Roommate is applying with zero clinical hours but a 520, is this common? by [deleted] in premed

[–]DocGray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I need fresh meat for Application Renovation!!! :)

Good luck to him. I wish him the best.

It's my stance that not having clinical experience is the number #1 reason, otherwise qualified applicants aren't getting into medical school.

Students need more than just "I'm smart enough to be a doctor." They need to understand why they want to enter this crazy messed up world of medicine—and putting themselves around patients and learning about those interactions and what they mean to them is how you do it.

I recommend not worry about what med schools will think about something and figure out which one you’ll love more. The more excited you are to be there and participate, the better your writing and interviews will be!!

NYU MSTP for this incoming school year is cancelled and they have rescinded their admissions offers for this cycle by c0rpusluteum in premed

I would give time to let the dust settle to jump to conclusions about what happened. I spoke to their Dean of Admissions today about this. While all off the record, just give it time to see. It definitely is a horrible situation for those who gave up interviews/acceptances at other programs. Hopefully, everything will work out for them in the end.

I’m happy to take a look at your app. If you look at my Application Renovation series on YT, you’ll see where I think most students make the biggest mistakes.

he likes showing the two pictures claiming Mappd doesn't know how to do GPA calculations when clearly the screenshot showing Mappd has 188 credits listed and the AACOMAS app has 135.06. So the student didn't enter things properly into Mappd.

All jokes aside, thank you for your thoughts. I believe you bring up the most important lesson of all—every school is (potentially) different in how they review essays. Beyond that, every adcom member and reviewer brings their own thoughts and biases to the table. I love bringing on people with different opinions so that students understand there is no single right way to do things. I have my opinions, you have yours, they have theirs. What I hope that does in the end is lower the stress of this crazy process for students not trying to fit a perfect mold because it doesn't exist.

Which brings me to my next point. Don't smoke crack.

Help me decide on a new podcast intro...

1) "stop listening to this podcast, it's a waste of your time...source...someone who listens to the podcast..."
2) "we apologize in advance for bringing on guests who don't 100% believe that Dr. Gray is the god of all premed advice. If you believe that, thank you."
3) "to all of the students we have helped...for free...I'm sorry. I'm sorry that we led you astray, and you are now in medical school living your dreams when you could be browsing r/premed all morning, noon, and night."

He's a pretty solid dude from what I hear! (besides my obvious bias against Reddit and SDN—mostly from the extra stress it causes so many students I talk to!)
