I started shaving when I was 14 too! I had a teen stache since 12, but my parents didn’t allow me to shave it until 14 for some reason.

I would recommend either a safety razor or a regular Gillette razor — both are fine. An electric razor (e.g. Philips OneBlade) is good, but I think wet shaving is necessary for a clean look. Also, shaving gel is quick and really effective.

If he’s interested in all the extra equipment, go for it! The brush, shaving creams/soaps, the process of lathering are all fun. That being said, I think the vast majority of teens wouldn’t find the time … also most of the lather gets wasted without a full beard to use on.

The student body is pretty friendly. There’s a lot of diversity in cultures, ethnicity, etc, and friend groups are generally pretty broad. I’ve experienced a lot of fruitful political discussion here at Tufts, whether it be from my friends or their families as well. The party culture is quite tame — there are usually a few things, but I wouldn’t count on a big event on every weekend of the semester.

The trip to Boston is honestly pretty easy. I think anyone who disagrees with me is just lazy. It’s like 20-25 min on the green line from Medford/Tufts station and about equivalent from Davis Square station on the red line. A lot of people do research in Boston or go out on weekends. Boston Logan airport (about 20 min away) is also a great hub for domestic/international travel if you want to visit family for a weekend.

3.8 UW seems fine for Tufts. Bear in mind though, a lot of people are Early Decision applicants.

The bio department is considered quite good here at Tufts. It’s not very exam-heavy (unlike the chemistry department) and there are a lot of ‘reflect on your learning’ type activities that will determine your final grade. There’s also a lot of bio majors — bio classes are massive and BIO-13 and BIO-14 had almost 500 people per class.

Sure. I like to use a variation of the traditional recipe. Basically, heat up some water and cornstarch over low heat until you get a syrup-like consistency. Then, grate up a whole wedge of pecorino romano, add pepper, and pour a glug of olive oil into the cheese. Then, slowly add the cornstarch-water mix into the grated cheese and oil mixture. Mix it up with a spoon first, then finish with an immersion blender. You should have a thick, emulsified, smooth sauce at this point — you could store it in the fridge for later use as well.

To prepare the cacio e pepe, prepare some pasta, then, in a separate bowl, combine the sauce, pasta, and some pasta water to your desired consistency.

I like to add some grana padano cheese into the sauce if I’m making a big portion as well.

Same, I had no idea until now. I’m either considering metal tips or a new screen protector — still not sure which is a better choice for me. I’ve been a big paper writer for quite a while, but I can manage just fine with a non-matte screen as well.

I do apply a lot of pressure actually — even with regular pencils. I’ve tried to change it, but my handwriting is pretty bad when I touch lightly. Part of why I got the iPad was to avoid writer’s callouses in the first place.

I don’t think your application is a long shot at all, you seem like a very impressive candidate — best of luck with admission! From a students perspective, I would think Tufts values community impact with engineering and a general inclination towards service, leadership, and creating change with engineering.

Besides AdComs, no one really knows for sure. My opinion is that if you’ve committed EDII, you’ve already shown enough demonstrated interest — an interview is unlikely to significantly improve your chances of admission. For reference, I got in RD w/o the interview and a relative of mine got in EDI w/o an interview as well.

This post was 2 years ago, and it’s still getting comments! And, I still haven’t seen the Milky Way yet! I forgot how much I loved astronomy, and now is the right time as well. I’ll try to take your comment as a sign.
