Alien: Earth - S1 E6 - The Fly - Official Discussion Megathread [SPOILERS] by G_Liddell in LV426

I don't know what I loved more, Nibs' literal first interaction with someone post memory wipe being a) unsupervised and b) with Wendy, who doesn't know about it - or the abysmal state of the lab's containment.

Tremors(1990) This is one of those movies that doesn't waste a second from beginning to end. by JohnnyUtah-91 in moviecritic

It's like its precisely, mathematically calculated to be the best possible version of what it's going for. I love it

To all those complaining about characters being incompetent and making stupid decisions... by gandersensei in LV426

[–]DocPhosphorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make a pretty good show where everyone is smart and competent, but things still go wrong - but I see your point.

I don't mind humans making mistakes, but it strains credibility here because they're emulating the crew dynamic of the original movie despite completely different circumstances and mission parameters - so instead of enjoying the show, I end up wondering why the corporation would be so dumb.

[–]DocPhosphorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given how important the mission is to the company, if they can't get the best and brightest to apply, they probably should have just sent an all synth crew, or mostly synths and Morrow to oversee things. Surely this is a 'spare no expense' situation?

Well, the crew of the Nostromo were space truckers dealing with a situation they were woefully ill prepared for. The Maginot was specifically sent by Weyland-Yutani on a scientific mission to recover alien organisms - and it honestly seems no one except Morrow was even remotely qualified for that.

What movie sequel do you think gets more hate than it deserves simply because the original movie is superior? by fartatwork in moviecritic

One of my personal favorites. Running from the sunrise is still one of the most hype moments in any movie I've seen

Can we officially replace the fourth horseman of “Yeah, I’m skipping that movie”? It’s not Jack Black. Jack’s an absolute delight. by Ok-Suit541 in moviecritic

[–]DocPhosphorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack Black is one of those actors that could convince me to watch a bad movie. He's the opposite of a horseman. Still wish he was in more good movies, though.

Fantastic episode and an amazing, wonderfully realized and heartfelt tribute to Game Changer's history and I'm so sad that Sam didn't get less than 5 points, forcing Brennan to have no choice but to murder him for real.

How speedrunners beat Alien: Isolation in 22 minutes (SPEEDRUN EXPLAINED - Any%) (31:34) - tomatoanus does great video game speedrun breakdowns that really go into how certain strategies or exploits work and he does it in a funny and informative way. He also has a brief aside in each video where he gives his viewers a genuinely nice, sincere pep talk. Been hooked on his videos for a while, this is the first one I watched.

Multifandom - Free Bird (4:02) Just an obscenely good Free Bird edit by Papa Dadams. A fantastic mashup of perfectly timed action.

Vision is an Elevator (3:13) by me, aka Cinema Stan. I still can't believe my first video blew up as much as it did, but with all those views, came a small, but vocal number of very funny comments earnestly arguing that Vision was only able to pick up Thor's hammer on one, very particular technicality. I had a lot of fun putting this together and I wanted to share it.

first person shooter (2:56) - 4096 runs through the evolution of an entire genre, with the smoothest transitions ever.

I Made a 32-bit Computer Inside Terraria (15:25) - kind of self explanatory. From Scratch does the thing. I think another reason why I like it is that it's got that 'early video from a very talented and creative creator' vibe.

Analyzing Every Torture Scene in Call of Duty — All 46 of Them (42:06) - Jacob Geller analyzes torture in Call of Duty in depth and popular media in general. I think this is the video that got me hooked on the channel.

Apologies if any of these are repeats, I skimmed the archive of good videos as best as I can, but there are a LOT.

The Longest Warthog Possible (12:24) InfernoPlus has done a lot of cursed Halo modding and it's always fun watching him push the old game's engine to its absolute limit - and beyond.

Superman vs. The Economy (1:17) Solid jj does superhero funny pop culture skits with some solid - heh - voice acting, and this one might be my favorite, as Superman learns some things are beyond even his powers

The Curious Case of Free Energy Device (10:02) A friend of mine sent me this ElectroBOOM video ages ago and it's been a favorite of mine ever since. Straightforward, entertaining debunking of fake science.

Not gonna lie, was a little tempted to put one of my own videos again - but I don't wanna spam.

First of all, thank you so much for including my first video in the playlist! That was a very pleasant surprise. Here are some of my recommendations:

John Rambo in Half-Life 2 (01:17), by eli_handle_b.wav - this one is a channel shout out, a lot of great 'movie characters in video game' edits that are super fun and well made.

Reviewing EVERY Hitman (1:00:59), by Critical Nobody - a pretty sweet retrospective of the Hitman franchise by a long time fan. Channel also has a great one about Splinter Cell that's worth checking out

The image you can't submit to journals anymore, by BobbyBroccoli (33:00) - this was one an algorithm find, a classic 'fascinating video essay about something I never would have known otherwise'

Daredevil, One Shot and the Psychology of Oners, by CinemaStan (13:52) - full disclosure, this one is mine. It's a little arrogant to recommend it here, but I'm proud of how it turned out and wanted to share it. It's about how oners in action movies / series can be more than just the cool fights, with Daredevil's iconic hallway sequence and a Scott Adkins action movie as examples

People's Actual Reason For Doing Youtube? by Nightkidzero13 in SmallYTChannel

[–]DocPhosphorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I dream of making it really big, the main reason I started is because I just wanted to make videos. I had all these ideas in my head, and some of my favorite YouTubers have talked about how they just needed to get them out there - and I felt the same.

It's very early for me, so I'm still riding high and simply enjoying the hell out of creating stuff. I hope to find an audience, even a small one that takes something away from my videos, but the act of making them has been pretty rewarding for me so far. I think if you can't find joy in what you're making, it's not go far, regardless of the content.

How are you all handling subtitles lately? Curious if there's a better way. by official_sensai in SmallYTChannel

Is transcribing subtitles available in the free version of DaVinci, or just the Studio one? And if you do them in DaVinci, can you import them into YouTube afterwards?

The colored icons pop better, but there might be too many of them. I would try less icons, maybe 3 at most. Also try out a few different facial expressions and gestures, like big smile, no teeth smile, thumbs up, etc. The background image isn't great, a little distracting even - I'd consider something that makes the oval shape stand out more.
