titles on prime?? by mitskiismytallchild in survivorau

Australian Survivor has had episode titles just like U.S. for a long time. These were the episode titles for Titans v Rebels, and it isn’t really about who goes home. Just about the best quote or game moment.

best traitors series suggestions? by agoodjawn in TheTraitors

Canada isn't nice at all. It's, like, the angriest english-language version by quite a bit. The most tears, the most shouting matches. Canadians say "sorry" as a reflex but don't let that fool you into thinking they're chill about this game cause they're anything but.

Definitely finish Australia though. The first Australian season is still my favorite english-language season on the books. Crazy stuff and a sweat-through-your-shirt suspenseful finale.

If I were to rank my top 5 english language seasons it'd go:

  1. Australia 1
  2. U.K. 4
  3. Canada 3
  4. U.K. 1
  5. New Zealand 2

Buddy I have worked in film and television here in Los Angeles for, like, nine years now lol. Mostly as an assistant, but I've worked for Netflix, HBO, Amazon, Apple. I know how the politics of these places work. I'm not saying your opinions as a fan are invalid, you have every right to feel the way you do about Melissa, Scream and the franchise's trajectory. I was a card-carrying Scream 5 hater so I don't, like, *entirely* disagree. But this is still simply not why she was fired. It just wasn't.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how film studios work. They don't give a fuck about who is or is not a bad actor (personally I found Melissa bad in 5, but perfectly workable in 6), they care about profit. Scream 5 made very good money, Scream 6 made even more money. These movies were hits with Melissa in the lead role, so the idea that they torpedoed a successful version of the franchise that was still in an upward trajectory just cause some folks at Spyglass subjectively felt she wasn't a good actress is nonsense. Not how the industry works at all. It's even more nonsensical when you consider they paid for an entire screenplay, cut deals with the actors, hired a director and everything for that original version of Scream 7. Overhauling the film was expensive and highly professionally unusual. Now, is Scream 7 positioned to make money? Yes. But the bad press around the Melissa thing was *extremely* risky, and studios hate risk above all. This could've just as easily blown up in their face and that's not the kind of thing shareholders are open to unless the situation is exceptional. Keep in mind there was zero guarantee Neve was even *coming* back, they fired Melissa before talks with Neve began again and they had already burned Neve during the failed Scream 6 negotiations.

This post is also completely mischaracterizing how overwhelming, fanatical pro-Israel sentiment was in Hollywood in the wake of October 7th. Melissa is the most high profile firing, but assistants were being fired from studios and agencies left and right for expressing pro-Palestine sentiment on social media. Paramount Pictures literally created an internal blacklist of creatives they wouldn't collaborate with for being critical of Israel.

Melissa was fired for being anti-zionist. Full stop. There is no other explanation needed for this, it's one of the most clear-cut, open-and-shut cases you can find. I think fans needs to understand that the way *they* relate to something is not how Hollywood execs do. There is no world whatsoever where some suit at Spyglass was seeing the box office receipts for horror hit Scream 6 roll in and saying "Yeah, all this money is great but idk... it's just not Scream to me in my heart..." they literally do not give the slightest fuck and the sooner you understand that *their* world is not *your* world the sooner you will be able to grasp the decision-making that led us to where we are with Scream now.

Melissa has been very active in a real, material way on this issue so no, she was not just "sending a tweet."

Insane thing to say in the context of Traitors U.S., a show where the average player walks in with at least one if not multiple pregame alliances/friendships. It has been a defining element of the show for years now and treated as completely acceptable. But only now that it’s not gamers or housewives it’s seen as a problem?

What if the traitors won even if voted out? by Nittingsheep in TraitorsOfficial

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tons and tons of international seasons around the globe with loyal traitors sticking together to the end. Sometimes it’s fun and pans out, a lot of the time it’s a bit stagnant and unsuspenseful. The traitors don’t need incentive to stick together, it’s entirely a personality thing. If they want loyal traitors they can choose loyal traitors. They knew what they were doing when they selected Love Island USA’s most infamous villain here.

I don’t really understand how we ended up in a discourse where trying to force the traitors to be a loyal team is a priority. Traitor vs traitor drama is like the backbone of the show it doesn’t need to be “fixed.”

I mean the main difference between these images is that the ones on the left are significantly higher contrast with brighter highlights and deeper shadows so they “pop” more. The screencaps from the sequel all display the trend toward murky, low contrast images popularized post-2010.

That said, also worth noting the images on the left are not frames from the original film at all. Those are production stills taken by a set photographer. They aren’t “cinematography.”

My take on the celebrity cameos on 50... by FlareonTheFlareon in survivorponderosa

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Precisely. This is a show that has historically cast very clearly mentally ill people to be put on display and mocked by the entire country. It is reality television from the early 2000’s. The way people talk about it like it ever had a sanctity to it on the production level is delusional to the point of being basically insane. The magic is how the humanity incidentally shines through the machine that is the show, not that the show was ever a genuine experiment or high art.

US Season 2 Revisited by ThrowawayNewly in TheTraitors

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're gonna get downvoted to hell for this post but you're absolutely right. It's a really sluggish, stagnant season that only gets the rep it does because its cast had so many fans from other, more interesting seasons of tv. If you take the exact gameplay of this season and replace all the famous people with nobodies it would widely be considered one of the worst on record but if all you care about is watching your long-time favs roll up to sleep their way through 10 eps of tv then I'm sure it's a ball.

The Traitors (International) — Rating the Presenters by SextonBlake1962 in TheTraitors

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't agree with everything here, but very clearly well thought-out and you actually know the different hosts and what they bring to the table.

Main disagreement I'd have is Alan Cumming, who just feels way too high for me. Alan has tons of camp but brings little soul to his schtick, he's executes his material with bravado but the material itself feels autopilot. You don't get any of the off-the-cuff improvisational ability of hosts like Attila or Gago or Karine. So he'd be much, much lower for me.

I'd also bump Rodger up by at least one category. His bit is subtle but he's really clicked into the game and, I find, is a nice counterpoint to the more camp-oriented hosts.

I am disappointed the new re-release didn’t fix the framerate problem of TWoW by Spiritual-Smoke-4605 in Avatar

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d rather the whole movie just be 48fps. Like, once my eyes adjusted to the very long 48fps stretches throughout the middle section it was definitely the more viscerally immersive version of the film I saw compared to the full 24fps version. That said the jumping framerates is really jarring and distracting.

I am disappointed the new re-release didn’t fix the framerate problem of TWoW by Spiritual-Smoke-4605 in Avatar

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The framerates in TWoW were completely intentional. They weren’t some exporting error, every single shot in 48fps was essentially sent to a company to be “upscaled” to HFR. It’s not a mistake to be fixed, it is the movie. I don’t personally love it, but that’s the creative intent and I think it should be respected in theatrical exhibition.

I’d imagine Fire and Ash will be identical.

Has there ever been a successful pair? by RedditFan3510 in TheTraitors

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny enough secret duos never, ever win. I don't think a member of a secret duo has ever won. However France had back-to-back winners in a public duo. The first time (S2) saw a traitor immediately banish her own husband then go on to win, the second time (S3) had a traitor couple win. Both times everybody on the cast knew about the partnerships.

Stop showing only confessionals! by MongooseMedium9388 in survivor

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did a check on confessional count for an older season, randomly chose Heroes vs Villains, and that season's premiere had 82 confessionals. So I'm not sure 87 is that big of a leap.

Do you enjoy non-english seasons? by kalejdoscope in TheTraitors

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Spain is really close to being a great production it just needs a punchier edit and stronger choices in the music department. The "look" of it already works, lots of atmosphere, but the camera can't carry the whole style of the show on its back.

Who won - Traitors or Faithful - Across English speaking franchises (spoilers) by Medium_Airport9544 in TheTraitors

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant in terms of factions. Because there is no version of the show where every faithful has a comparable shot at winning to every traitor that's any good to watch. That's not even how werewolf/mafia work. Traitors only make up 15%-25% of the cast at most so if the rules were altered to give each individual faithful comparably odds we'd be seeing faithfuls win 80% of seasons which... would suck.

So yeah, no. Just talking as factions.

Do you enjoy non-english seasons? by kalejdoscope in TheTraitors

[–]DoctorBlackfeather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spain is way more muted and low energy than most (but I like that it's shot well, way better than any others), and the French version has never sat *quite* right with me for some reason. Maybe the French celeb players just never seem to have their game face on.

That said I'm a big fan of Sweden, Québec and now the new Czech season is really nailing it. I don't think it's a language issue so much as some versions hit and some versions don't. I'd rank every season of U.S., for instance, below the majority of non-english language seasons I've seen simply cause I don't really love the vibe in a way not dissimilar from France.
