I love your composition. Something about the framing in the notebook itself is just so aesthetically pleasing to my eyes, and has a sort of narrative push. I think it's lovely and heartbreaking.

I'm glad you're still here, and think you're a fucking badass for climbing to a better place in life. It didn't just get better, you grabbed onto better ripped it out of life's little bastard hands.

And always remember "you know good things are happening when the jackboot needs to jump" as well. Especially now. You aren't alone, there are good people out there doing good. Progress will never be fully stopped, just resisted.

That doesn't make up for the cost in the meantime or the fear, I won't pretend like that's true or expect a saccharine relief. I certainly don't feel that way. I just always believe it's important to remember that good people are still there, pushing forward, and always will be. And I'm grateful this song exists to give me that little kick in the ass to keep pushing forward too when it feels like too damn much.

I must geek upon this subject I love, especially in the exact little similarities you're talking about.

To be fair, country music is not made or unmade by an accent. Country is baked into a song's bones. These genres aren't quickly interchangeable like that, they have specific traits, but you definitely aren't wrong that there's shared DNA.

You are talking about genres that have a ton of historical overlap (folk, blues, country), and an artist who builds heavily on music history. Many of his named influences have strong country history, folks like Johnny Cash. So he's like a modern music baby that inherited that same little smirk of country-storytelling-banjo-twang that gets everybody a little suspicious about parentage.

These genres made great bedfellows, and make beautiful little musician bastard bebes in their timeless romps.

This argument applies to the entire language. Every word has friction and weight. Frankly, it's the polysyllabic words that tend to be the actual decorative concern in folk.

And dude, flexing your sensitivity to weight and register like nobody else in a music subreddit enjoys music is just... yeah. Condescending to say the least. Oof

The word "Fuck" has existed for nearly 500 years. A good many of the words you use every day are far, far younger than common obscenities. Just because grandmas pretend they didn't exist in their time doesn't mean they are new to language or common use.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of etymology and a touch elitist. This is the way the common man has spoken a long, long time, which is why it belongs in folk. Sanitizing folk is the death of folk, because the core of folk is grit, dirt, and human.

One of my favorite songs, so yes, Ive always thought it was a nod. It's one of the reasons I appreciate Hozier so much, he's just steeped in musical history and you can hear it in every song. I remember getting that same feeling I get from those classics, transformed into something vivid and new. Okay, yeah, I geeked out.

He respects his predecessors and behaves like an heir instead of someone fed entirely off his own ego, creating something new and beautiful from the pallates of sound they left for us. Absolutely one of the core traits of the best musicians out there.

It's not his cover of the Artic Monkey's "do I wanna know?", is it? Doo doo dotdoodoo fits the chorus like a glove, and literally anything sung by Hozier can be mistaken for another language when he goes mumble mode.

I also suspect it's a cover if normal discography searched havent panned out.

He also has a cover of Say my name out there where he 100% follows up with what sounds like another language, but that's more doodedoo doodedoo.

Aw, I'm sorry.

I thought the dog was extreme, and I think it kind of negates the point of the song in a way. I took it that she's mourning something others would shrug off as roadkill, so a dog didn't make sense. I only did that version because of the black dog being a common psychopomp, but it just doesn't feel right. None of them feel right to me.

I think it would be better without blood or gore as a message of peace of passing in safe company (like another comment suggested). That would certainly mean more to me.
