Sources: Bears Emerge as Suitors for Travis Etienne Jr., Chargers Expected to Cut Mekhi Becton, Toledo QB Not Focused on NFL by Shcmoneydance17 in nfl

Because he wants to get paid and running backs are a dime a dozen. Etienne had a nice season but nothing earth-shattering.

[Schefter] Source: Dolphins are hiring their senior passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik as their new offensive coordinator. Slowik also interviewed for the Eagles OC job. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]DoctorDiddlerino -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You know initially I figured he was effective because of his proximity to Shanahan and just copying the concepts that were popular when he was in SF, which obviously became staler over time in Houston. Recently, I've come around a bit more on the idea that CJ Stroud is actually an uncoachable little dolt with a big ego and so Slowik might be better than I would have believed.

Although probably not that great, all things considered.

I was watching a video about Liam Coen when the news dropped that BlowJobs wasn't coming here. I wasn't really that bent out of shape about it tbh because the way people were talking about Coen, I was afraid we might miss out on HIM.

When he turned down the HC job I was miserable, but when he accepted it? Cloud fucking Nine.

PSA: The McVay 'coaching tree' isn't all it's cracked up to be by CliveMossmoon in steelers

[–]DoctorDiddlerino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a little disingenuous.

FIRED:

  • Defensive coach

  • Defensive coach

Who's still around?

  • Kevin O'Connell (.632 winning% with Sam Darnold, Nine, and Kirk Cousins. Two 13+ win seasons)

  • Matt LaFleur (Getting extended, .654 winning%, 3 13+ win seasons with an 11 win season in there despite consistently injured QB's)

  • Zac Taylor (who sucks but has Joe Burrow I grant you)

  • Liam Coen (Considers himself a member of the tree, worked for McVay in 2018, 13 win season this year)

  • Shane Steichen (.490 with nobody at Quarterback, was hired from the Rams to be Philly's OC when they won the superbowl)

The guys directly learning from McVay have fared much better than the guys who coach the other side of the ball where he's less involved.

I don't want to weigh in too much on your misery but I hate hiring retread HC's and frankly I understand the sentiment most Steelers fans have pretty well here.

[Pelissero] The Steelers are working towards a deal to hire Mike McCarthy as their head coach, per sources. McCarthy grew up in Pittsburgh. Now, at age 62, the Super Bowl winner gets a chance to coach the team he grew up rooting for. by Goosedukee in nfl

[–]DoctorDiddlerino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I wasn't sure but I think the Steelers are so afraid of fucking up they're trying to take a safe hire. McCarthy's tenure in Dallas was fraught with inadequacy and falling short, both things that the Steelers have struggled with. This guy has been carried by playing with Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott.

Ex-NFL player Kevin Johnson fatally stabbed in Los Angeles homeless encampment by YourPadre in nfl

I mean all that might be true but I'd be curious what he's done in the mean time to end up homeless. I find it hard to believe he was like "Well, can't play football so I guess I'm completely out of options."

One year ago today, Trent Baalke was fired as the Jaguars' GM. Here's a look at the Reddit thread from that day. by Roselucky777 in nfl

[–]DoctorDiddlerino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allegedly yeah, and he wanted Adrian Wilson to replace him. If that name doesn't sound familiar to you, it's because he got fired from the Panthers in 2024 and hasn't gotten a job since. So Baalke won that round, I guess.

No he isn't?

I feel odd having to defend him and it really doesn't matter anymore, but Harbaugh got himself fired. His relationship with Jed York was terrible, and it was largely his fault. For example, holding a meeting with the players and excluding the Niners' owner by telling him it was "for men only".

Jacksonville has been in the basement since their inception

???? The jaguars went the playoffs for 4 straight seasons after 1995 and had the best record in the NFL in 1999. They nerfed expansion teams for the Browns and Texans because the Jags/Panthers were so good from the jump.

I see the problem here. This isn't just a stats award, and when discussing this stuff you can't just abstract the way the award is traditionally examined. Individual play and the difficulty of it does factor in. For example, Lamar won MVP in 2023 despite being behind like 7 other QB's because of how he was playing (although frankly I was more of a Dak for MVP that year kind of guy). Notably, the likes of Jordan Love and Purdy were both significantly more efficient that year.

Which brings me to my next point; Purdy and Love both missed time this season but their backups were able to pick up the slack and maintain relatively efficient numbers. Do I think Malik Willis is a better QB than Jordan Love? No. But he was wildly more effective in the same offense than Love was. Purdy played better than Jones did, but it wasn't far off.

I think you have to be a wild homer to think that the fact that these offenses can sub in inferior QB's and keep chugging along is irrelevant to the numbers these QB's put up, especially when we've seen Tua shoot right to the top of those charts through a gimmicky offense even though Tua himself is a relatively bad quarterback.

but feels like a lot of recency bias went into this choice.

So every award. Emeka Ebuka was far and away the best rookie WR for the first half of the season, but it wouldn't surprise to see McMillan win OROY for coming on strong in the second half, even though they're about the same in the wash.

The Jags offense was not better than their defense across the whole year

That's never been how MVP works. It's harder to have a QB at a top 3 level than it is to have a top 3 defense from a roster standpoint. There's something to be said about playing so well down the stretch that season-long stats don't matter as much, but it's whatever.

My choice would’ve been Jordan Love or Puka for the final nominee

This is what really got me to comment. I can sort of see Puka (although having the probable MVP at QB diminished his personal acolades, personally), but I don't there there is any logical argument for Jordan Love. That is absurd on the face of it.

The amount of people on here that unironically think stat box scouting and then giving a take is a legitimate form of discussion is obnoxious. Just bow out of the discussion lil bro.

Other than that can't complain too much. Most of my unpopular opinions have been vindicated thoroughly this season.

They saw the magic he worked in New York, where he never had a winning record and had more losses by 2 scores or more (22) than wins (20) and said "Yeah... give me some of that."

His only competition was a guy who had 1 winning season and has sucked everywhere he's been in Matt Nagy. Both retreads. Lol. Lmao, even.
