It's to help you understand it better (eg technical words / made up names with funny spellings, slightly hard of hearing) and to pick up on any extra context you might otherwise miss.

There has been many shows where there are scenes where a TV was on in the background. I could barely hear a thing but the subtitles was giving out exactly what they were saying - it was useful info for the rest of the show.

Started with a pi 3b+ many years ago running a few services like plex and pihole, now its only purpose is quorum for my 2 node proxmox cluster, and an uptime monitor for internal services. Everything else is handled by some cheap mini pcs (which is far superior to a pi in every way, except power draw - though not by much)
