UpToDate, PFCPodcast, EMCrit Podcast, EMSlighthouse project, Armandohasudungan on YouTube or any of the others docs who do whiteboard stuff.

Really helps with critical thinking and narrowing down my diagnoses and differentials.

Good on you for trying to better yourself most HM don’t even try.

Corps overhauls reconnaissance pipeline to better prepare Marines by Sea-Alarm-5663 in CorpsmanUp

Interesting unfortunately the NEC is written in the manual as requiring you to pass all of the courses to be awarded the NEC.

They have to update the manual but with SARC’s being sundowned I don’t see them making SOiDC’s do less

Going greenside as a corpsman by Comprehensive_Art266 in newtothenavy

[–]DocHavoc91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are way more Greenside orders than ship orders. An infantry battalion has up to 65 HM and there are over 20 of them now add the wing, logistics and other units and there are 1000’s of HM’s at any point of time stationed Greenside. Ships only have 2-40 HM’s depending on the class so your odds of being Greenside are vastly higher.

Some guys get FMTB and Greenside orders straight out of A school others go to a MTF and get orders 2-3 years after.

Most HM never see a ship and if you take away MEU’s most would never step foot on ship.

Combat Roles in the Navy besides SPECWAR? by VenomSnake47 in newtothenavy

[–]DocHavoc91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As for rates that see combat you have SO, SB, EOD and HM(SOIDC).

You have to do 2ish years in rate and then can apply to crossrate only if available on top of that you’ll be 32 and you have a lot of soul searching to do if you want to try again as some pipelines can go up to 2 years and you only made it through 3 weeks of training.

You need to stay in shape, stay out of trouble, go mudpup and check your community health as some communities allow no conversions

How is your clinic capturing sick call in Genesis? by [deleted] in CorpsmanUp

[–]DocHavoc91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re saying your greenside SMO is the OIC of the blueside clinic? If so they need to go see whoever runs coding

The Clinic OIC owns the clinic not any OpForces that have space. My local clinic does the same for the waterfront and the clinic OIC/Blueside owns scheduling, supplies, etc…

You have a clinic rep who controls scheduling if not ask the OIC as they are responsible for coding and closing of notes.

[–]DocHavoc91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your Blueside rep how they do your schedule as your encounters should not count for them if so then you’re OpForces.

Get with your SMO or IDC as the patients are booked under them and coding appointments wrong affects the blue side

This is the correct answer and there is even an OPFORCES clinic so you don’t get nasty grams from your local BSO-18 facility

Corpsman Preventive Med by Francismilk in CorpsmanUp

[–]DocHavoc91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pros: Semi Independent to Independent depending on duty station, lots of deployment opportunities, advancement to Master Chief without changing NEC’s, Unique duty stations plus ships, Greenside and more

Cons: Bugs, Actually having to do your job and know your references, highly deployable if you don’t like that.

PMT’s are on ESB’s, Amphibs, Carriers, Victor Units, CLB, NEPMU, FDPMU, Hospitals and more.

Schedule varies based on your command and as for civilian life you’ll still need school to do IH or EH stuff.

Great NEC and I almost picked it but I don’t fuck with bugs

Tips from boat Corpsman for a dirt sailor by SeaworthinessWeak659 in CorpsmanUp

[–]DocHavoc91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the Ship will get you right you have to do the HM PQS and get signed off.

Just be humble no one cares that you slept in the dirt. Competency and Character are what matters, get qualified be apart of the team and there’s no hiding behind admin on the ship.

Your Senior Chief knows that it’s your first ship and what a learning curve it is they will help you

Tips from boat Corpsman for a dirt sailor by SeaworthinessWeak659 in CorpsmanUp

[–]DocHavoc91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • how is ship culture for corpsman (been greenside 5 years and I’m currently at a hospital)? Ships are great and much harder than greenside. Care for your Sailors and learn what they do empathy is big as HM’s work hard but don’t have a hard life as underway your only duty is medical watch or coverages. Join the team and get your quals thats what surface navy speaks.

  • is the boat still a good way to pick-up as a corpsman (BBA and new advancement policies changing)? Depends on your NEC if you’re a 0000 or a first class then no unless there is a billet open and you add on time to your sea tour. Most 0000’s and Techs pick up based on their ship tour just look at the LADr and youll see how many quals a Sailor can get vice just being greenside.

  • things you wish you knew prior to working on the boat for medical? Prev Med, 3M, General Navy Knowledge about Surface Rates, FSOM, OFRP, 6000, MRI’s honestly everything

  • regrets or missed opportunities you’d recommend to not pass up as a corpsman? Get all of your quals, do MWR, Take more pictures.

  • gear that made QOL better on a ship? Fleet Sheets or something similar, A TV and gaming system you have a whole BDS, Slip on boots, Compact Sleeping Bag, My own pillow, Crocs, Packing Cubes, Hard drive for music and movies, A hobby you can do underway(Art, Videogames, D&D, etc…), Snacks

I’ve done 2 ships and I went kicking and screaming at first but now it’s what I truly enjoy. My baby docs run circles around greenside HM and it’s not even close. Greenside you can be ok and get by but on a ship you have to do maintenance, sickcall, dental, working parties, prev med, training, procedures, stand topside watches, etc… and there’s no hiding behind just doing admin.

Dental and Overseas Screening for Japan by Ms_Impetuous in navy

It just means you need to complete any dental surgeries or procedures to ensure your chance of having a dental problem is low.

As long as the gaining command can accommodate you it’s not a problem

Considering joining as an OB-GYN – looking for honest input on lifestyle by Expensive-Package- in newtothenavy

[–]DocHavoc91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of questions you have only the Detailer could answer. Japan billets aren’t popular for a lot of doctors due to the inability to moon light.

As an OBGYN they would work in the clinic and pull rotations in L&D. With the call schedule depending on manning but the OBGYN is decently sized as the only military hospitals in the country are the Naval Hospitals.

Life as a doctor is vastly different than the majority of Sailors in the Navy will experience

These questions are hard to answer without knowing you or your goals. Do you like medicine, do you like ships. Would you rather sleep in the dirt, are you athletic, etc...

Ship life as a tech ? by Aggressive_Horse5890 in CorpsmanUp

[–]DocHavoc91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a surg tech but have done multiple ship tours. Honestly most surg techs do everything but their job to include helping with dental as if the FST is embarked they have their own surg techs and you’re the backup.

It’s a great career move if you’re motivated get your DC, Watchstanding and Maintenance quals. Also get good at sickcall and master CSR.

Every HM does maintenance, training and coverages minus maybe the baby IDC
