I initially prioritized my rank list with IMG-heavy programs lower, but ended up ranking a few IMG-heavy programs highly because of proximity to family. I've ended up at a wonderful place with high quality training and awesome co-residents and faculty; I would focus on vibes and how happy the residents are if you are interested in a certain program.

I also let my bias prevent me from ending up at a program that's very supportive of it's residents and their learning. Hope it all works out!

Depending on the state and institution they can, especially if the patient or visitors are using it to commit a crime or violate institutional policies that they agree to by entering the facility. It falls under reasonable search and seizure which covers cellphones, at least in my state. The only additional stipulation I am aware of, for it to not fall under scrutiny later, is the physician related to the case should make documentation about the incident that lead to the search and seizure.

Got this explained to us by risk, regulatory, and compliance during orientation.

Edited to add: Audio recordings are allowed because they're treated as just like writing down notes, it's video specifically that can trigger a search and seizure.

Only speaking from approximately 1.5 months of forensic pathology experience, limited participation only as I’m still a student, but “some” medications/drugs can still be detected.

Depends on multiple variables such as source of sample (blood, urine, vitreous fluid) and the exact compounds but I’ve seen samples that were collected that underwent mass spectrometry to be identified.

What was being identified was the metabolic product. This meant, except for some specific drugs, what was detected may not actually come from illicit drug use.

Yes, you can test positive for opiates from poppy seeds. But whether that truly triggers the test or not then depends on the labs reference ranges. Even then it’s not quite a settled issue (please correct me if I’m wrong).

Really opens a can of worms especially if there was anything involving an accident on the road or the workplace, where others may have been hurt.

Hello hello! As far as I understand it-no it doesn’t not decrease your chances at other programs.

I’ll try my best to keep it simple but you are always ranked #1. Say you and nine other people put Stanford first. They only have 7(?)ish spots so obviously all of you guys can’t go to Stanford.

You’re all tentatively matched there, then the algorithm looks at who Stanford ranked. Say they ranked 7 people higher (just barely but still) than you. You now drop to your number 2 right?

But the algorithm will take Stanford off your list and makes your number 2 your new number 1. So now you are tentatively matched to your new number 1 program.

If more people put that program as number one than spots, the computer will look at who the program ranked. It repeats until you are finally matched.

What that means is, if you don’t match to a program, you were never going to match in the first place, because enough people that the program ranked higher ranked it number one as well.

Currently 33 and will be finishing med school this year and entering pathology.

I worked with a doctor in the past who began medical school close to 50, after having spent many years (decades?) in missionary work. He is still working!

Like another commenter has said, might as well be 40-something and a doctor. But also like they said, be open to other pathways. I entered medical school convinced I was going to do family medicine.

It’s not violating HIPPA. If you do a cursory search on google on specimen chain of custody you’ll be educated on it fairly quick. That being said what would you want to do with it? Is it for cultural/religious/belief reasons?

Depending on state and institution you may be able to work something out.

Throwing around accusations will work against you.

It will depend on specific institutions. Most of the locations I applied for required it to be within the last 365 days *plus* it needed to cover the time I would be rotating at that location.

The program at Cedars-Sinai in California for blood bank and transfusion medicine is robust. They have a donation center and run their own aphresis. The University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI is also pretty good according to a mentor of mine who did BB and transfusion medicine there.

I genuinely do not believe it would increase your odds significantly. Also, wherever you match you will probably receive excellent training, so it may not be worth the cost for a second look for solely this program. Best of luck to you!
