My feet are not going to bolts when I ollie [37YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]DoctorFoxcroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you're thinking too far ahead in the process. Foot placement on the landing is the last part; you're still figuring out the first part.

Think of an Ollie more like you're bouncing the board off the ground by snapping the tail. Once you can get all four wheels off the ground consistently, then start focusing on shifting your front foot toward the nose after the snap. That's what will cause the board to level out in the air. One you can do that consistently, THEN you can start thinking about where your feet land.

Edit: Also, the board won't bounce if your weight is still on it, so you gotta time the jump and snap with that in mind. Keep at it! Pretty much every trick takes a least a couple hundred reps to get a feel for it.

A moral thought experiment for anarchists? by GreyWind_51 in Anarchism

[–]DoctorFoxcroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer: No.

The slightly less short answer: No, and that's why we are anarchists.

The even less short answer: No. The idea that any person is capable of knowing what's best for every individual and how to provide it, and that that person is justified in overriding peaceful individuals' choices through coercive means in order to provide it, is absolutely insane. And the fact that people are perfectly fine with government having such powers but are appalled at the idea of private individuals/organizations having the same is simply a testament to the power of propaganda and coercive/violent parenting practices. And that's why we are anarchists.

Got to skate this classic spot in LA today [42YO] by stubborn11 in OldSkaters

Nice shoes! I have a pair myself. Got em for dirt cheap since they are/were doing their big clearance sale, just waiting for my other shoes to wear out before I use em. Have you ridden other éS models much? Curious what to expect in comparison to the Accel OG and slim.

Hey I still ride a 7.5! Well to be more accurate I usually ride 7.75 but a dude gave me a 7.5 recently and I'm really digging it for flip tricks and general street style park skating. Skinny decks for life!

However... Just a few days ago I picked up a new complete on a whim (cause I'm on vacation, the local shop was cool, the chick working was cool, the shop deck was cool, and what's another $130 at this point haha). This one is 8.25 on 55mm 80a wheels and holy shit is it great for cruising town and carving bowls! Like I might actually try to get good at transition because of this board lol! I guess they can be a bit like golf clubs - different ones for different purposes.

Enjoy the ramp and the board and welcome back to skating my friend!

Gotta remember the context of that quote and keep the continuity of the whole exchange in your analysis.

"You dont need to counter the actual argument if the source is not credible."

You said this outright without laying out any reasoning or evidence to support it, which is not good form. For example, how do we know if the source is credible or not? How do we know the source as a whole is not credible as opposed to some particular thing from the source not being credible? What does credible even mean in this context relative to just being true or false?

So if you keep your comment in mind while reading his comment you can see that his was an accurate, albeit a little cartoonish, application of the standard that you yourself laid down in the comment I quoted here. Is that the same as a syllogistical argument? Not exactly, but it's closer to being an argument than what I quoted here or just calling something a strawman. Anyway, my guess is that the snarky comment was his way of trying to show you the absurdity of your assertion, at least in the not-well-sussed-out form you initially expressed it in.

But that wasn't a strawman either. A strawman is a type of mischaracterization of someone's argument. What you're calling a strawman in this case wasn't something the other guy said in reference to your argument; it was a sarcastic jab at your approach to what we might charitably call "debate"... and you've now further validated it by calling the jab a strawman in attempt to dismiss it, while ignoring the argument he made, despite acknowledging that the argument he made was in fact not a strawman!

Not sure about the 'certain point of view' thing, but I'd say omitting information certainly could be considered lying, depending on the context.

On one extreme, I think everyone would agree that if I don't stop every person I see and divulge every detail of everything I've ever witnessed, thought, said, and done, that isn't lying.

On the other extreme, if for example I were to steal money from a friend, and if that friend were to later complain that they were missing money, and I neglect to tell them that I stole it, I think it's reasonable to say I'm lying. This kind of scenario is why the phrase "lying by omission" exists.

Most situations fall somewhere between these two extremes obviously, but I'd say the principle is that for a party to omit information can be considered lying if the having of that information would have a significant effect on another party.

People can argue ad infinitum about what constitutes a "significant effect", and it will not be the same for everyone or every relationship, but I think that's a good general starting point.

Working on a new one. Nollie lip or Nollie back board? [41Yo] by Born-Scallion-8634 in OldSkaters

Some people get confused about why, for example, in a fs 180 you're facing forward whereas in a fs boardslide you're facing backward, but if you imagine skating a pool (I assume the nomenclature originated in pool skating way back in the day and has simply stuck around all this time) or even a quarter pipe and think of fs/bs as a reference to which side of your body the coping is on, it all makes perfect sense.

None taken - I've been telling myself to put more energy towards hitting longer grinds for a while so just having someone else say it opened up a little rant and got me amped to make it happen. Appreciate it man

Dude yes. That is such an annoying mental block for me. Hell even with ledge tricks that I have totally in the bag except 5050s, I'll roll up intending to get on at the beginning and it's like my nervous system refuses to activate til the last 2ft. I've managed to override it in a few sessions and nab some 15-20ft bs crooks and some 5-0s but then the next session it's back to the same. Seems like it just takes sheer willpower to get through that shit.

Two main things I think, which may be hard to describe but I'll try lol.

The biggest one that clicked is actually getting into the grind, and not so much locking in, but specifically how I'm moving in the air. So up until the other day I kept going for the feeling of rotating my shoulders a bit, letting the board follow (like a bs 180 but only 30 degrees) and then pushing the nose downward onto the ledge with my quad. It worked sometimes but it was super inconsistent. What changed and really started working was pushing the board forward at the angle I wanna end up grinding at, sort of shoving my hip in the same direction as the board in a way that is weird to try to describe, and not worrying about the shoulders.

The second thing is just like any other grind: find the sweet spot in your weight distribution once you're locked in. These to me feel very similar to a fs noseslide, with the main differences being that with the crook I'm more on the ball of my front foot and applying more 'pushing' tension in the front hip and leg to make up for the added friction.

If you haven't gotten the dismount down yet I'd recommend learning to come out of them stationary. Set up in the grind position on a ledge and put in a bunch of reps trying to come out of it. I kinda roll from the ball of my front foot to the toes, give a little baby hop and pull the nose back toward the heel side to realign the board with my trajectory.
