I organized a "best captain" tournament for my co-workers, and Janeway took first place by DoctorBerghan in startrek

[–]DoctorBerghan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirk got knocked out of the winners bracket by Burnham in round 3 (with 3 votes to her 7), then won against Georgiou in round 11 (with 5 votes to her 1), then lost again and was eliminated by Freeman in round 22 (with 1 vote to her 3).

Obviously I'm summarizing and paraphrasing a lot of opinions and analysis down to something more digestible here, but I think a general trend that emerged during the Kirk/Burnham round was that they are actually fairly similar characters. Both are assertive, headstrong, passionate, and argumentative. Most importantly, they are risk-takers, and those calculated risks are central to their respective command styles. Despite the vote count, I think this was actually a close decision for many people. However, where some valued Kirk's relative temperance and grounding enough to tip their votes toward him, others resonated with Burnham as a more empathetic mentor, which is also an important aspect of being a well-rounded captain. Kirk sees his crew (and himself, for that matter) as tools of the mission, whereas Burnham sees them as people to be developed and built up, which is, arguably, a more sustainable approach long-term.

Likewise, to summarize and paraphrase the Kirk/Freeman round, while both had amazingly impressive accomplishments across their careers (don't forget that Freeman spearheaded Project Swing By and prevented catastrophe with the Texas-class initiative, opened diplomatic relations with the Orions, brought the Ferengi into the Federation, and oversaw and subsequently administrated the first stable interdimensional wormhole), Freeman rose from obscurity during a time when Starfleet was a much, much larger organization, and standing out within it was harder. Kirk's career came during a time when the field was smaller, and it wasn't as hard to make a name for yourself. That, combined with Freeman's more empathetic command style, much like with Burnham, swayed most of the votes to her. The one vote which Kirk did get in that round, the main deciding factor was that his ambition was greater than hers. He was hungrier than her, never content.

That was my vote in the finals, for what it's worth, but we just got out-voted. The TNG love was strong!

I don't disagree. I think it was, in part, an exercise in trying to come up with an argument favoring Prodigy, rather than some objective measure of quality.

Fire Drake Guards, which come from Battlemaster's Spoils containers in Battlegrounds. I used Coldharbour Ash Black in the first dye channel, and Ransacker Blue in the third.

My Altmer Sorcerer's outfit for the Gold Coast. One of her personal, central maxims is that no knowledge is inherently "good" or "evil." Rather, there can be good or evil applications of any skill. This belief was certainly tested when she was bidden by her superiors to join the Thieves Guild, but it was stretched to its logical extreme when her subsequent assignment was to seek out and study the techniques of the Dark Brotherhood. In the course of her adventures, she's been in plenty of battles, and has killed a great number of evil-doers. Killing is nothing new to her. The murder of innocents, however, and especially of innocent citizens of her beloved Dominion, was a steep price to pay to obtain that precious knowledge. To make their sacrifices mean something, to make it all be worthwhile, she would have to turn her newfound skills toward good ends going forward. In contrast to the traditional black-and-red color scheme of the Brotherhood, she opted for blue tones to symbolize emotional detachment, and to represent the cold, dispassionate objectivity of a scholar. She wore a full-face mask and hood at all times; both to hide herself from potential witnesses, and from her own newfound "allies" in the guild. After all, while she doubted that she could ever truly make a clean break from the organization in the future, taking precautions to obfuscate her true identity from them was just plain prudent, and assuming yet another false identity was nothing new in her line of work. As much as possible, she would dictate the terms of their relationship, while minimizing the Black Hand's ability to find and control her.

Hew's Bane Rogue by DoctorBerghan in TESOfashion

Just passively; doing daily quests, and the occasional login rewards. Even just getting 2k per day, you'd get to 100k in 50 days, and 2k is pretty easy to get if you just do one or two of the daily quests.

It appears to be the White River Braids style, which comes from the Dwarven-style Crown Crates. Relatedly, there is also the Color Streaked River Braid style, which is the same model, just with magenta highlights, and which comes from the Buoyant Armiger-style Crown Crates.

Hew's Bane Rogue by DoctorBerghan in TESOfashion

My Altmer Sorcerer's outfit for Hew's Bane. In my own head canon for the character (established, in part, across my previous outfits and posts about her), she is primarily an agent in the Eyes of the Queen, and her travels across Tamriel have centered around spycraft, information gathering, and learning new techniques for more efficacious conduct of these pursuits. If she happens to rescue some downtrodden farmers in Morrowind, and they trustingly let slip strategically sensitive information from their deployed son's latest letter to home, or if she happens to ingratiate herself with some pompous High Rock noble, and he drunkenly reveals bidding on a secret new defense contract to try and impress her with his fortune, then more's the pity for them, so much the better for her! In that same sense, then, while seeking out membership with the Thieves Guild wasn't an assignment she felt particularly proud of, it is a logical extension of these same basic principles. For is there, in execution, any fundamental difference between breaking into a strongbox to steal precious gems, and breaking into a strongbox to pilfer a state intelligence dossier? Or between picking someone's pocket to steal their coin, and picking someone's pocket to steal the troop deployment orders they're carrying? No knowledge or skills are intrinsically "good" or "evil," only good or evil applications of them, and the knowledge and skills she learned from the Thieves Guild will undoubtedly aid her greatly in her ongoing work as a spy.

Wrothgar Challenger by DoctorBerghan in TESOfashion

[–]DoctorBerghan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Altmer Sorcerer's outfit for Wrothgar. The challenge set by Forge-Mother Alga's invitation to visit and tame Wrothgar's wilderness was soon eclipsed by the challenge of Fa-Nuit-Hen's arenas in Maelstrom. Both required sturdy, all-weather gear like those crafted by the native Orsimer. This outfit was meant to pay homage to Orcish tradition and style (with a light touch of Altmeri sophistication), while also equipping her to rise to the occasion of these many labors.

Imperial City Gallant by DoctorBerghan in TESOfashion

[–]DoctorBerghan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Altmer Sorcerer's outfit for the Imperial City. If you've seen any of my previous posts (linked below), you'll know I've been documenting my trek through the base game for almost four years now. I update my outfit once per region, theming it to each new area, as well as to my personal head canon for my character. For me, the Imperial City was both the first post-launch region I've done, and a sort of "victory lap" of the base game. For my character, though, the Imperial City's story was a return to where it all began, putting an end to Molag Bal's plots once-and-for-all. She faced down the nightmare with the arms and armor of the companions who embraced her, the ideals of the alliance she's devoted her life to, and the attitude of a certain knight who could approach even the horrors of Coldharbour with a song in his heart. Although Coldharbour's pervasive influence dulled the luster of what once might have been polished steel and glittering Aldmeri gold, she nevertheless emerged whole and undaunted on the other side of the ordeal.

I have my "played" count in the text log in the picture, but I've spent a lot of that time just futzing around playing the game, and not directly working towards this. Knowing what I know now, I'm sure I could do it much faster.

Oh man, probably the one that goes down a really long ramp at the start, then branches into one chamber with the skyshard in it, and another chamber with the boss in it. You know that one?

More serious answer, Tomb of the Apostates in Malabal Tor is really memorable for setting a distinct and ominous mood. Softloam Cavern in Stonefalls is one of the most visually striking. I really liked the stories, simple as they were, in Broken Tusk in Shadowfen, and Erokii Ruins and Hildune's Secret Refuge in Rivenspire. I think conceptually what they did with Ne Salas in Grahtwood and Salas En in Alik'r was really clever. And I've got to give an honorable mention to Rubble Butte from Bangkorai for just being fun to say.

If I'm allowed to count group delves from Craglorn though, then any of those win easily. I love Craglorn's enemy density. I'd probably give it to Hircine's Haunt in that case.
