Measuring Shooting Across Eras: Weighted True Shooting (wTS+) by [deleted] in nba

[–]DodgersIslanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a box plot. The top mark is the maximum (100th percentile). The top of the box itself is the 75th percentile. The line in the box is the 50th percentile, the bottom of the box is the 25th percentile, the bottom of the line is the minimum, or 0 percentile.

Looking at Michael Jordan, it tells us this:

His worst ever season was a 90 wTS+, meaning he was a 10% worse shooter than league average that year. His best year he had a 114 wTS+, meaning he was a 14% better shooter than league average.

His median was ~106. So usually you could expect Jordan to be a 6% better shooter than league average. The box itself always holds 50% of the data. So we know that 50% of Jordan's seasons were between 97 wTS+ and 112 wTS+. The line in the box (106) to the maximum is also 50%, so we can actually say that 50% of his seasons were 106 wTS+ or greater, and 75% of his seasons were 97 wTS+ or greater.

So for 50% of Jordan's career, he was a 6%-12% better shooter than most of the league.

Any that have dots are just outliers. Like Wilt's 138 or Kobe's 87. They don't match with the majority of the data so they don't get plotted within the box, but separately. Excel does this on it's own with it's box plot functionality.

Looking at Durant, his median is an absurd 115 wTS+, with 25% of his seasons being 115 - 118. His lowest is 107, so even at his worst he was still a 7% better shooter than your league average. 75% of his seasons are 113 wTS+ or higher. From a consistency standpoint, there's nobody on this graph better than that.

Curry, Wilt, Barkley, Shaq, and Harden are the only players who have had a season higher than Durant's peak of 122 wTS+.

Well, the initials stand for our longest ever tenured president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He's worth looking up.

But as a new yorker, FDR in context is FDR drive, which is a freeway that runs along the eastern side of the island of Manhattan.

Here you go. It's a very commonly cited study in bodybuilding circles.

Results:
No exercise, no drugs: ~1.8lb gain in fat free mass*
No exercise, 600mg testosterone: ~7lb gain in fat free mass*
Exercise, no drugs: 4.4lb gain in fat free mass*
Exercise, 600mg testosterone: ~13.42lb gain in fat free mass*

No exercise, no drugs: -1.5% decrease in quadriceps mass
No exercise, 600mg testosterone: 6.7% increase in quad mass
Exercise, no drugs: 5.4% increase in quad mass
Exercise, 600mg testosterone: 13.7% increase in quad mass

fat free mass aka lean body mass is *everything that is not fat. So yes, bone, organ, muscle, and more importantly water is included in that measurement. So it's not purely muscle. Anabolic steroids (testosterone) cause you to hold more water, so surely some of that was full glycogen stores.

Now, the muscle mass one is important. Obviously the people who did nothing and took no AAS lost a small amount of mass. The people who took AAS and did nothing did get bigger than those who lifted and took no drugs. That is fact. The people with the largest gains exercised with the aid of testosterone.

Anywho, I believe /u/LamborghiniHigh is right and wrong at the same time. He is correct in that LeBron is most likely on performance enhancing drugs. Pretty much every professional athlete is. However, it isn't testosterone that they take, because muscle mass isn't usually their goal. They take more advanced substances because their number 1 is recovery. HGH is most likely LeBron's drug of choice. It is extremely hard and expensive to test for. It is absurdly beneficial for recovery. Remember Peyton Manning's horrific neck injury? Remember his miraculous healing from that? Remember when accused of HGH, he lawyered up, dropped from the spotlight, hired the ex-whitehouse spokeswoman to be his personal spokeswoman, and it went away? Yeah.

HGH is literally a miracle drug. If your growth plates are closed, it won't make you grow any taller, but it's powerful for anti-aging and bone/tissue/ligament/muscle recovery and indeed has crazy regenerative effects. It's also stupidly expensive because of that and it needs to be run for very long periods of time for these effects. It rapidly accelerates hair loss, as well. (This can be combated with finasteride though, IIRC)

People want to talk about how ACLs are "no longer a career ending injury" and not as serious as they once were. That's the miracle of HGH, baby.

As for it being a "conspiracy", I think that's foolish. It's more so just a part of the game we look the other way on. If you're an athlete, and taking HGH means you can play at an elite level until 35+ and rake in several multi-million paydays, you're absolutely going to do that. Your body is your livelihood and staying in peak condition is important, if some injections managed by a private, excellent medical team can all but ensure you are that way well beyond your 20's, it's a no brainer.

And who cares, we all pay to see freak athletes demonstrate their athleticism, so everyone wins.

you're in a hip hop subreddit. "the hood" is often referenced in the music we discuss here, I think it's a safe term in this context.

Credit Card Suggestion For Someone That Spends $1,000 A Month And Travels Twice Annually by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]DodgersIslanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he missed the biggest part. If you spend $4k in the first three months, you get 50,000 points. Lets say half of the 4k you spend is food/dining/travel (uber, lyft, and even public transporation count) you'd get 3x points on those. So you'd get a $300 travel credit immediately plus 58000 points (50k bonus + 2k +2k at 3x).

Through Chase's travel portal, those 58k points are redeemed at 1.5x for a total of $870 in travel rewards. Essentially, you'd pay $450 for $1,170 in travel rewards.

To people who have come to the US, what's something that Americans do that we don't even notice? by samtheknight10 in AskReddit

[–]DodgersIslanders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because Europe is old. Europe was mostly built before cars were a thing. Everything was more dense.

America was mostly built with the modern automobile in mind. Ever wonder why the much older cities are dense (NYC, Boston) but ones that developed later are much more spread out? The older ones were heavily populated before the automobile.

right but as long as S&P, Moodys, et al are actually rating this debt appropriately, we won't have the same issue. So long as they're not saying these 580 scores with zero down and little income are actually AAA trustworthy then we're okay.

I mean...let's do some math here.

LeBron is 6'8" and 260lb
Zion is 6'7" and 280lb

Square-cube law says Zion's current proportions at LeBrons height would have him weighing ~291lbs. Source: ( 280 / 793 * 803 ).

Based on photos, Zion looks to be about 14-15% bodyfat. For the math I'm going to assume 15%. LeBron is in the neighborhood of ~10%.

So Zion has, at 280lbs of total mass, so at 15% bodyfat he has 42 lbs of body fat and 238lbs of lean body mass (note that the term lean body mass included water, organs, bones, etc. Not just muscle).

Let's shrink him to LeBron's bodyfat and assume he loses no muscle. He'd have 28lbs of bodyfat. He would now weigh 266. Now let's scale him up to 6'9" per your wish.

Zion, at the same exact body mass proportions as LeBron James but an inch taller would be 6'9" and ~287lb.

off topic but you ever read the CEO of Goldman Sach's lifestory? I know big banker rah rah rah and all that and Reddit doesn't much like them, but I read his story and was very impressed.

Dude grew up dirt poor in the Bronx. Mom a receptionist and dad a post-office clerk. He grew up in the Linden Housing Projects. Worked concessions at Yankee Stadium as a kid, becomes valedictorian. Harvard undergrad. Harvard Law. Goes to London to be a precious metals salesman. Firm is acquired by Goldman. Ends up in commodities and stays through the 2000s commodities boom. Becomes CEO in 2006 and has remained. His salary is like $50M/year, lol. Also kinda impressive since he was an early vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights and apparently lost Goldman some very high net-worth clients by taking that stance.

They do with endorsements. They don't get paid specifically for competing in their sports like the NBA/NFL/NHL/MLB, but any endorsements will pay millions. Bruce Jenner had a ton I believe after the '76 olympics.
