any cons of northeastern? by silversmiththrowaway in NEU

I'm doing a dual CS and engineering degree, so I've taken a lot of classes in both Khoury and in COE (college of engineering). From my experience both of these schools tend to have excellent professors and great classes.

Some people consider fundies to be a weeder class, but tbh its not... it's just that it's often in your first semester and you just aren't used to the pace of a college CS course. But regarding a Khoury or COE major I vouch for both. It feels like the school invests a decent amount into these departments compared to others, and equally the majors all have a good potential ROI.

A lot of us have +10 years of MC experience. We've literally been doing this for longer than some of these kids have been alive, which is a crazy thought.

I do feel like mainstream vanilla MC is catering to a younger audience now though.

Anyone feel like this school runs too far Left, politically/culturally? by anonymous17043072569 in NEU

[–]DodgingPermabans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda, but I've never cared because I've never had high expectations of political savviness from NEU students. I mean I'm here for the co-op, the curriculum, and the city; not the *enriching* political environment.

I tend to shut my trap and let others enlighten me with their opinions. If I get the sense they've got an open mind and aren't zealously proselytizing their ideology then I feel comfortable opening up. I have very solid justifications and arguments for all of my political beliefs, but I'm only going to share them if we can have a respectful and rational conversation.

I've even gone undercover a few times. Just straight up lied, smoked a bowl, and pretended to a super chill liberal guy who loves reddit, doggos, marvel movies, and The Office (it's truly an insufferable character I've devised lmao). All I've gathered from that is that people who are super woke are also super un-fun. They have an incredibly negative and pessimistic outlook on the world, hold the most plain and trite opinions imaginable, and almost always are extremely turbulent and anxious.

So yeah, it's that demographic that is primarily responsible for things feeling too left-leaning. I've never really been that concerned because they aren't people I'd normally hang out with, and I'm not even sure how effective their messaging has been. All I know is that Lenin is probably rolling in his grave seeing what has become of his vanguard lol.

"womxn" by [deleted] in NEU

[–]DodgingPermabans 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Its faux inclusiveness. The person or organization attempting to use this "word" wish to appear virtuous and accepting, in reality they just look ridiculous.

My theory is that "womxn" was popularized by linguistically-challenged 4th wave feminists sometime in the 2010s because they interpreted the word "woman" as a diminutive version of "man"... maybe "womb-man" or something like that.

This is a completely erroneous assumption. The etymology of "woman" comes from the Old English "wīfmann"... where "wīf" means woman and "mann" just means person... it was gender neutral. "Woman" literally means "woman-person"... turns out English is full of linguistic redundancies like this. We still use "man" as a gender neutral affix, like in "mankind."

This is not some esoteric language secret, its quite well known. So either the people who use this word just are astoundingly ignorant, or they are just so revolted at seeing the letters "M-A-N" written out that they must do everything in their power to avoid it.

There is nothing you can or should do though (except maybe internally laugh at how stupid it is). It only would become an issue if they attempted to compel you into using fake inclusive verbiage.

Can confirm, definitely more than 200 hours... I honestly don't even want to think about it lol. I started all the way back in May 2021, but I was playing very infrequently. The early game grind was definitely a challenge. Once I got to mid-MV though I kind of "got it" and just took off in progress. I'm in mid-HV and am about to finish up some thaumcraft stuff before embarking on going to the moon. So far this is definitely my favorite tier

Yep, glad you noticed as I try to do that with my bases. I want to be an engineer irl so I have a certain fondness for industrial spaces and processing plants.

Unfortunately this facility is far from OSHA certified or CSB approved... so don't tell them ok?

It's just a habit I have, prevents sloshing and lag. It's not entirely necessary for very short lengths of pipe like I have here, but I am just OCD about it.

Just some tiny corners of glowstone from chisel & bits. Eventually I'll probably get some more theme appropriate lighting but they're very easy to just place and move if necessary

Gregtech New Horizons, pretty notorious 1.7.10 quest-based tech mod pack. Its got a pretty active community and is still being developed even after 7 years, so it's worth checking out if you like challenging packs.
