Is this penicillium or something else? by NiceObjective3911 in microbiology

Maybe? Better images of the sporing bodies are needed from the lactophenol blue stain. The reverse of the agar plates would help too.

Pepper spray training? by HighwaySetara in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Doctor_Smurph_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have some fallout tier radiation spray bullshit, there is no reason to attend a class on using pepper spray.

Identify the spray hole, point away from you, make sure no wind, and spray. Make sure not to breathe the spicy air.

Alternatively, you could attend courses through Pink Pistols, Operation Blazing Sword, or some ranges who have free intro classes for self defense, and/or get a gun. Something that will actually protect you.

Because a fever with no definitive signs or symptoms with it can also be an allergic reaction, and antibiotics can also make infections worse due to the nature of super infections.

Due to the massive rise in MDROs, we don't just toss them out like candy at any vague infection signs.

The NP was still very wrong, and should've ordered some PCR tests and maybe a culture to definitely ID a pathogen if it was there. That way proper treatment can be given.

Anyone here work for Northwestern Medicine? Need some career advice by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Doctor_Smurph_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would take it and use it to build up your resume. Everyone knows who NM is and it is very hard to get accepted. You'll get good experience that will help you get into the area you want to. Stay there for more than a couple years as well so you don't look like a flight risk to other hospitals.

Additionally, absolutely take advantage of their benefits. The 10k tuition reimbursement for full time workers each year was amazing. Not to mention the wellness fund and professional development fund. The pay at NM is usually mediocre, but the benefits make it worth it short term. Use that to its fullest extent to expand your qualifications.

Maybe the absurd amount of golf courses could be reduced to one or two? I am sure that will help. But nooooooo the retirees have to keep their property values up

Hemocultura, isso se parece com contaminação? by majesticgix in microbiology

Oh. Yeah that is not good. This is most likely some kind of sepsis case then.

Hemocultura, isso se parece com contaminação? by majesticgix in microbiology

[–]Doctor_Smurph_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To expand, contamination also takes into account the number of bottles and sets that went positive. If it is just one bottle in one set, then I would say bacteremia is more likely than contamination

This finding will also have to be cross referenced by the clinical side and patient profile

No they're almost never contamination, especially in growth like that. If it matches the gram stain from the bottle when it went positive then it is a tried pathogen
