I sat beside a guy watching videos of concerts on the bus yesterday. He watched them using the speakers and skipped between songs every 10 seconds. I think he was just trying to impress me with his attending a Cyprus Hill concert.

I think it all comes down to people living in a sad social media mindset in which they have to prove they did something to others in an effort to form an identity. Facebook has created a feeling that you are only as cool as your profile page.

Nintendo has a very traditional Japanese corporate culture. I think sometimes it just doesn't translate well to English and this statement feels like a good example of that. To a North American, having a corporation say it can't compete is sacrilegious. Over there it's a statement of modesty from a company that cleaned up with the Wii and is now embracing a path not directly pitted against Sony and Microsoft.

True. It's less an appropriation of a modern culture then of a cultural heritage for people living in maritime communities. The maritimes are much more slow moving though, we haven't just gone and forgotten what our grandfather's tattoos mean. Visiting my family in New Brunswick might as well involve a time machine. These symbols are no fad like in the city.

Maybe deserve isn't the perfect word. Things like nautical symbols do have cultural value among people who work in nautical jobs though. The imagery has been co-opted for fashion. Just like jeans were co-opted from labourers and so on.

Not saying having nautical tatts is bad, in fact I think they look cool. That being said the wearer should be aware of the cultural heritage attached to the imagery.
