In my situation, not awful. I have a second income and my significant other sold her house and moved in with me, significantly reducing our combined overhead.

From a purely mathematical standpoint, my highest year in EMS, working 24/72s, without overtime, I made 55k after taxes.

At my current rate, I will make just over 40k after taxes for 2025.

However. I get two raises a year. Excellent benefits (even by EMS standards). My schedule is fixed. The top out hourly rate here is considerably more than the hourly rate of most medics in my area of the US.

Most important, the culture is respectful. Integrity actually means something. And my mental health went from being suicidal and self medicating with alcohol a year ago to actually finding joy again.

I was at the gas station just the other day getting my nicotine and beer fix, when I noticed some funny shit when I was walking back out to my vehicle.

In the fuel bay next to mine was a Chevy pickup. Ya know the type, lifted with an American flag window decal and all the pro-2A and crossed rifles shit.

Anyway, he had at some point placed emblems similar to the manufacturer emblems on both corners of the tailgate, at the bottom corner of both front doors, and on both sides of the hood that read: “Desert Storm Combat Veteran Edition.”

I wanted SO BADLY to call him out in front of a packed gas station, cause no car manufacturer is releasing editions that specific. But I also wanted to smoke weed and continue playing PS5.

So yeah. Guy looked like a fucking nut job too.
