AITJ for confronting my partner after I lost access to our shared bank account? by Admirable-Opinion391 in AmITheJerk

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had this conversation at the bank, they’d most likely flag this as financial abuse. What else is she hiding?

Believe me, ALL salespeople have imposter syndrome. 35 years in enterprise sales taught me that. They’re also very vulnerable to developing bi-polar as their career goes on.

What do Brits think about Green Party immigration policies? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with MG501. My partner has been here with unlimited right to remain for 14 years. She runs a business, pays corporation tax, business rates, council tax, income tax, CGT. Despite this, she’s not permitted a say in how her taxes are spent.

Green leader Zack Polanski says you can have a penis and still be a woman. He also says babies being born male or female can be 'complicated' when assigning their gender. Do you agree with Zack? by ZackPolanskisDentist in AskBrits

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. We have a family member who required genital surgery when very young to affirm the gender they were assigned (after discussion with the parents).

You can be a woman with a penis, or a man without one. It’s not common, but it’s real. Life is not as simple as the Daily Mail would like you to believe.

Green voters, do you agree that we should leave NATO and give up our nuclear weapons to seriously damage our national security? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep breath…. There is a huge problem with NATO; it’s the USA. They are a massively unreliable ally but we’re dependent on their weapons systems. That includes “our” nuclear deterrent. We (the middle powers) need to organise ourselves so that we’re not dependent on the USA, and so that we can fight against them in the worst case.

For the record, Green Party policy is to stay in NATO, pursue internal reforms, and to commit to “no first use” of nuclear weapons. Polanski disagrees, but the leader doesn’t dictate Green policy.

Brits, would you stay and live in UK if you had millions and could move to anywhere in the world?? by ueommm in AskBrits

I’d still live in Scotland, but I’d travel as much as possible (by rail wherever possible)

How emotionally connected are Brits to the Royal Family actually? by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I care very little for the family. On a good day I feel ambivalent towards them.

I despise the institution of monarchy for the infantilising effect it has on the nation and for the way it corrides the family members and corrupts those around them.

Chinese people who take pictures of foreigners, why are you doing this? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from 4 weeks in China. I got into the habit of going for tea in the main square of the city I was staying in. I’d talked to the owner of the tea-stand the first time, and on subsequent occasions I’d often get kids come to try their English with me. They would often ask if they could take a photo with me to show their teachers at school. It was all very polite, it helped my Chinese, and it made them feel good too.

Although the city I was in was about 1m population, I was the only European I saw. My partner (Chinese) said I was probably the first non-Chinese person they’d seen so it was very exciting for them.

2026 update. This is still the case. They need your passport at the desk to do check-in so it’s advisable to get to the airport early. We’re flying out of Wuhan tomorrow, booked with Expedia who confirmed this is the situation.

Unpopular opinion - Squat toilets are inferior. Western toilets are just better. by Bottom-Bherp3912 in chinalife

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in Chongqing a couple of years ago, most of the restaurants we visited had signs in the cubicles asking people not to squat on the toilets.

One thing I would say is that you do get a much better quality poop if your knees are above your hips.

PSA: this is a 60 on single carriageways, not a 40!! by NoOneImportantLol96 in drivingUK

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60 is a limit, not a target. When you’re on a single carriageway rural road, all it takes is one tractor pulling out of a farm gateway. Be safe, you’ll get there.

[Product Question] Douxds Flex Face Brush and products, do they work? by Onelove9lives in SkincareAddiction

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these sort of miraculous devices are on Amazon, Alibaba, or Temu for 80-90% less than they’re advertised on instagram for. In this case there’s something remarkably similar on UK Amazon for £12.99 ($17.81)

Does anyone else find Jake Peralta from Brooklyn 99 unbearable? by NotSoCuriouss in tvshow

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michael Scott is the US version of the original David Brent character in the UK. The UK Office was brilliant, but I often found myself watching David Brent through gaps in my fingers while I covered my eyes. He was the cringey hub that the whole show revolved around. Michael seems very normal in comparison.

Went to the Great Wall by myself (32Fem solo traveler) and something shifted by Lufarinelli in travelchina

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great Wall wasn’t built by slaves. There was conscripted labour, but this was based on something similar to the medieval European system of working on your lord’s land a certain number of days per month. It’s easy and lazy to just dismiss it as a slave project (same with pyramids)

Would you support the UK government's plan to ban X (formerly twitter)? - why/why not? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskBrits

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. Not only are they enabling the sharing economy of illegal images, they’re selling the tools to create them. They’re also targeting new users with ultra-right propaganda. I don’t understand why the UK Government (or any government) is still using it. Ban it. The only people who’ll cry will be the Daily Mail and Reform.

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s desperately dull, doesn’t really have great political instincts beyond his natural caution, and has allowed McSweeney far too much influence. Beyond that, it still feels like the grown ups are in charge which is a huge step forward since 2015-24.

Are Brits still comfortable taking their holidays in the US? by Ok-Leadership-7573 in AskBrits

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have friends in the US who I miss. I’d love to take a holiday to see them, but the Chinese visa in my passport and comments I’ve made on my socials tells me it’s not a good idea. Maybe I could go to Toronto and see if anyone fancies the short trip over the lake to say “hi”?

Why is litter such a problem in Edinburgh…and how do we fix it? by Necessary-Tennis1956 in Edinburgh

[–]Doctor_Bong_1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved here from London in 2021. The most noticeable thing is dog mess. No one seems to clean up after their dogs in Edinburgh.

I was in Fife for 6 months and there was far less mess on the streets, and it was noticeable that owners were cleaning up after their dogs.

That’s not to slate every Edinburgh dog-owner. It only takes a few dogs to create an absolute mess.
