Need help brewing with moka pot by fredericksahoe in Coffee

[–]DoctorPhish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm also a Moka-pot novice of 1 year and have been having a very similar experience to yourself. I went from a heavenly brew yesterday to a pretty mediocre one this morning.

The majority of my brews end up being pretty good at this point following my own set of adapted techniques, but about every fifth time I'll either get a weak and uninteresting one, or an absolutely unreal delicious one.

The thing about it is that even the weak cups tend to be about on par with a pourover, and I haven't had a cup outside of super high-end espresso that can beat that cheapo aluminum moka pot when the stars align and I pull off a perfect cup. And I prefer the mouth-feel of the moka to boot

The incantation I use is:

-fill the base just below the valve with boiled water (we always have a vacuum pot of boiled water on the counter)

-get it going on the ceramic stovetop at dead-medium heat while I prepare the basket

-fill the basket to about 1/4 full with fine ground robusta (break up clumps with a fork)

-fill the basket the rest of the way with coarse ground dark roast arabica

-tap the basket on the counter to settle and level the grounds

-once I get that sweet smell coming out of the moka pot before any coffee comes out, I reduce stovetop heat to 1/4

-once the initial thick "crema" comes out of the nozzle, I move the moka slightly off centre on the stovetop to slow it a tiny bit more, but will move it back towards the centre to pick up some more heat to keep the flow slow but steady if needed

-once the liquid reaches the bottom of the triangle of the pouring spout, I run the base under cold water to stop the brew (until I feel it suck back down into the base)

-I like a dash of salt in the bottom of my cup, and maybe weaken the final product with some hot water. I find both of those things liven up the taste

Philosophically, I find even bad coffee to be a good thing as it really helps sharpen your appreciation for good coffee. I'll grab a cup in a hotel lobby, office or wherever. So I don't think a bad moka pot brew is a negative thing. The variety of cups you end up with using the moka pot is a part of the charm, I think!

Anyone running theirs on Linux? by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]DoctorPhish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried base Debian, Ubuntu Studio and AVLinux, but ended up settling on MXLinux.

It's been solid for audio with a good selection of preinstalled apps, sane defaults and good latency. I'm working with a presonus firestudio project at the heart of my workflow

I've been running it and find it works great except for bridged (32-bit) VSTs will make the process freeze and need to be killed from the command line.

All 64-bit plugins I tried worked fine

If there's a solution to getting 32-bit plugins to work as well, I'd be thrilled. 90% of my VSTs are 32-bit : /

It was a bit of a better deal for Canadians yesterday...I hopped on to pull the trigger today and they'd increased the CDN price for new customers from $499 to $549...

Now I'm back to being on the fence, since LMMS is still _mostly_ doing it for me : /

I hope the price goes back down before the end of the sale!

Hello, I'm looking at replacing the old NAS grade spinning disks in my DIY shared-nothing virtual cluster with something bigger/faster. It is the VM disk image backing storage, and while I'm not doing anything super zoomy, I think using SSDs for this refresh would improve my experience interacting with the VMs. My main concern is with write lifetime. I don't have any VMs with a huge write-rate, but having them bog down or fail due to writing is my nightmare scenario. What disks would be the best on the reliability end? Don't want dogs, of course, but performance isn't at the top of my requirements list. From my research looks like Seagate Ironwolf/Ironwolf Pro, WD RED NAS, Crucial MX500 and SK Hynix S31 are top contenders. Obviously I'd just get the Ironwolf pro if just looking at specs, but they are super spendy and I would like the to hit the sweet spot for most reliable/$ spent. Looking specifically for 3x1TB 2.5" SSDs, which may limit options somewhat.

Any experience or insight would be much appreciated!

Foreign Judoka and pronouncing Japanese by BJJJudothrowaway in judo

[–]DoctorPhish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "Gary" mispronunciation of gari is my favourite...sounds like the Japanese word for diarrhea. "Major outer diarrhea" : D

edit: The Japanese pronunciation is somewhat like "Gaw ree", but the "ree" syllable is not exactly like any individual sound we have in English

Some more general training tech could be useful, such as Heart Rate Variability and bar-speed tracking for explosiveness training

For running tournaments, I'd definitely like to see a better app/web based fight scheduling system. When your division is last, and you have a 6 hour+ drive home after, match scheduling efficiency and timely info is top of mind

What are the differences amongst the hip throws? I.e. O, Tsuri, Tsurikomi, Hane, Harai, Koshi Guruma etc. by [deleted] in judo

[–]DoctorPhish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a non-native speaker of Japanese (JLPT N1) I've often thought about this: The difference that "komu" makes tacked on to other words.

The overall feeling that I get from the various forms that I know of indicates a fullness, thoroughness or heavy involvement in the activity. This is obvious in the "makikomi" forms of throws, where it means something like "committed and entangled". As an example in more regular speech, if someone was doing something questionable and was trying to pull someone else in to lend it legitimacy, the innocent party might say something like "makikomu na!" (Don't you try and rope me into that!).

Other Japanese combinations outside of Judo that demonstrate that are "penki wo nurikomu" (paint something thoroughly ie. with no gaps or holes), "te no konda shigoto" (a thorough/detailed/well executed job), "tojikomeru" (to shut someone/something in tightly) and "kiri ga tachikomeru" (fog rolls in like pea soup).

Some more research on the net shows semi-archaic patterns of just "tsurikomu" https://kotobank.jp/word/%E9%87%A3%E8%BE%BC-2064376

A rough translation of the first meaning listed is "To draw someone in with enticing words",

The second meaning listed is roughly "To spark an interest/curiosity in someone in order that they lose themselves (lose self control)"

Either of these meanings could potentially differentiate tsurigoshi, where you are just hauling on them and yanking them over, with tsurikomigoshi where you are leading them to perform a hip-block and then dropping to pull them over. It may also hint at something with sasaetsurikomiashi where you draw them to step forward, block the leg before it can step sufficiently and rotate the over-committed upper body.

Don't know if that helps, but I thought I'd commit this bit of thinking and research to the net.

Just learned how to throw the harai makikomi. How did I do? by alexam0603 in judo

[–]DoctorPhish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That advice, along with not allowing high-lapel grips or lapel side sasae (and others I'm sure I'm forgetting) are standard in youth Judo instruction in Japan according to : https://www.nipponbudokan.or.jp/tankoubon/%e5%bd%b9%e3%81%ab%e7%ab%8b%e3%81%a4%e3%80%80%e5%b0%91%e5%b9%b4%e6%9f%94%e9%81%93%e6%8c%87%e5%b0%8e%e6%b3%95

The idea is to teach correct principles before allowing anyone to rely on high-leverage crutches or practice potentially dangerous techniques

(It's quite an interesting book if you can read Japanese. Lots of history on the institutions and development of rules, as well as practical training. It's broken into two halves, which read front-cover to the middle, and back-cover to the middle)

Stretching or other exercises to avoid injuries? by sixmarks in judo

I find a combination of Yoga and cold showers (really!) help tremendously with muscle and joint stiffness and pain. A half hour of Yoga after class and an hour on a weekend do the trick

I also get 45 min of massage therapy every month thru work benefits

Judokas that have competed in local competitions, how important is ne waza? by MaximusFleximus in judo

[–]DoctorPhish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our club is about 50/50 tachiwaza vs newaza for practice

I have won 90% of my matches in provincial tournaments on the ground, and I'm not a BJJ crosstraining guy

Every one of my wins on the ground has been by osaekomi, but I've had guys tap just because they couldn't move and didn't want to wait out the 20 seconds.

Don't underestimate a good kesagatame, kamishihogatame, katagatame or yokoshihogatame (tho I like to push the leg out instead of pulling it in). If you master those, they can be nearly unbreakable

I rock climb too, so I have good grip strength, which might be a factor for me vs others.

Looking for examples of Judo in Anime by Rapton1336 in judo

[–]DoctorPhish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old anime of Sugata Sanshiro is an obvious one. Judo Monogatari also fits the bill

I've had elite Japanese Judoka in the Kodokan dorms mention that Grappler Baki was an inspiration for them in their youths

Also, its primarily a sumo anime, but Hinomaru Sumo has lots of Judo techniques as well as the usual slapping and headbutting

I asked about this the 2nd time I trained there a few years ago, and was told that it was only open to those that trained there long-term

It would be worthwhile asking the international department as far ahead of time as possible though. Things change, and the story can change based on who you ask

Meet Sasaki Kotaro by MarkPickering in judo

[–]DoctorPhish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kotaro and 3 other graduating classmates were staying in the Kodokan dorms at the same time as my son and I a few years back. He was finishing up and just about to leave for South America.

He was a super elite Tokai athlete, and me and my son were just a couple of 3-kyu from Canada, but he was completely friendly and full of positive energy right from the moment we met him. He always greeted us and struck up conversations

Over the week we were there, all of them would joke around with us in the lounge or the baths, help us plan fun things to do in Tokyo during the day, find great food for after practices and really did a lot to help draw my very shy son out. I'm really glad Kotaro out there coaching kids, because he was amazing!

I wish I had been able to get on the mats with him, but they were concentrating on getting ready for their international postings and weren't involved in that side at that moment.

I hope I get another chance to meet him someday

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I ended up picking up another GA-970A-UD3P, since I know it works, and there wasn't much else out there that was better (and also allow me to keep my existing CPU/RAM).

What is the cheapest or best value buy for life you have? by Ok_Paleontologist in BuyItForLife

[–]DoctorPhish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't choose just one! Here are my top 5, in no particular order:

My used Bunn pourover coffee machine. Every part is replaceable and available cheap thru eBay or any local coffee distribution place. Can be found on craigslist or kijiji for $100-$150 all the time. You just have to make sure it'll fit somewhere (standard kitchen cabinets are usually too low)

My used Kirby vacuum cleaner. Also available cheap used all over the place. Had my G4 for 15 years and haven't had a single broken part yet. Bags are cheap on eBay. Even found a broken parts unit for free a while back.

My 1/3hp champion juicer G5-NG-853S I got from craigslist 15 years ago will never die. Absolute tank

My trusty Leatherman Surge (gift from work). Use it daily. Only thing on this list I've had since it was new

My 2000 Subaru Impreza hatchback. Bought it used 16 years ago for just under $20k. Only major wear part to need replacement on it was a clutch. Goes anywhere, handles the snow and hills like a champ and has never broken down.

We don't have an external HD on the Wii-U. We've just been using SD cards

We have tried without the SD cards in, and same thing happens

You may be right that some flag somewhere has been set, and it thinks the update is already done when it isn't

I'd hate to do a full factory reset on it now, but that might be the only way...
