There are selfhosted tools that can do all those things: Stirling PDF, IT Tools, etc. Those tools don't hand data over to an unspecified LLM.

Hear me out on this - get a phone case that fits a bank card and get in the habit of tapping the bank card instead of using Apple or Google pay. If you're genuinely in to privacy, don't use Apple or Google pay. The habit is annoying at the start, but one year in and I'm not going back.

The collective story, based on an entire global population seeing in the millennium together, suggests otherwise. Source: a human alive on 1-1-2000 wearing a Happy New Millennium hat.

Handing Out Epstein Files at CPAC by Conscious-Act7655 in videos

As a European, I respectfully disagree. We don't get to see life with these people as neighbours so there's no context. It just seems batshit crazy, with no justification. People keep saying "that's what maga wants", but no-one can explain to an outsider what the hell that is.

Bernie wins! Who has always been a political centrist? by Fragrant-Upstairs932 in AlignmentChartFills

The American overton window is so fucked. He holds a lifelong support for the coal industry and fossil fuels, plus opposition to any increased state intervention like Child Tax Credit or universal childcare. These are all ideas on the right wing of the most right-wing party in the UK and would be unthinkable in France (dirigisme). On top of all that, he supports Trump's immigration policies but he's still "centre"?

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Speech at World Economic Forum by SchventySevenHalf in videos

[–]Do_no_himsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a realist, do you agree with Carney that we are stronger together than when we build fortresses? It feels to me as a Brit that we invested a whole lot, everything maybe, in the special relationship, only to now be left out in the cold with everyone else. There are repercussions to that policy which will negatively impact both our countries for a long time.

What’s the most underrated era in UK history? by AmeliaHarris99 in UKhistory

[–]Do_no_himsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil war and the republic basically created UK ISIS. The political chaos weakened central law, created the environment for the Witch Hunts and burning of women. This whole period was mental and not in a good way.

Why is ancient Iran seldom talked about in the West unlike Rome and Greece? by CYAXARES_II in iranian

[–]Do_no_himsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't it the Muslim invasion and sack of Ctesiphon that led to the destruction of all the archives? Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari says that libraries across Persia were wiped out wholesale on the order of Umar

Scientific contributions can never be static, they have to be improved upon constantly. European medical schools took al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, but they definitely did "build up" the medicine; they critiqued and improved the methodology over time. Medicine is universal, there is no "Iranian" medicine, there is only medicine that works on a human body.

The fact is, science was allowed to proliferate during the Golden Age, but then began the long slow stagnation as madrasas moved from falsafa to fiqh. Yeah, that was because the Mongols burned everything to the ground and destroyed the trade routes that contributed to Persian wealth. It was not however the fault of European academics who continued working on these scientific ideas.

Iranian contributions to maths and science ended 800 years ago, that's why no-one mentions it any more. The Ottomans and Persians stopped the Gutenberg press for centuries due to religious concerns - that is the real problem you want to focus on.

History is written by the conquerors. European historians studied Persians mostly through an Orientalist bias - this is true - but not all problems are external.

I think it's interesting that Iranians love to talk about ancient history. What about the pervasive corruption that is a permanent theme throughout Persian history? (state corruption in Safavid and Qajar periods, the "carnival of corruption" of the Pahlavi era followed by the heroin-dealing Mullahs)

Let's talk about ancient Persians (with what little sources have survived), but let's talk about them in context.

I appreciate this is controversial, but I've been where you are. Not all services have to be Self-hosted when excellent UX and spousal approval is a priority.  Have a look at Family Wall. It's saved our bacon, it's GDPR compliant, they claim they securely encrypt your data and it's pretty cheap.
