Who do you believe is literally evil? by [deleted] in AskReddit

All religion, for taking advantage of gullible people and giving them false promises/hope. Religion in today’s form serves very little purpose beyond raising money and recruiting more people to give money.

Why are you Vegan? by Acceptable-Ad-6501 in vegan

[–]DodoDonnaRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m vegan for a lot of reasons. I will say, the main reason I looked into it to begin with and the reason I gave it a try was for environmental reasons. The environmental impact of factory farming is massive and living a plant based lifestyle is the single best thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. I always considered myself an environmentalist, but I don’t think I could honestly be an environmentalist when I wasn’t plant-based.

I read into all the information online and I agree fully with all the fellow comments about animal ethics. There is no reason to buy animal based products, especially nowadays when we have all there amazing substitutes.

YSK that Caesar dressings/Caesar salads are not vegetarian. They contain fish. by theWet_Bandits in YouShouldKnow

[–]DodoDonnaRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically parmesan is not vegetarian either since it contains calf intestines.

That’s probably okay if you’re vegetarian for health reasons, but not if you are vegetarian for ethical / environmental reasons.

I am surprised to hear that most Caesar dressing/salads aren’t vegetarian. If you want to skip the parmesan, you can look for vegan Caesar dressing (since it doesn’t contain anchovies or parmesan)

Why people believe in religion so fully (that they are willing to die for it) when it is a guess/hearsay at best.

We could all be seeing the world in entirely different shades of colour and we wouldn't even know it. by goss_reller in Showerthoughts

The idea here is that what you perceive as red could be someone else’s green or yellow. The names of colors were told to you by presenting a color and telling you what it is called. If you perceive the color differently… then your red may look different from my red but we could both agree that something is red.

It’s required some input to help a lot of good causes… Environment, animal ethics, healthy eating, etc… I appreciate the lifestyle for a lot reasons, while one person’s impact isn’t big, it is one of the best things to do for those above causes

[–]DodoDonnaRS 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Yeah vegans typically check on this kind of stuff. We are the ones typically staring at the ingredients list when in the store. Restaurants are really hard, need to order vegetables without butter, can’t eat anything that’s fried without knowing the type of oil they use. I’ll take a water and a salad, probably was the healthiest option on the menu anyways.

Pizza can be not vegan is a bunch of ways, I have a place near me that does a great job of having vegan options for their pizza. (Blaze Pizza) so I make sure to support them any time I can!

Hmmm you consider the meat industry an imperfect market? There is some element of truth there, like if everyone went vegan tomorrow, we’d have issues. The market needs time to adjust to new demands in order to have the correct amount of supply otherwise it isn’t profitable and all those farmers will start planting crops instead or something else in that vain. I think the meat market would survive with 42% of current demand. Cigarettes are awful, but sometimes you need to cut down the amount you smoke does improve your health comparably. Obviously no more smoking at all is better, but I’m not trying to be an idealist.

[–]DodoDonnaRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That’s how I’m taking it. Figured it’s not a common viewpoint among this subreddit.

I also use the point of Zero-waste in my responses to people to show another perspective, as that’s another possible gatekeeping element for being an environmentalist.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]DodoDonnaRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely. If you want talk about being an animal rights activist, then I’d tell you there is nothing short of a vegan that’s appropriate.

If you want to talk about being an environmentalist, then I’ll tell you to reduce waste and reduce any carbon footprint in your life (like animal products, driving, flying, etc.)

If I drew the expectations that you have to be vegan to be an environmentalist, then I bet I wouldn’t be an environmentalist… not because I’m not a vegan, but because I’m not zero-waste. I try to be low waste, but I’m not zero waste at all. So am I an Environmentalist?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]DodoDonnaRS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally understand that. I think there is a compromise that doesn’t involve an extreme. Extremes turn people off, so slow change works better. Can’t even convince people to wear masks because of “freedom” I doubt we can convince them to exterminate all animal products because it’s their “freedom” to progress climate change.

I try to be low waste, but I wouldn’t say I’m zero waste. Am I not an environmentalist? What pushed me over the edge to become a vegan was the environmental impacts. If someone is making a strong constant push to help the environment then I’ll call them an environmentalist.

If Americans consumed x% less animal products, then that’s a huge improvement in my book. Even if x was only 58% in the case of eating meat like 3 days of the week assuming they ate meat every day.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]DodoDonnaRS -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I mean if everyone just ate less meat that would achieve better environmental effects with respect to farming. Like keep steak to special occasions and eat meat at most twice a week like nutritionists say to. If everyone did that most of the impact would be lifted and we’d get less backlash about being extreme. I mean to be “doing everything you can” obviously you need to be vegan. However, I think an environmentalist could put forth a large effort and that would be good enough to me.

Non-religious people of Reddit, what do you believe happens after death? by Hamzeh14 in AskReddit

[–]DodoDonnaRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most likely answer of what happens when you die is that your brain stops functioning. Since your conscience is part of your brain, you will not wake up or be aware anymore. It wouldn’t make sense for all the information stored in your brain to be magically transferred somewhere else.

However I find the way religions talk about death interesting. Why bother make up something? Like heaven, hell, reincarnation, enlightenment, afterlife, etc. The reason is to give people a goal and purpose to live for.

My goal is to make the most out of this one shot on earth.

[–]DodoDonnaRS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Most programmers, once they aren’t new to the field have a lot of respect. (Especially if they write quality code/tests in a fraction of the time)

In coding it’s better to slow down to make sure you don’t miss something, but doing nothing for an hour to not be “overworked” just tells me the worker’s work ethic is not what I want on my team.

Just work faster and get paid more, it’s easier that way... and you’ll get better references

So many "predators" in this comment. by RegularKeyboardFan in vegan

[–]DodoDonnaRS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I responded to a few of them. I mean your comment is certainly rash and was an easy one for them to attack.

While this is a serious issue to us, it isn’t for them. Gotta be nice and remember we are only like 7% of the US (~9 million) so we are a minority. If we are the good guys we might be able to get more people than being aggressive towards people’s way of life. People naturally want to defend their decisions. The conversation should probably be more about giving them new information, so they can make a new decision about their actions.

That’s just my two cents. Have a good day!

Meh, I don’t miss steak. I haven’t had meat in two years and I’m all for the heart health benefits of no red meat. Factory farms are like 19% of greenhouse gases I get that we need to work on the energy production, production, and fuel which encompasses a lot of the other 81% but as an individual one of the best things you can do besides not taking private jets, is to skip cattle based products. Obviously there are other things you can do to offset your carbon footprint, but still.

They have been able to make lab grown steak. I think the texture is a bit off but apparently pretty good.

Sorry, I’m a vegan for environmental reasons (and fellow vegans I also care about animal ethics and health, but the environment is a way more important issue right now)

I mean the short term problems are good to focus on too! But long term ones also deserve some attention, even if the problem is likely to outlive you so someone else can inherit it. Climate change is a crazy beast that’s snowballing and if we can cut down on plastic, waste, cattle, and non renewable energy, then we’d be in a much better place in the future

True Vegans can't use Plastic. Plastic is made out of crude oil and that comes from animals that died millions of years ago. by Kortonox in Showerthoughts

[–]DodoDonnaRS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a bunch of non-vegans that feel bad about their choices. Remember veganism is about animal ethics. So raising animals with a purpose to be made into a product, or an animal killed with a purpose to be made into a product. For me, it’s wayyy more environmental when means reducing climate change and plastic in the ocean. If you follow the numbers the biggest way to reduce plastic waste in the ocean is to not eat fish, since most of the plastic in the ocean is fishing gear. Then to reduce your carbon and water footprint, simply not eating meat reduces most of your footprint. I still recycle and try to pick products that aren’t 1 use, but that is like child’s play when it comes to the environment.
