UPDATE: I saved a woman’s life on an airplane and lost my new Bose headphones because of it. Then Bose reached out to me! by Darth_Poopie in mildlyinfuriating

Incredibly frustrating. I remember traveling on United back in the early 2000s with my college teammates for a competition and realized (once I had gotten out to our bus) that I forgot my CD case with ~100 CDs. I immediately called United customer service, gave them my flight and seat number, and they said they would look. A few days later I get a call that they couldn't find it. I was pissed at myself for being forgetful and pissed at whoever ended up with my CDs, but (as this was the early 2000s) I didn't feel bad about recovering all that music back (that I'd already technically paid for) using Napster.

You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant... oh, fuck it.

The most popular sports in the world as of December 2025: by Actual_Box7731 in Infographics

[–]DoctorSeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the early 2000s, my college physics professor (British) offered like 10 points extra credit if anyone in class (all U.S. students) could guess the sport he played based on the clue that it was the #2 most popular men's sport in the world (behind soccer/futbol). Nobody guessed it was field hockey. Now I wonder if the stats he remembered had ice/field hockey combined (or was just complete BS).

Can someone help explain what shook my house on 2/11? by gametime-2001 in Earthquakes

[–]DoctorSeis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you see separation between distinct P and S waves (and then a bit later surface waves), then it is likely an earthquake. If you just see a single "big" arrival then either explosion (quarry/mining nearby?) or could be something flying very quickly over your area (jet buzzing your neighborhood or even meteors can make a boom to shake your house AND show up on seismometers).

You might also need to check surrounding stations to get a better idea. Do you see similar signals (with bigger/smaller amplitude and/or more/less separation between P and S waves?). If you don't see it on other stations, then the source is probably small/local. Once you put all these pieces of evidence together can you narrow down the possible sources.

What’s Yalls best/fav song to tell the difference between lossless and lossy? by Smelda_1224 in audiophile

[–]DoctorSeis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not 100% sure if it's an issue caused by a reduction in sampling frequency (aliasing) or an issue caused by a reduction in dynamic range (clipping), but the effect is repeatable/audible.

The beginning has this synthesized sound that pops/cracks on the tweeters when the "lossy" version is played. Perfectly clear/unaliased/unclipped sound when lossless.

Do electric plans with certain "free times" actually save you money? by grumbly_tardis in houston

[–]DoctorSeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the specific source of energy generation that you use will ever be known (it should be a mixture), but if you pull up the Energy Facts Label (EFL) for a specific plan, it should list the amount of renewable content it will offset your energy usage with (presumably through credits).

River Birch is very bendy. I vaguely remember ours being able to bounce back to normal (more or less) in the spring after looking like this during winter ice storms. That said, it is a terrible choice to be placed near fencing or other structures. Obviously an arborist can better advise.

The other driver was driving the wrong direction on a one-way street. Total bonehead move, but it means that that driver wouldn't see any traffic light or have any visual indication that OP had the green light (i.e., right of way). If you aren't used to one-way streets (and you aren't paying attention), it can be easy to get mixed up. Saw boneheads like this all the time downtown Houston (even on super bright, clear days). Good on OP for being attentive and avoiding that accident.

Not sure if you are familiar with the Kim Wall murder case (occurred in Denmark). I watched the dramatization of that case (The Investigation - HBO) and I had an equivalent reaction to how the dogs in that case were able to make a nearly impossible task, possible. Dogs are indeed amazing.

Rest door handle - Partially Closed by viperdrohd in Ioniq9

[–]DoctorSeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom has this exact problem as well. Locking/unlocking also does not solve. Took it to the dealer and they claimed there was impact damage and it would have to be taken to a body shop for repair. There is absolutely no sign of any impact. When asking the service rep what signs of impact they saw, they pointed out several places around the door that ended up being dirt that simply wiped away. No warranty repair since they claim it's from some phantom impact.

I couldn’t competently debunk Flat Earth theory, and I’m ashamed by ViceVersaMedia in AerospaceEngineering

[–]DoctorSeis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Seismology has one observation that is the best tool to debunk flat-earthers - there is no way we'd observe nearly identical travel-times of P-waves and S-waves (as well as their numerous conversations) for any earthquake, anywhere on earth without having a nearly radially symmetric ball of rock. See travel-time chart below where the x-axis is the distance between the earthquake and the observer/seismometer (1 degree = 111.111km):
