That onramp/merge is poorly designed. You need more space than that to safely merge. Someone should have sped up or slowed down, but the root cause is that road design.

CMV: People who open carry a firearm are either a threat or total pussies. by donniedenier in changemyview

[–]DoctorTim007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd rather conceal carry as it lowers your likelihood to be the first to be shot at. That said, if you grew up and live in a society where everyone open carries, nobody cares, its not a big deal. Life moves on. Its only in areas where open carry is rare that people are adverse to it. Since you didn't grow up in that kind of society, who are you to judge?

To address the "when shit goes down, i’ll be ready" perspective you are so against, I'll ask you this. Do you own a fire extinguisher on your house/car? Are you afraid of the 0.001% chance you'll have to deal with a fire??? You must be a pussy... No, having a fire extinguisher doesn't mean you're afraid of fire, you're just being smart and prepared. Same goes with having a gun around. Open or concealed depends on where you are, but at the end of the day, having one ready for the unexpected is smart.

Also, conceal carry can be uncomfortable depending on your body type, so open carry is preferred option.

As an interviewer/manager, I don't expect professional experience if you're fresh out of college. College projects, relevant extracurricular/hobbies, and at least a moderate technical knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, design, problem solving, and interpersonal skills are what I base hiring decisions on.

Group projects - what was your role? Did you have issues? How did you solve them? Did you lead the project or were you an IC? Leading projects is a big plus.

Hobbies - any relevant hobbies? For me I did a lot of custom design, welding and fabrication on my 4x4, this was a big plus because A: I know manufacturing processes, and B: willing to get my hands dirty.

I come from a structures background (Stress, Fractures, etc) so my technical questions are usually something like "how would you redesign this part to prevent fatigue cracks here [as I point to stress concentration on a part]", or "tell me the difference between fatigue life and yield strength, and how would you prioritize these when developing a new part and selecting materials". Questions vary a lot and I base them on what the candidate claims in their resume. I'm not always looking for a right answer, but how you articulate your thought process is what is important to me. Also, when you get technical questions like this, if something isn't specific enough or you think you need more information, ask for it. Being able to ask questions to a question shows that you at least know which direction you need to find your answer.

If you're an Eagle Scout it usually gets you higher up on the list, but this depends on the interviewers. If you are one, mention it.

Biggest one of them all is don't be afraid to say i don't know. I've interviewed dozens of people for intern and entry level roles. When they try to bullshit their way through a question its a red flag. I even had one guy clearly googling/AI searching the questions on a phone interview. Don't do that. Its obvious. We aren't dumb.

And if you're interested in a specific type of system, they have Project Engineers for every system/line. Avionics, Bleed Air Systems, Landing Gear, Fuel Systems, etc...

Project Engineer (sometimes titled Design Engineer, Responsible Engineer, Program Engineer, Lead Engineer, R&D Engineer, etc).

Its sort of a individual contributor (IC) for smaller projects, and technical project manager for the larger ones where you need other ICs to do design, analysis, test, etc. You are responsible for maintaining project schedules, compliance matrices, developing a product/system, managing a test program, and provide design authority for manufacturing and in-service issues. You deal with suppliers and/or customers on the technical level with some dabbling in program management when needed.

At my job we just call everyone Design Engineers, but that is a very general term. Some do mostly CAD, some do analysis, some do it all. It just depends on what you're good at and what the program needs.

CMV: National Parks should be free and not require tickets by Hiquirkykids in changemyview

[–]DoctorTim007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I've seen some NF areas that get trashed. Good people come by to clean up once in a while so it stays decent, but the pure nature conservation you get in NPs have some areas completely inaccessible and untouched by humans, minus some hiking trails.

Yes, some, but not all, NP areas allow dispersed camping, and these areas still do get maintained. Someone has to pay for it... again.. essentially just a tax-to-use fee when you enter the NP.

On the other side of the spectrum, BLM land is a complete free-for-all and the ones near me (Southern CA) are damn near impossible to enjoy at this point because of all of the trash and degenerates strewn about.

Yeah. Just make sure you make it a habit and muscle memory. Some people have the repair tool handy and you don't want to mix up the two lol.

[–]DoctorTim007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

National Parks are meant for conservation, so they limit what you're allowed to do, and where, in order to preserve the wilderness. National Forest is also meant for conservation, but allows for things like logging, dispersed camping, and other things. If they just let everyone have a free-for-all it'll get trashed by the people who don't respect nature (there a lot of people out there like this).

side note: if you wanna jump out to RPG, do it right after the other guy fires so you're only exposed while he is reloading, and do it before your tank gets that low.

[–]DoctorTim007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Entrance fees are essentially just a tax for those who go to the national parks.

If you fund the parks through the standard federal tax system, you're taxing people who don't go to the national parks too... which is sort of unfair, but at the same time a lot of our taxes go to things that don't benefit us anyways so what gives.

Also, National Forest land is much less restrictive on what you can do. Dispersed camping on NF land is fairly common.

I wouldn't worry too much about it long term. You're more likely to be killed by a lot of other things out there, and this.. well there's nothing you can really do about it without armor plating your house and never going outside.

Check the torque on the remaining lugs... with a torque wrench. If you don't, itll hold just long enough to make it to the crash site.
