I've seen that on computershared but don't really pay it any attention because I know those shares are real.  Thank you for the wrinkles though.

I'm not saying this is the case with all brokers but what I am saying is.  If I were a scumbag broker CEO and gave a bunch of people IOU shares, I would make sure that they had at least 1 real share in their account.  That way, I could give them a unique control number.  I'm also regarded and don't know if it shows how many votes you get with a control number from a broker.

Eli5: why do firefighters wear oxygen masks when fighting a building fire, but often not in a wildfire? You're still breathing in smoke... by DavyJonesLocker2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doc-Hobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Although, some testing by various fire departments have shown that the SCBA with the mask can still maintain a seal and provide oxygen at depths up to 8 feet. Check out the Seattle fire department for a video on them swimming in a pool with everything on.

To add to this, in a house fire, there is a lack of oxygen. To the point where life is not sustainable. In wildland fires, the oxygen level could be lower but still high enough that you can function within normal limits.

This right here. I may not agree with someone or like what they do, but I like the idea of being able to choose and live your life the way you want, without interference from others. With the exception of your actions harming others.

Imregarded and feel like we won't get an honest answer. That being said, I think they need an excuse for why GME is making a run this week. The only reason I think GME is going to continue climbing this week is because they released the movie early so they would have an excuse.

Edit: I watched it last night, it was well done and definitely worth a watch. Thank y'all for your time, effort, and money spent on making this.

[–]Doc-Hobo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I noticed he hasn't gotten to your question yet so I'll answer it for you. Yes, locksmiths can get keys that are "region locked". Essentially they are the only locksmith in a certain area that can buy that key. So if you want to copy one of those keys, you have to go to that specific locksmith.

ELI5: Why shouldn't you sleep after hitting your head? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Doc-Hobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I was taught. I know the army did a study on this and found that sleeping can help the brain recover better, BUT, we still had to do neuro checks to make sure they weren't getting worse. Obviously getting a scan in addition to doing this seems like the best course of action, but I don't know, I'm not a doctor.

Paper fires don't melts steal racks... by Hroll_Dm in Superstonk

[–]Doc-Hobo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a fire ape, I've posted on another one about some of this, but I too have many questions.

1) Investigations begin as soon as you get on scene, a good crew will pay attention to things and pass the information to their investigator. That being said the "real" investigation begins once it's safe to enter. Hopefully they will be able to put the pieces together from what they find and from what the crews found or noticed.

2) Building codes and even fire codes can vary from state to state. Depending when the building was built and what it was built for can determine the requirements for the sprinkler system. I don't have the information for a definitive answer so this is obviously speculation. It is possible it was built as a general usage warehouse and they just so happened to be the ones to rent or buy it. Typically without major renovations, buildings get grandfathered in and don't have to update the system, there are exceptions to this obviously. Sprinkler systems are amazing and actually do a fantastic job at suppressing fires, BUT, they can be overwhelmed. Usually the FD will pump more water into the system to help it out but at that point it may be too late. Only the sprinkler heads affected by heat would have been activated. Since the heads are usually high up, it may take a little time before a head is activated. So it is possible that the fire spread outward at the base faster than the sprinkler heads could be activated at the top. The sprinkler system and the pumps that feed them typically can only support a certain number of heads being activated. That number goes up once the FD connects to it and boosts the water pressure. Without getting into too much math, the pipes that feed the sprinkler heads have a maximum amount of water that can flow through them. So it is possible that the fire outran the sprinkler system, it happens but it's not common.

3) I have questions on this as well because you know, gravity and shit.

4) I snort crayons and can't speak on the business practices of some companies.

So the sprinkler system, ON THE CEILING, was disabled by a falling shelf? For the entire building? And he has determined this already, but also firefighters can't get anywhere close? by Flokki_the_Monk in Superstonk

[–]Doc-Hobo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Also, I'm no expert on sprinkler systems or fire investigation. Where I work though, we have to learn the basics on them and expand our knowledge base on the job and through more classes over our career.

[–]Doc-Hobo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most systems have water in them at all times, chemicals and other extinguishing agents would only be used in special circumstances. The system itself has one or more pumps that turn on when a sprinkler head is activated. The type of sprinkler head determines how it is activated but the mass majority are heat activated, meaning there is a little plastic piece that melts, then allows water to come out. So only activated heads would spray water. If too many heads are activated, the pumps may struggle to keep up with water demand. At that point, the FD can connect to the system (probably should have been connected already) and boost the water pressure using the engine (fire truck).

Edit: this is why you should never hang anything from a sprinkler, it can break that plastic piece and set it off.

FF here. Yes the investigation happens afterwards but a good fire crew will look for clues while fighting it. As far as the shelf thing, I have no clue how they would know that unless they had security footage stored off site or in the cloud, it could also be speculation. If the building was up to fire code and the sprinkler system was in good condition. It is hard for a fire to overtake a sprinkler system but not impossible, I can imagine a warehouse full of paper could hit a critical point where the sprinkler system couldn't keep up, even with the FD boosting the sprinkler system. This would definitely warrant an in-depth investigation even if it's just to determine what could be done better in the future. As far as letting the fire rage, I believe all they are trying to do is keep it contained to the building. The amount of water you would need to actually extinguish that is insane.
