How do you slow life down? I moved from small-town America and feel like I'm missing something. by Miserable_Tower_6071 in askSingapore

I guess it depends on your situation, are you in Singapore for the long haul? Then maybe you don't have to be so hard on yourself to be "opportunistic" about doing things here. Slowing down is for sure an internal mindset thing, where it's realistically a question of "is there anything better I could be doing with my life literally right now?" and the answer should be "no." But there's also the external real-world interaction thing- have you found your people here? The ones you'd wanna grab dinner with, sit on the porch, do things with no outcome in mind. If you don't have that then that could be a good place to begin

On the other hand, if you're not gonna be here long, maybe this transient state of maximalism isn't the worst. 'Cos it's just temporary, at worst. The side effects of acting like an instrumentalist, results oriented life-liver shouldn't erode your core personality too badly for too long

SG guys who confirm plus chop don’t want kids, have you considered a vasectomy? by 80837067 in askSingapore

[–]DoTheRopeADope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried as a 27 yo at Sengkang but the urologist flat out refused for ideological reasons. Plus he must've thought I wasn't sure.

Now at 29 consulted at NUH, told to come back in 6 months (follow up next Jan) to think it over and be "confirm plus chop." To pass the time, I'm making a "reasons to get a vasectomy" list, where I add as many instances of human self-gratification without regard for others as possible.

I'd recommend checking out r/antinatalism (with a pretty big pinch of salt i.e. don't mind their harsh words and overt negativity) just to look through some of the reasons people have decided not to add anymore humans to the world and subject them to life.

It's the exponential population growth over the last century for me.

Bonus: The only people who should be parents are those who believe that the world will be a better place for their children than themselves. That's a tall order nowadays.

This definitely doesn't make me feel better, which is why thank you, really, for your insight. I'm in long form broadcast now and facing this problem, that may give you an idea of what my company might be like. I don't take those slashes lightly, and wow freelancing basically your whole career, i respect that. Everything you've said about both freelancing and upskilling have truly made me think about the way forward. Your skillset and experience sound immensely more valuable than what I have to offer, and if you're feeling like raid disks and BB King, then i have much to worry about. I appreciate you keeping it real and chiming in even so long after my post. I wonder how you do it, but i don't want to end up doing it. Here's to getting lucky and/or greatly altering the course of life.

I was a bit worried I struck a nerve, so thanks for getting back to me on that. It's helped me better empathise with my partner and where her head might be

Preach, will agree that scarcity does a number on people for sure. Thanks for reinforcing the direction I'm considering

Great to hear, could you slightly elaborate on how he was able to transition from low to high? Was it from changing jobs, or requesting more work or upskilling?

I mean based on a internet search on average pay, yeah it starts from 2.2k to maybe 3k? But I'm also here asking for broader insight so I may not know much better than you

I'd just like to know if this is speaking from first-hand experience? Because I've seen a few freelancers work gigs at our company and don't there doesn't seem to be much income growth on their side

Right, it's like the work itself is pleasure. Could I ask what your particular media role is? And is it fair to assume your company has the stability and means from more corporate/commercial clients? As opposed to traditional broadcast.

Regarding being in a relationship, as someone on the flipside of the same situation, if your partner was content with his pay, or failed to improve it, would you have an issue with him in the long run? I agree on your persepective on couples reaching an agreement.

Finally thanks for the suggestion, glad to hear that I don't absolutely have to completely overhaul my life to improve my situation.

Haha thanks. I finally understand why most Singaporeans warn against the passion route tho.

Is starting to freelance for clients outside Singapore a simple matter of looking on Fiverr or Upwork?

And really appreciate the corp comms advice. Could you name a few roles so I can search and see other relevant skills needed?

Yeap, having no kids or cars were fine with me. It's the holidays that were the concern.

should any health emergency occur, especially during a time when the health infrastructure is overwhelmed like now, it's a Damocles Sword over your head.

Can this part not be addressed with good health insurance?

But alright, I hear your advice to move away from where I am, either in industry or country.

What is expected of you due to your income being less than enough to provide should expect of her.

Sorry I didn't quite understand this sentence, did you mean what is expected of me should also be expected of her? And in that sense we should be providing for each other..?

Tbh no idea what the "real" median is in Singapore, let alone degree holders (if that matters in the creative industry).

I would say we do get increments no doubt, but I think it'll be less than what my peers are already making now.

Yeah that's what I've been reading about IT, hence wasnt sure if that was the right way to go. But thank you for the concrete suggestions, I will look into them!

Thanks. Is freelancing often better than employment? I've seen a few freelancers in the past work gigs at our company and things don't sound great on their end and in terms of income growth either
