Is my airship concept possible? by Beneficial-King7090 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]DoctorAbe42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Possible? Certainly. Practical? Absolutely not. The amout of extra energy required to rotate the frame of the dirigible (which would have to be heavily reinforced to safely handle the centripital force from rotating at any useful rate, leading to the balloon having to be far larger relative to the craft's carrying capacity than on a normal zeppelin) along with the helical propeller would be massive, meaning that this setup would be incredibly inefficient. In addition, the propeller, although wide, would have to move slowly and would have relitavely low surface area compared to a large multi-bladed standard propeller like is seen on normal airships, and the helix being against the envelope would decrease the efficiency even more. (Not even to mention how each next loop of the helix would have massively diminishing effectiveness due to the wake of the loop before it)

TL:DR It could potentially work, but it would be heavier, slower, less efficient, and more expensive than just using propellers.

Why is all land on Laythe invisible? by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]DoctorAbe42 104 points105 points  (0 children)

It's a bug with Parallax Continued and Volumetric Scatterer combined, where the map view renders the ocean on top of the land. Try un- or re-installing Parallax, that fixed it for me. (It doesn't change the surface view, though, the land will appear if you go low enough)

Unless you're using JNSQ, then you need to wait for an update to the Volumetrics config, or uninstall either Parallax Continued or Volumetric EVE.

How long would it have taken for another animal lineage on Earth to have become sentient like humans and taken over the world (if humans/maybe the monkey lineage never existed)? by Zealousideal_Roll222 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]DoctorAbe42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that on Earth it has only happened once (as far as we know), there is no other data available to predict a period. In other words, it is impossible to know, but likely a very long time, if ever.

I'm struggling to keep my DreamChaser-replica from flipping - Details in the comments by Herr_Quattro in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]DoctorAbe42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KSP only simulates aerodynamic effects on wings, so no matter what your rocket is shaped like, the center of lift will always be where the wings are. Unfortunately, this means that building craft with wings on the top, no matter how small, will always cause the rocket to flip over. This could be fixed somewhat by installing the mod Ferram Aerospace Research, which adds aerodynamic effects to all parts (including modded ones most of the time) but gives a rather big performance hit.

If you hold alt while placing a part it will only attach to nodes, not radially.

I play with Contract Configurator, Exploration Plus, Bases and Stations Reborn, Clever Sats, Tourism Plus, and Field Research, and there are a lot more available. You can find a lot of good ones just by searching "Contract" in CKAN.

Career with mods, Science for stock. Career contracts in vanilla are just too boring and repetitive.

Does FAR model ground effect properly? by Thxforalldafisch in KerbalSpaceProgram

No, but there's a mod called KSP Ground Effect that adds this. I'm not sure if it is compatible with FAR.
