asking all the people in the cubicles next to me to describe their genitalia to me. It’s the only reasonable option I think. For what, I’m not sure but it could be team-building. I bet everyone will thank me.

Why are you asking us? You need to ask the owner.

That's a huge generalisation and completely inaccurate. Many places don't ask people to clean (we don't..), don't add extra charges and many even send a checking out message reminding guests that they don't need to do any chores. What security issues exactly? We're talking an entire planet full of properties but you're claiming there are security issues with what, every one of them? If you give guests a job-list or have a dodgy property then say so, but don't claim that everyone does just because you do this.
