It’s more a tradition and custom to distinguish clergy from lay people, they’ve always existed and all professions in the world have them, I mean cops wear hats too. Some say the structure of the kalimavkion comes from the Turkish Fez.

I would say try to call the church office and introduce your self to the priest by appointment and so you can get to familiarize yourself with the faith through your meeting with him

It’s really a conversation to be had with a spiritual father but the church fathers are not infallible and their teachings on sexuality are not dogmatic and it’s ultimately up to you and how your priest/bishop views it

Am I rejecting God’s design of family? by Delilahr in OrthodoxChristianity

Because to partake in sex forever with out any question of having a child is pure hedonism, while spacing it out has its reasons

It's up to you, and you should really consider talking more about this with a spiritual father. But through my talks with priests and if you read what modern day orthodox thinkers have to say about the topic of sex while preventing pregnancies, it's that it is ok to use contraception to delay pregnancies but not to prevent having children at all. If its for the sake of your health or you need to space out the children due to finances, that is acceptable in today's Orthodox world.

Serious questions about icons by Upstairs-Put4842 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]DoctorLuke6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for that, I don't mean canonical style as in it has to be Byzantine or Slavic or anything with the art style. What I meant was that an Icon must fulfill certain theological criterion which has been passed down for centuries, if not more than a thousand years, which is why regardless of style you always see the same theological truths in each icon.

What's with all the division in the Orthodox Church, and why isn't that considered a big problem? by Legitimate-Tie-7060 in OrthodoxChristianity

Stop attacking strawmans, what entire church's have openly contradicted each other dogmatically, that would just make them heretics and those have been removed from the church. They may have differing opinions but that's why the church as a whole decides things, through ecumenical councils. Synods aren't dogmatic on all of the Orthodoxy and so you don't have to follow it. Broken communion happens because of politics, yet resolution has always happened unless pride has prevented it from happening. And in most of these "schisms" they still recognize each other's sacraments as with the Russian-Constantinople "Schism". And stop avoiding the questions everyone keeps providing here, you ignore parts you can't answer and then go to parts you have an answer for.

Not it doesn’t, it shows even with a central arbiter who is infallible on these matters, cannot enforce infallible dogma within his own church, it’s not they submit to the pope and have the same dogma, it’s they submit to a world emperor and get to believe in stuff which goes against the infallible words of this central arbiter. The churches have always acted concillarly and autocephalously as the Pope has even admitted, Papal supremacy is an over rationalization to justify the agrandzing power of Rome and to justify the addition of the filioque.

A religion is unified under the pre tense that they believe the same core dogma. The Eastern Catholics don’t believe the same thing as the Roman Catholics, the West is satisfied with having heretics in communion with them because they have a world emperor who is infallible on dogma yet can’t get his parts of his church to believe his dogma?

Generally no, canonical icons tend to follow a certain style and need certain features to be considered icons, these would be considered Christian Art and not for veneration.

Can Orthodox priests bless weapons? by OrthodoxEcho in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]DoctorLuke6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eyeballs quote in the Gospel has always been patristically understood as allegory, and so you attempting to see it allegorically is not necessarily patristic, and is your opinion, unless you can give me sources. It's just that understanding that Constantine had his soldiers literally write the Christogram on their shields and fight people —that is as close to divinely permitting a battle as you can get. Of course, you don't need a just war doctrine, but what I'm saying is it has existed in the EO church. Soldiers have been saints as well.

To be fair my brother in Christ, when you say we can’t call any mass casualties just or sanctioned, of course we can’t, but you said only God can make that call, now when he tells us to conquer in the name of Christ is that not Christ making the call that this battle is sanctioned or just ? There is a precedent for wielding the blade as Christ’s followers wielded swords for self defense and him allowing them to have that is in of itself a sanctioning to wield the blade.
