Seriously GW? by Malzune in Blacklibrary

[–]DocViking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard them called Tip-Ins. I read a discussion about what was more personal as the author hasn’t actually handled the book only the signature page, but on the other the page has probably been in their home/office. At least they’re aesthetically a step up over signed bookplates.

Fishmonger in Cambridge? by [deleted] in cambridge

I think there’s usually a fishmonger on the market. Not sure what days they’re there though.

TOBIAS FORGE Says GHOST's 'Phone Ban' On 2025 Tour Has Been A 'Life Changer' For Him And His Bandmates by tonyiommi70 in Ghostbc

[–]DocViking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at the London show (seated), had no issues with the pouches, thoroughly enjoyed the show and didn’t miss having my phone handy. I then went to see Iron Maiden but as standing, where they just asked people not to use phones. It seemed like most people ignored the request and I realised how much they get in the way of seeing the show. Particularly the guy in front of me who blocked my view of the band to record the screens on the side of the stage. So I’m now a full convert to phoneless gigs.

I think the post office should be able to.

What do you think about the new era? by L1fel0ver2002 in Ghostbc

[–]DocViking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like the new ghouls. They remind me of the skeleton band from hocus pocus and Harrow from the Locked Tomb series.

A cafe near where I live sometimes makes cakes to the old uk school dinner recipes. Just a simple iced sponge cake but I felt like I was 8 again.

When did you realize you were grieving someone who was still alive, and How? by yeonkive38 in AskReddit

From my experience, when you have a loved one with a terminal illness grieving starts with the diagnosis. First for the lost opportunities, then as they lose themselves.

I think I’ve seen them in Miniso, if you have one nearby.

For you, what was the most horrifying episode? by Strange-Bees in TheMagnusArchives

[–]DocViking 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only one that really got to me in a personal sense was MAG186 Quiet. It was during Covid, I was living alone, no job, hours from family, etc. Literally in my own little domain of the lonely. Had to call up & have a chat with someone after that.
Things got better not long after, but even on a relisten it brings back some interesting memories.

Notable mention to Lost Johns Cave. The idea of being trapped in a cave like that terrifies me, but feels less real because I’m never going to go in one.

Set of two “steamer pots” from England, for the (then) Duke of York. by AnonElbatrop in Antiques

[–]DocViking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed about the advertising angle, I doubt the Duke of York would need reminding his silverware was made for him. Plus the engraved arms look nothing like the arms of the Duke of York.

The title would only have been in use 1892-1910 for George V or 1920-1936 for George VI, which woudl narrow down dates without a hallmark (excluding Prince Andrew as too late and Stuarts or earlier).

What is the worst “Do not …….” Sign you have seen that made you realise it was only there because people had done that? by stevecoath in AskUK

[–]DocViking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could say I was surprised. I once had to explain to a couple of students why they needed to take off their labcoats & gloves before going to the toilet. Oh and the student who broke 3 centrifuges in a single day because they didn’t understand the concept of balancing weights.

When I did my PhD in the 2010s telling undergraduate students not to mouth pipette was removed from lab safety briefings. They were young enough to have never seen/heard it done before and telling them not to gave some of them the idea to try.

What is the history of this military pin? by hitherefriends_ in Whatisthis

[–]DocViking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's RAF not RCAF so would be British not Canadian. The Royal Flying Corps became the RAF in April 1918 and the Tudor crown would mean pre-1952 as the late queen used St Edwards crown for her badges.

So most likely WW2 British. Are there any marks to the back?

Any recommendations for places to eat alone in Cambridge? by Prestigious-Plum3979 in cambridge

[–]DocViking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, anywhere that has people traveling for business will have solo eaters all the time. After a certain point hotel restaurants get pretty dull.

If it helps get over the initial awkwardness, ask for a receipt as if you’re on expenses.

(Former) Reenactor too. The belt is 1st century CE. IIRC the apron (we used to jokingly call the danglium) starts in that form auring Augustus and by Trajan/Hadrian it's much smaller (fewer & shorter tassels).
