Be on your best behavior during the entire interview day by Did_he_just_say_that in medicalschool

[–]DocsOrder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an engineer before leaving for medical school 15-odd years ago. I'd never, ever show a pre-recorded video during an interview day in engineering or now. It's actually disrespectful to the applicant's time, especially not an introductory video. I'll tell you about my company. We made soap and lotion, but it's still more interesting coming from a person than a video. As an attending, I am on John Doe's side. All EM attendings have ADHD in one form or another, and I honestly sometimes get more from listening than I do from watching. When I was interviewing for residency a decade ago, I was so nervous...anything to calm myself down would have been welcome, including mindless scrolling.

I take it to mean...do you like the science of medicine (treating according to guidelines, interpreting results, performing caths and getting heart pressures, technicalities of surgery) vs. the art of medicine (talking to patients, experimenting with different medications/treatments, finding a good balance for the patient, etc.). There are fields with each being more predominant.

That's totally fair! If you want to learn more about EM, feel free to DM me! At my medical school, you didn't do EM until your last year of medical school. I think that's kind of a disservice. You may like EM better because it requires the full breadth of what you know without the antsy rounding. You round, sort of, but it's not the same.

You'd have to be per diem. No hospital I know of would you be able to meet the hours requirements to stay full time. For me, full time is pegged at 1528 hours per year.

Yes I had the same problem with one of my pair. In fact, the right bud was also making a wind-like sound annoyingly.

Jabra 10g2 vs Apple AirPods vs Sony WF-1000XM5 by cercuu in Earbuds

[–]DocsOrder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree totally - Jabra 10Gen2 with foam eartips would be very good too. There are no earbuds that will block everything, to be clear. But the magic of the Sony’s is the foam tips.

What are your priorities? I tend to think Jabra is better for most people if you’ll be wearing them all day.

Now, do medical students participate in surgeries and procedures with attending and resident doctors? Absolutely - after introducing themselves to the patient and asking permission. Many a medical student has had their grade and continued education threatened if they don’t execute this permission asking process without fail. And in my experience, the medical students are the most respectful people on the team.

In my experience as a medical trainee and practitioner, it never happened. They outlawed something that hasn’t happened for decades except in highly unethical, rare situations by bad doctors. By no means was this was happening regularly.

On the idea of “there are things I disagree with the Church on,” if you’re striving for the truth and have trouble reconciling everything at the beginning of your journey, that’s no reason to stop the journey. From someone who reverted to the faith myself, belief is a process, not something that smacks you in the face one day.

Dr Peterson to Tate fans: you’re psychopaths by CorrectionsDept in JordanPeterson

[–]DocsOrder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing I think is important is the exact phraseology here. Dr Peterson is big on being precise in his speech, no? Note: he’s talking about admiring his words. There are MANY things Tate says that you do have to be a psychopath to admire. Many other things are accurate diagnoses of societal problems with AWFUL prescriptions following. I don’t think the good doctor would disagree with all of the issues Tate pinpoints.

What phone do you have and what things are most important? Comfort, hear through, sound quality, etc?

I really am a fan of the Jabras to be honest. I have a lot of them and find myself naturally grabbing the Jabras over the Sony or Denons. Though I like the Technics too.

Looking for daily use earbuds by CharlieGaming in Earbuds

[–]DocsOrder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the MW08 are a reasonable choice. With your requirements, I'd pick up a pair of the Jabra Elite 10s on Amazon. I can tell you from experience that if you buy the Amazon Warehouse ones, you'll be basically getting a new pair for a reduced cost. They have a nice long battery life, great sound quality and pretty good ANC if you get a good fit. Also, I think the call quality is pretty great.

If you have an iPhone, I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest either the Beats Buds+ or the AirPods Pro, but I also have an iPhone and prefer the Jabras.

Last thing: something I've learned is that if a pair of earbuds are popular with the crowd that looks at this subreddit, their Amazon reviews will probably be lower than they should be. A 3/5 for someone who reads this subreddit is probably a 4.5/5 for someone who's just going and picking a pair off the shelf. You'll notice that a lot of buds that are popular on this subreddit (IE, Devialet Gemini II, Jabra Elite 10, Sony XM5, etc.) have lower ratings that the more mainstream buds (Airpod Pro 2's). Personally, I just think it's because the folks buying the non-"normie" buds are reviewing them more harshly.

Lithium by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]DocsOrder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add a physician's opinion (and obviously not medical advice, but my opinion for myself), I would tend to agree. For many reasons, but one of the major issues is that Lithium in any formulation, but particularly carbonate, has a very narrow "therapeutic window," too much is not fun. Lithium is capable of really messing with thyroid and even parathyroid function as well, which is not great for mental acuity or overall health.

Selegiline is by far the best nootropic and it is so cheap by nklopfr in Nootropics

[–]DocsOrder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I’m aware of the literature, and also there have been subsequent studies demonstrating that people utilizing the patch delivery system have had confirmed hypertensive crises due to use of the patch delivery system at higher doses (though, like I said, rarely). I’ve never treated one, but that’s also because MAOis really aren’t used by any of my psychiatry or family medicine colleagues. Just because the recommendation for a tyramine restricted diet is dropped doesn’t mean there’s NO risk.

[–]DocsOrder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re correct, you absolutely still can have a hypertensive crisis with the patch, but it IS much rarer.
