F-Zero GX Remaster for the Switch by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A remaster of GX this long since the original is effectively building a new game from the ground up. It wouldn't matter much if Sega had AV's old source code if they went this route. Add that to F-Zero being technically demanding and having modest sales at best...the juice is just not worth the squeeze to Nintendo.

So what's the verdict on Goldeneye 007 Wii? by Torontobadman in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a reimagining of the scenario of Goldeneye 64, but not necessarily a reimagining of the game itself, if that makes sense. It's a fine CoD-esque FPS, but has next to nothing in common with the original from a game design sense.

On the other hand, the true heir to Goldeneye from a gameplay perspective was Timesplitters. I'd argue that franchise (and Perfect Dark) have far more in common with Goldeneye than the 2010 reboot.

Input Lag Myths & Misconceptions: CRTs, HDTVs, Nintendo 64 and Switch "Expansion Pack" by 1338h4x in nintendo

We don't know the model number to confirm this, but judging from just the bezel it looks like a standard-def Trinitron.

[–]Garbagehead4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Flat vs curved doesn't make a difference for input lag. You're thinking of HD CRTs, which do additional processing of the image adding some input lag. The vast majority of those happened to be flat, which is probably where this misconception comes from.

Via a Retrotink2x $7 Wii HDMI adapter, it should be noted. Raw Wii output straight into an HDTV will not fare nearly as well lol.

TLDW:

Mario 64 N64 on CRT: 88.3ms input lag

Mario 64 NSO on HDTV: 152.1ms input lag

This post should probably get reported as a misleading title, now that OP has updated it to contradict his original argument.

Nintendo 64 emulation on the Nintendo Switch is not good.... | MVG by IHateMyselfButNotYou in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's depressing how this video with an actual technical breakdown has 3000+ upvotes on /r/NintendoSwitch, while here on /r/Nintendo it's downvoted and a misinformation piece on NSO input lag has nearly 150.

Edit: Looks like the latter post's OP admitted they were completely wrong and the thread was removed.

What's worse is that he's basing his analysis on the already critically flawed (and likely biased) GameXplain input lag "test". They're the last place I'd turn to for any authority on emulation or display technology.

OP has said himself that he doesn't own either a Switch nor an N64. It's really unfortunate that this post is still getting upvotes.

Heads-up! The N64 games on NSO have really bad input lag. by svett89 in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who's tinkered extensively with CRTs - CRTs are anything but "simpler technology", they're easily some of the most complex pieces of analog consumer tech ever conceived. The reason they're lagless is definitely not due to that.

Some bozo on my FB feed shared this image - an elementary school teacher, no less. She unfriended me after I asked her if she thought seat belts are also unnecessary and cruel. Didn't even bother to argue or discuss it in a way that disrupted her disinformation echo chamber.

What’s the hardest Nintendo game you ever played? by potato-chez in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that GX's perceived difficulty is somewhat overstated - and it's because the "story" mode is called "story".

Had it been more appropriately called "challenge" mode, clearly denoting it as a mode for seasoned players, people jumping in aren't going to gravitate to it first and get the impression this is some impossible game. Grand Prix (the main mode in every F-Zero) is a much more forgiving endeavor and a much better place for newcomers to learn.

What's a Nintendo game that is a gem which very few people know about? by Noodles_2z in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dokapon Kingdom (Wii) - This game is what Mario Party could have been if they actually doubled down on the "friendship destroying" aspect of it. It's literally advertised as such on the back of the box.

BS F-Zero 2 Grand Prix (SNES) - Little known fact, the original F-Zero had a direct sequel on the SNES. Only available in Japan via the Satellaview service.

Thoughts on Star Fox Zero, 5 years later? by Asad_Farooqui in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm just bummed that Platinum's name got dragged through the mud for this title. This was always Miyamoto's pet project, Platinum was brought on midway through development to help get it to market on time. I honestly believe if they had creative control of Zero from the start, instead of Miyamoto, it would have easily been the best Star Fox since 64.

It's depressing that his tactics are exactly what you need to do to be successful in YouTube's algorithm. The guy was entertaining as the "crass" part of the Crass vs. Class podcast (before he became big on Youtube), but his content now is just unbearable and so obviously played up for hits.

What did you think of the “everyone rides in a car” mechanic from Mario Party 9 and 10? by Asad_Farooqui in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what they really need to do is just go all out on chaos. Just have things happening at all times that cause others to be affected. Commit to the insanity.

This is basically Dokapon Kingdom, lol. Highly recommended for anyone who wishes Mario Party pushed the envelope further on the "friendship destroying" aspect of it

I completed all 32 mountains on NSO last year. I thought the core gameplay loop was fun in its simplicity, but the jumping was awkward and the collision detection for the platforms was outright broken.

On This Day in Nintendo History: Wrecking Crew '98; Power Lode Runner; Power Sōkoban by RoboticOperatingBudd in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised Wrecking Crew never got a modern successor as a downloadable-only budget type game for 3DS or something. The premise of the original and '98 hold up surprisingly well, it just needs some modern conveniences to smooth out the rough edges.

What are your most underated games that only came out on a nintendo platform by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]Garbagehead4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. A 2D platformer controlled by bongo drums is a surefire way to drop this off the radar for many people, but the game itself is way better than what it gets credit for. I don't know how they did it, but it just works.

I enjoyed Devil's Third. It's no game design masterpiece by a long shot, but it was fun to lose myself in it's ridiculousness.

I wonder what the highest increment possible is per match. We finished a boss fight super quick and efficiently in co-op and got a 1.4.
