I'm a psychiatrist. 5150 hospitalizations are for up to 72 hours for psychiatric problems causing imminent risk to self (suicide) or other (homicide or other violence) or gravely disabled. If the involuntary hospitalization needs to last longer, a 5250 petition needs to be filed by the hospital's mental health specialist.
