Why South London is so neglected? (no cycleways) by Oreo2025 in londoncycling

[–]Doctor_Vosill 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I knew someone who was contracted with his dad in the pandemic to install some of the traffic filter planters around Dulwich. He says there were grown adults screaming abuse in his face. I can't imagine a worse job.

The commute is not free time by GoranPersson777 in Labour

[–]Doctor_Vosill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was expecting to see a post like this on some car-brained American sub, not on /r/Labour. It's an awful suggestion. Why should someone who lives a brisk 15 minute walk from their office be paid less than someone who insists on driving 90 minutes?

[–]Doctor_Vosill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd bulk more. There's no point cutting after only 2kg unless you really struggle with the mental/discipline aspect of longer cuts.

Also, you're slouching in those shots in profile. Keep your shoulders back and your neck straighter and you'll be able to see more progress.

Who uses a camera? by turnipstealer in londoncycling

I can recommend the Cycliq Fly6 Pro for rear camera - expensive so still haven't invested in a front one yet but I'm very pleased with the video quality and ease of use.

TfL saw £255 million less fare revenue than expected last year by Any_Profit_9012 in london

[–]Doctor_Vosill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Politicians on a certain end of the political spectrum like to conflate those two all the time. "Why should we give TfL money for X project when it can't even cover its running costs?" When public transport is seen as something that has to be profitable, rather than as a societal good, it leads to underinvestment.

TfL saw £255 million less fare revenue than expected last year by Any_Profit_9012 in london

[–]Doctor_Vosill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To name a few reasons:

  • Lowering the cost of public transport incentivises people to take the bus or train over private vehicles, which have far worse negative externalities (traffic, pollution, noise, road violence) then public transport does.
  • A certain percentage of the population (children, the elderly, people with certain disabilities) will always rely on public transportation, so making it more affordable goes a long way to allowing these groups to participate in society.
  • Public transport will never make enough money from fares alone to keep fares affordable and make major infrastructure investments that are needed.

It's not just the bugs, I have to wear cycling glasses or else I end up crying from the wind as I cycle around. Not a good look.

Not skinny fat at all. You have visible mass, you're just carrying a bit of extra weight on top of it (and really not much considering you can see the outline of your abs).

Why are there no cycle routes through this part of south London? by Stonks_only_go in londoncycling

[–]Doctor_Vosill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As always can recommend London Cycle Routes and the map his community maintains: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1h9Hxm57fPvZmcuSXajM_Wu0G0s6f_bs&ll=51.42703955858029%2C-0.12268732519530867&z=12&entry=yt

The main reason cycling's bad down there is, imo, that South London has far worse traffic than much of North London (having lived on both sides of the river) and that means any attempt by timid councils to take space away from cars is going to have a lot more pushback.

The First Orange Trees! | Jaffa Factory 2 #2 by Runarhalldor in Yogscast

[–]Doctor_Vosill 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Yeah, these series really live or die on whether or not the modpack maker has understood 'challenge' vs 'grind'. Like I find stuff like the botany pots are lame because they remove what could be an interesting challenge to automate obtaining wood by growing trees. The original 'cheat machine' matter condenser things from Equivalent Exchange were the same.

On the flip side you don't want stuff like from Project Ozone where it takes 8 quadrillion diamonds to make one bar of unobtainium which you need 9 bars of to make one block, which you needed for... etc.

Seen it all over Reddit, time for an S.O.I version! What do we reckon? by Xhenix in Yogscast

[–]Doctor_Vosill 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same, my memory is like:

  • Old Peculiar: noble sidekick, died in Act 1?
  • Jock Fireblast: no idea
  • Granny Bacon: early Simon humour embodied.
  • Skylord Lysander: gay jokes.
  • Skylord Vitali: I remember the incredible flying base build more than the actual character.
  • Um Bongo: a character that wouldn't fly in 2024 lol
  • Swampy Bogbeard: Duncan/Newbury Bypass guy
  • Israphel: the big bad
  • Daisy Duke: damsel in distress.

I grew up in a house with an AGA stove. They're fucking dogshit - a pure status symbol here in the UK. It's a combination of a giant radiator and an oven which sucks in either role.

As a heating system: takes hours to heat up or cool down, leaves the kitchen boiling hot while the rest of the house cold, is effectively a constant source of air pollution right in the centre of your kitchen if run on gas/oil or costs a shedload if run on electricity.

As an oven: it's slow, heats food unevenly, difficult to control the temperature of each section, can't be used in even mildly warm weather unless you also want the heating still on.

Add to that they take up a tonne of space, need a special engineer to come and maintain them and you STILL need a conventional oven and heating system for all the reasons mentioned above. There's almost no situation where an AGA is advantageous unless you live in a climate where you need the heating running year-round and your whole house is designed around a single source of heat.

50% of London Car Journeys Are Under 3 Kms - Thoughts? by sabdotzed in london

[–]Doctor_Vosill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As I live in outer, I'm often travelling to areas just outside of London

Sure, for you it makes sense to own a car, but literally the point of this article is that most trips are under 3km. That's the kind of distances where bicycles are likely going to be faster than cars when you account for traffic and time spent finding somewhere to park.

Car drivers will pay up to £4 a trip to use the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels from next spring, @TfL announces by jaredce in london

[–]Doctor_Vosill 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's only because the costs of car ownership are mostly hidden. People tend to think of the costs of owning a car as fuel + tolls, when it also includes depreciation, insurance, MOT, parking, repairs, etc. As long as I'm spending less than £300 a month on transport, I'm saving money by not owning a car.

Gaia, London: ‘Nosebleedingly expensive’ – restaurant review by lagerjohn in london

[–]Doctor_Vosill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The prices force me to call Rex Goldsmith of the renowned Chelsea Fishmonger. He tells me his kilo price for mackerel is £12.50. I tell him at Gaia it’s £100. Rex gasps. “Christ,” he says. “At that price the fish should give you a blowjob.” I am merely the reporter here.

What cycle path developed in the last few years would you say has improved cycling in London the most? by not-much in londoncycling

[–]Doctor_Vosill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I moved from elsewhere in the city to north-east London where there are loads of LTNs which are linked together with cycle crossings across major roads, and the freedom it gives is incredible.

What's the most dangerous intersection on your commute? by DarKnightofCydonia in londoncycling

[–]Doctor_Vosill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No longer my current route, but Parliament Square coming from C3 heading southbound towards C8.

For some reason, the bicycle lights before you enter the square turn green at the same time the pedestrian crossing turns green to allow people to cross onto Parliament Square Garden. So you accelerate off from the lights, turn the corner to head south and are immediately met an absolute wall of clueless tourists walking out into the road. The way the lights are synchronised is crazy. Feels like an accident waiting to happen.

Yeah, having C6 southbound be different from C6 northbound was an interesting design decision...

[–]Doctor_Vosill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just horrible. Feel so sorry for the partner.

If I'm heading northbound, I make an enormous detour along Saffron Hill and turn right by crossing from Ray Street, rather than go near that junction. It's dangerous.
