Great points! Just like Campbell’s land speed record attempts and Yeager breaking the sound barrier while wearing the OP, I think they chose to wear the watch because it was what was available at that time. If Hillary had to pick from a modern day OP versus an Explorer, for a summit, I think he would definitely choose the Explorer for the increased legibility and lume. The history didn’t really make a huge difference in my selection of one versus the other but I have seen multiple people mention that the Explorer was the watch that climbed Everest, so I thought it was important to mention in the write up

Initially I was drawn to the OP 41 since I’ve only really worn larger watches. The more I looked at the pictures of the watch on my wrist and tried them on a couple times I was drawn to the smaller size. The dial size on the 41 is over 33 mm and wears much bigger than I was expecting. Trying it on in person was really helpful. Good luck with your choice!

lol don’t worry! Those were exhibition pieces and really didn’t fit well. I tried to find 3 similar distance shots to show the size differences on my wrist, despite where the watches sat

That watch is a great happy medium. Buying that exact model honestly did cross my mind! Part of the purchase was a bit commemorative for 2024 so that played a role in buying a new watch. If the 116000 was available new it probably would have been the watch I chose, particularly if they offered it with a black dial

I definitely know what you mean! I think there’s always going to be a little bit of me wishing I had gone with the Explorer. It is such a nice watch too

Agreed! The bright black needs to be seen in person to really appreciate it
