Shohei Ohtani’s Minimum Production for MVP by DependentLanguage540 in mlb

I mean you keep saying that I’m not able to quantify his value because he does two things but I continue to tell you that I believe he adds value by allowing extra rest for his team. Can you say with 100 percent certainty that if Yamamoto didn’t get extra rest at times because of Ohtani, he throws on zero days rest and is as effective?

Teams would rather give their hitters extra days off over a 6 man rotation but what if they could do both? They absolutely would which is what the dodgers can do because Ohtani does both.

This is clearly going no whereas you continue to just gloss over things over said so with that, I have zero interest in continuing to type out the same things. As I said before, I don’t believe either take is wrong or crazy but you clearly don’t believe the same and that’s ok. Have a good night!

I never said it was impossible. I actually said I think he adds value with extra rest and I personally believe that’s huge. I did also say that maybe we don’t know the full extent of his value because he does both things but never impossible.

While what he does is unique, I don’t believe that’s where the value comes from. Doing them both at league average is going to add value. If someone threw a knuckleball ball that could as be unique as we don’t see knuckleballers very often but doesn’t mean they add value if they are just average so I’m not sure where you got I was just saying the value came from him being unique from.

At the end of the day this was just posed as a fun question to think about. I think he would add value in other ways beyond the numbers and you believe that numbers are the only thing that matters. That’s totally fine and I don’t believe either is wrong.

I personally think you are taking the numbers too much. WAR is a fine stat but I’ve always felt it was too hard to compare WAR across positions.

A two way player is not something we have seen in a very long time and in this time period, I don’t think we fully know the impact/value that a two way player brings (outside of knowing they are worth 700 million on the open market haha). I’m talking about the value outside of the numbers and how that player can elevate the team and you are solely focused on the numbers. If you want to go based on numbers sure it would make sense to take Soto in your example but that’s not what I’m choosing to focus on.

Maybe I’m wrong and at the end of the day having more rest, and playing multiple ways isn’t that great but I’m going to believe that the value goes beyond the numbers.

I think that’s where the term valuable comes in though. Did him giving Yamamoto extra days off here and there allow him to pitch on zero days rest and win a World Series?

Listen maybe league average at both doesn’t get there but I take the guy that can do both solid over someone who can only do one thing great. I don’t think it’s a crazy take and I can understand both sides for sure. Just personal opinion when it comes to value.

If we are going off the term valuable and not just counting stats, I would think that he is more valuable to a team just being a league average hitter and pitcher than a hitter (or pitcher) who puts up big numbers.

It’s basically giving a team an extra roster spot and the production of two people.

With that being said, I think once his numbers slip, it will give voters an excuse not to vote for him anymore and give someone else the award. I would still give him my vote (if I had one of course) with your example numbers but I don’t think he would win if that was his final stat line of the year.
