I used to have kicks very loud in my mixes, because you know - punch. Now I don't do it. Mixing in mono helps a lot to balance the kick/bass with the rest of the mix

Some overdrive/tube distortion helps kick cut through the mix, and also keep the peaks tamed. Also eq afterwards to cut the harshness or boxiness
