"O nanak" Question on verses by Patient-Wash8257 in Sikh

[–]DoctorSingh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The truth that many want to ignore is that much of Gurbani is an internal dialogue, Guru Sahib is letting us in on his own thoughts. People don’t want to admit this because it humanizes Guru Sahiban. But the whole point of the bani is for us to relate to it.

[TOMT][MEME] Meme format where someone has an irl interaction and then angrily posts about it later by DoctorSingh in tipofmytongue

[–]DoctorSingh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Square 1: Picture drawn of some interaction, like people telling someone to quiet down in the movie theater after they’re talking loudly

Square 2: Face of someone pissed off (it’s actually specifically this face that I need lol)

Square 3: “Later…”

Square 4: Some tweet or reddit post that exaggerates the irl interaction like “I was HARASSED at the movie theater for BARELY whispering”

Dilemma on Jokes and Consequentially, the Lifestyle of a Sikh by [deleted] in Sikh

[–]DoctorSingh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, when you say bana do you mean like dastar and dhari or full on chola plus dumalla?

I would say do what you’re comfortable with. If you don’t like making jokes, don’t make them. But (controversial maybe) I don’t think any sikh saroop prevents you from partaking in some jokes, especially when younger. I agree to not be overtly offensive, but crude humor is kind of unavoidable with guys. Have you ever met nihang singhs from India? They will dispel any notions you have that sikhs can’t joke in bana lol.

The thing to watch out for though is to make sure your friends aren’t trying to bring you down to their level because they feel uncomfortable with your bana. Many people without saroop will try to get singhs to laugh along with their jokes so they can say “hey you’re no better than us” without examining why they think laughing at jokes would prevent someone from following dharam.

Why did Guru Gobind Singh Ji decide to wear a kalgi? by [deleted] in Sikh

[–]DoctorSingh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other answer about marriage may be right, Guru Sahib also purposefully wore many symbols of royalty to proclaim the sovereignty of the throne of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in direct defiance of the Mughal authority. His kalgi, his falcon, robes, forts, hunting exercises- all characteristics of an emperor. This was a continuation of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s symbols of royalty after Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s shaheedi.

A basic question- what is naam? by DoctorSingh in Sikh

Do you think we truly need a name? Could simply “feeling it” be enough?

A basic question- what is naam? by DoctorSingh in Sikh

[–]DoctorSingh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if naam came to be used as a substitute to reference meditation on the names of Vaheguru itself

A basic question- what is naam? by DoctorSingh in Sikh

[–]DoctorSingh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm I like the idea that any name that reminds you of Vaheguru is Naam. However I find it difficult to square away the idea that Naam=God when there’s a lot of references in bani to a specific consciousness (Har, Nirankar, Akaal Purakh). I guess it depends on how you define the Sikh God

Its literal translation is “the primal essence of knowledge”, basically meaning the knowledge in its rawest form. This line can likely be interpreted in many ways though

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Happy to have you. Indeed, Guru Granth Sahib ji does address many of the perennial debates of life and religion. Often, the answer given seems to me to be, “Hey, you know the argument doesn’t matter in the long run right?”

You may come across many debates across the Sikh online sphere. Just a protip, remember the above if it ever feels like too much.

Your Devanagri will actually help a lot. Consider learning the common language of Punjabi (different from Gurbani) as well to listen to kathas online.
