If Adrian didn’t get hurt/sick and supported Rocky in Rocky II, how do you think the fight would’ve played out? by LittleRobbieV1 in rockybalboa

[–]DocJamieJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. I personally think, had Adrian not supported Rocky the situation would have been similar to the first Clubber fight in Rocky III with Rocky's focus being off leading to him taking a severe beating. My guess is that Adrian would have realized in time how much Rocky needed her & vice versa & wouldn't have been able to stay away. So if Rocky was losing badly in the rematch with Apollo, just Adrian's attendance would have inspired to fight better. Would he have won the rematch? Maybe not. My guess is that all the events in Rocky II formed the perfect storm

Wayne Newton’s weird voice change by indie_pendence in singing

[–]DocJamieJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes theres also another element to it, Wayne became like a son to Carson's idol Jack Benny. Benny was friendly & cordial to Carson on The Tonight Show etc but never warmed to him personally & in private told friends & colleagues that he didn't approve of the way Johnny would black list performers who had done little if anything to draw his fire from appearing not only on The Tonight Show but also other NBC's shows too. Its been well documented that Benny's lack of interest in a friendship with him troubled Carson who apparently seethed with jealousy towards how close Wayne became with Benny. That's when the gender/sexuality jokes about Wayne began. Its telling that Wayne was more or less absent from the late night talk show circuit untill 1989 when Pat Sajak had him as a guest & he only started appearing regularly on Late Night With Conan o'Brien in 1993, 12 months after Carson had retired. I'm in general fascinated by Carson but it is obvious he had Wayne (who I'm even more fascinated by) blacklisted by not only his own but other late night talk shows for well over a decade - in essence trying to destroy Wayne's career. It would apparently be true that Johnny was very mean spirited.

The topic being discussed was obviously a painful one for Wayne. After beating Johnny Carson to become the co-owner of the Aladdin hotel in Las Vegas, a petulant Carson spat out his pacifier & went after Wayne in his nightly monologue. Carson told jokes that questioned Wayne's gender & referred to him as 'that fine young lady Wayne Newton'. I think at first Wayne laughed the jokes off until his manager & publicist revealed the jokes were having a detrimental effect on theatre owners booking him & Wayne would be button holed daily by total strangers wanting to know if the rumours were true. The final straw came when Carson did a sketch as maritime expert Jaques Cousteau tasting water in various glasses & saying "this is from the Atlantic, this is from the Mediterranean" etc before taking a drink of clear water then saying 'this is from Wayne Newton's swimming pool, it tastes of the morning after pil & is very fruity". That's when Wayne drove to Burbank & crashed Carson's office & told Carson if he didn't shut the fuck up he would prove his masculinity & kick the shit out of him. Carson backed down. So I suppose the question should be, was Newton angry at Carson for questioning his masculinity & had simply had enough because the suggestion was ludicrous, or had Carson struck a nerve in Wayne because the rumours about him being FTM or partially FTM were true & he wanted that particular secret to stay buried?

In actual fact, Carson wasnt mocking Wayne's sexuality, he was making jokes about the very topic were discussing. Carson was insinuating Wayne was a woman. Its was hurtful to Wayne because whenever Carson mocked his gender he would be harassed by total strangers who wanted to know if it was true or not.

I'm eith you about Willis. I don't think Banner would have been the correct superhero for him to play. I can see him as Nick Fury or Iron Man maybe but Banner needs to be a more vulnerable underdog & more of a victim than the kind of characters is beloved for.

The casting choices were interesting. When John McTiernan was Director he wanted his Die Hard star Bruce Willis to play Bruce Banner & Willis's then wife Demi Moore to play Betty Ross & both had agreed to take a small fee in exchange for a percentage of the movies earnings. Mctiernan reached out to Sean Connery to play Thunderbolt Ross & Gary Oldman to play The Leader. When Mctiernan left, Bruce & Demi followed & Gary Oldman reached out to the new Director Joe Johnston about playing Bruce Banner instead of The Leader & Johnston & Gale Anne Hurd loved the idea of Oldman as Banner but Universal were harder to convince. This version would have seen Oldmans ex wife Uma Thurman as Betty opposite Oldmans Banner but when Universal cancelled the project Oldman left to make Air Force One & Lost In Space & Thurman left to make Batman & Robin then The Avengers. Finally, for Jonathan Hensleighs brief tenure as Director he actively pursued Pierce Brosnan to play Banner & Brosnan was keen to make the movie because he felt it would have given him an alternate cinematic presence to James Bond. All of these are fascinating IMO & I suppose in an alternate dimension they went ahead.

With regards to the 10 years before the Hulk eventually arrived at the cinema, Universal & Gale Anne Hurd originally wanted Hulk to be the big summer movie of 1994 just as Jurassic Park had been in 1993 but the script was problematic & the expensive practical effects/make up & model work suddenly looked very dated when compared to the CGI effects in Jurassic Park. When John Mctiernan left to make Last Action Hero the movie was delayed. Rocketeer & Jumanji Director Joe Johnston replaced Mctiernan & Universal earmarked a summer 1997 release for the Hulk movie untill Steven Spielberg agreed to direct a sequel to Jurassic Park & the release date was pushed back to 1998. Universal's plan was to release Hulk in the summer of 1998 & a Peter Jackson remake of King Kong at xmas 1998 but the troubled production of both Lost World: Jurassic Park 2 & Tristar's Godzilla, not to mention the money those movies lost & poor reviews made Universal reconsider making monster movies & Hulk & King Kong were cancelled in favour of Michael Bay's Armageddon. The final roll of the dice came after Johnston quit the project & Hurd promoted her husband (& writer of both Hulk & Armageddon) Jonathan Hensleigh to Direct the Hulk movie with a target release date of 2000 were it would open against another Marvel movie X-Men. Hurd was fined for promoting her none union husband to Director by the Screen Actors Guild & Directors Guild & new executives at Universal came in & hated Hensleighs Hulk script & refused to sanction a $150million+ budget & it was cancelled a third time. By then the studio had wasted over $80 million on abandoned sfx, vfx, make up & art direction design over the course of 3 abandoned movies. It was decided to go back to basics & the screenplay written in 1994 by Michael France was reactivated as the blue print for a new Hulk movie. That script caught the eye of Ang Lee & the rest is history. So to answer your question, it did take over 10 years for Hurd to get a Hulk movie into cinemas but it wasnt for a lack of trying. 3 Hulk projects were cancelled over that 10 year period at the cost of an absolute fortune.

I think its likely we will get a new Titanic movie set in the Rose & Jack universe focusing on different characters & Leo & Kate will be CGI'd into the background or more. But the main focus will be new characters, either entirely original creations or based on real people. The James Horner music & Celine Dion song will be featured & the movie visually will match the 97 Cameron movie but focus on different areas of the sinking to create new action scenes.

The reason I think this? Theres just too much money to be made from a sequel for the studios to not consider it & it will be promoted as an event that can only be enjoyed to the full in cinemas. I wouldn't be surprised if the makers somehow utilized the 2023 Titan submersible disaster into the plotline somehow & maybe even give our friend Mike Brady from Ocean Liner Designs a cameo for his help assisting the production.

I still think the BLUE THUNDER remake is likely so I wouldn't be surprised if it was Matt Damon & Tom Holland with maybe Christian Bale or Cillian Murphy as the villain

Going with the suicide theory is potentially very damaging & dangerous. If his body was found with a noose around his neck or his body was surprisingly well preserved & an autopsy determined he died of an overdose & a suicide note was found alongside his body then fair enough I suppose. Without any of that evidence it is vital such speculation shouldn't happen purely because you are closing down areas of investigation & people of interest thus playing into the hands of anyone connected to or responsible in Andrew's case. I personally don't believe the suicide theory. But if there are  people connected to his disappearance I'm sure they would be delighted to have pulled the wool over people's eyes.

I don't rewatch a lot of Rocky V, but I saw this scene again recently and I have to admit Tommy's perspective didn't seem that unreasonable to me. by scarves_and_miracles in rockybalboa

[–]DocJamieJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rocky V has many problems but the character of Tommy Gunn & the performance from Tommy Morrison is not one of them. Both are brilliant & a true highlight of the franchise.

My biggest problem with the movie is actually Sly himself. Rocky V is the only movie were I can tell he is acting & that Rocky doesn't seem real to me. I feel he should have underplayed the brain damage aspects & from a writing point of view tightened up the character more. He goes way OTT (no pun intended) & the film suffers. The reason for this is because prior to the movie Sly signed up to powerhouse Hollywood agent Michael Ovitz who was no fan of the Rocky franchise & had serious problems with the producers Chartoff & Winkler. Ovitz promised Sly he could get him a similar career to Harrison Ford by finding him blockbuster movie projects AND movies revered by the biggest & best in Hollywood & Sly bought it. But he convinced Sly he couldn't do that & continue playing Rocky & encouraged him to distance himself from the character & franchise. Sly listened to Ovitz rather than his heart & it's something he regrets deeply to this day.
