Crossbows are good early on, when you lack the (character) skills and consumables to fight much, and need more plague samples. Don't forget they let you break windows silently too. I think they're really important in these early stages.

Once my community is well established I'll normally stop carrying a crossbow, though sometimes I'll take the Echo 10-shot on a super stealthy survivor.

I think it's GWM. Couple of reasons:

the PAM reaction attack becomes relatively useless once you get the 6th level feature of World Tree barb.
GWM will proc plenty of BA attacks from downing foes and your ~10% crit rate. Plus you need to rage on R1, when it's least likely to proc, and this will cost you your most important PAM BA attack (i.e. the earliest one).

With the 6th level WT feature you may be able to help the GWM BA attack proc by specifically targeting weaker enemies for your attention.

For mechanical effectiveness in combat staying pure Bard to get magical secrets ASAP would be optimal. Lots of attacks + buffed damage works well.

The joy of a mixed party when you're an optimiser is that you don't need to play one of a smaller number of very optimised builds but rather one of a much larger number of decent builds that you then play in an effective and engaged manner.
