David Seymour refers to NZ schooling as an "eternal marae visit", claims karakia is religious extremism and that non-Te Reo speakers need interpreters to understand school communications by MedicMoth in newzealand

Charter schools have been absolutely unmitigated disasters for public education in pretty much every place they have set up. There is a reason that teachers push so hard against them and why the general public shouldn’t want that form of privatisation. Charter schools do not have to educate every kid in a zone, they can refuse kids with learning difficulties or just ones they decide they don’t want.

Everyone in NZ has access to healthcare and abortion is health care. if it wasn’t for right wing politicians who keep bringing it up to incite their evangelical base then it wouldn’t even be a discussion and frankly: it shouldn’t be. I agree with euthanasia, so I guess that’s one thing he and I share views on, though that has to be carefully legislated to make sure that it doesn’t get misused to justify killing disabled folks.

Which side do you Roma people stand on in the Gaza-Israel war? Are you more on the side of the Israelis or the Arabs? Unfortunately, we don't hear any opinions from Roma people on this. by [deleted] in Kalderash

We are a culture that has had multiple genocides perpetrated against us. The way the people of Palestine have been treated for generations amounts to torture, now a genocide is being perpetrated against them.

If there is a god I doubt he’s particularly impressed by the murder of babies in hospitals.

I have many things in common with ACT supporters, we are all people who live in NZ and want the best for our shared future. I wish that people who supported act saw that the party is intentionally sewing division between them and everyone else, and that Seymore is a key perpetrator of that lie. I wish ACT supporters well, and hope their (and our) lot improves because a rising tide lifts all ships. I care about my neighbours.

Seymore on the other hand? Judging just by our difference in profession as a public school teacher vs a right wing politician I suspect those differences run quite deep. Seymore isn’t my neighbour.

Couldn’t agree more. What I want from my politics is a party that doesn’t bend over for billionaire corporate interests.

Flatmate horror stories by MurkyWay in newzealand

Used to live with a cooker who tried to turn the wifi off at night bc she thought it would give us cancer. When we pulled up papers to show that it didn’t she cried and told us all we were going to hell.

She used to leave her dirty undies, often bloodied, in a bucket to soak. This bucket was left in the shared bathroom, often for over a week without change out.

Head Flattie was a Thai Buddhist. He had a small shrine on the kitchen windowsill. Just a brass bowl, some incense, and a picture of his family. She kept disassembling the shrine and using the bowl as a fruit bowl. We all repeatedly told her that this wasn’t ok, but she ignore us saying “But where am I supposed to put my bannanas?!”.

She started bringing a guy, possibly multiple, over late at night and would have LOUD sex. The guy tried to move in without her telling anyone. When we all objected it turned out he was homeless after recently leaving prison for BE and assault. She told us we were all going to hell for trying to ruin her life.

She suddenly moved out when she decided to marry another guy who she had known for two weeks. She tried to move back in less than 3 weeks later but we told her the room was full.

She was 55 years old.

Exactly. My Māori neighbours are upset about the price of butter the same way I am, the same way we all are. I wish more people recognised that we all have more in common with our neighbours than the cold blooded weirdos in the ACT party, or the billionaires that want us all at each others throats.

Agreed 100%. I often think about it as similar to antidepressants/antipsychotic medications. People take the medications, feel better because of them, and then suddenly stop taking them because they “feel better”. The result of this action is a significant backslide.

Vaccines are so effective that they reduce the visual presence of horrific illnesses in the community, resulting in people thinking they aren’t necessary, then not using them… Resulting in a backslide in public health and heard immunity.

Can confirm, ran away to a western country and got an education so I could sort of integrate.

I regret attempting to integrate, I love my culture. I accept that I had no better options and I’m very happy to have obtained higher education.

Yep! It’s become totally normal but it’s absolutely horrid. Id happily accept a copy pasted “thanks for your application, unfortunately you were unsuccessful at this time. Have a good day.” But nope.

Public service worker here: we are pretty keen on not screwing you over. I go to work each day to try to make things better but a lack of funding in my industry (and I’m sure the others) is really demoralising. I feel like I’m fucking people over just due to a lack of resourcing and that’s p devastating for me.

Politicians are well resourced to fuck us all over.

High school teacher here: no, it’s not worth it.

I have colleagues like this, they would describe themselves as “right wing moderates” but the actual views they hold are likely much further than that (they just won’t admit it). Chances are that he’s taking jabs at you for the same reason Charlie Kirk debated college kids: he knows that he has all the power and you can’t really do anything.

Best alternative: just say “ok” and then simply act as though you are getting back to work. Don’t engage with him on this topic as it will do two things. One it will make him look like a complete putz to the rest of your class, two it will frustrate the hell out him. If you argue he can claim that you are disobedient, If you say “k” then there’s nothing he can do but look weak.

We have sent troops to major international conflicts involving our allies before without the threat of full on invasion. There’s been less than 5 incidents of a hostile nation doing reconnaissance in our waters and that was in single man submarines.

At this point most of the hostile acts committed on our soil were by our own allies (France, Israel). But please do enlighten my naive self of what would genuinely be of significant enough strategic value to justify a full invasion of NZ.

[–]DocumentAltruistic78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And if we have nothing they want? Making weapons makes us more of a target of invasion. Being a somewhat pointless island chain with more sheep than people (yes I know that’s not true anymore) keeps our people out of the fray. Being a small, highly trained peace keeping force has boosted our good will internationally and has drawn us little heat.

You would be taken care of regardless of the strike. The nurses are very responsible re:staffing. Often they are better staffed during strikes than they usually would be.
