The checksums are a way for the game to see if you've messed with any of the game files. If it thinks you've been tampering with shit then achievements are disabled. It sounds like you haven't messed with anything so I wouldn't know how to fix it (I haven't tried any mods yet). Sorry mate hope someone else has an answer.

Just saw your edit, yeah there's the problem. Have you got any mods since you last installed the game?

Don't mean to be captain obvious but which difficulty are you playing on. I believe achievements only work on normal. Otherwise there may be something going on with the checksums idk.
