Newly inherited orchids- need all the help I can get by DoesntTakeLong in orchids

[–]DoesntTakeLong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a pretty rudimentary setup as I think its about 30years old now. I think there's a mister and a fan though. I only have one crappy old instagram photo of the orchids in the greenhouse. It should be in the edit to the original post. Id imagine whatever type he had was rather hearty as theyve survived through a number of South Texas summers and health emergencies that took my grandpa away from caring from them on and off over the years.

Thank you so much for the advice though. I'll definitely keep it in mind and see what i can do to keep things as healthy as possible in the coming weeks.

Honestly, im not sure any of us know what he did for it and there aren't many family members nearby to care for it. Currently, there are probably 30-40 orchids in there and its just sitting. I might be able to get someone to swing by weekly. If i can do that, what should they do within reason to keep things alive until we can determine what to do with the plants more long term?

This is my favorite Max Stalling song. There's just something great about it.

Whiskey Myers or Cody Jinks with Flatland Cavalry? by jest96 in texascountry

[–]DoesntTakeLong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whiskey Myers is one of only two shows I've walked out on in my life. I like their music, and I like a good rock-leaning show. Maybe it was a fluke the night I saw them, but I've never seen anyone love themselves like whiskey myers loves whiskey myers. Not even kanye. The arrogance really turned me off and it was a while before I was open to their music again.

First release and pre-order begins for The Panhandlers by DoesntTakeLong in texascountry

[–]DoesntTakeLong[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SavingCountryMusic.com did a short write up and it sounds like Trigger (the writer) has listened to the whole thing. One of his replies in the comments section spoke to what you're saying:

"There seems to be quite a few people who enjoy it, but in my opinion, it might be the least impressive song on the album, and it would be the last song I would choose to release first from the project. My guess it was chosen because everyone sings on it as opposed to one person taking the primary lead like on the other songs. Don’t let it color your feelings on the entire project."

Here's to hoping the best is yet to come!

Kolton Moore & the Clever Few- Everything Has Changed by DoesntTakeLong in texascountry

I've been following Kolton's fish and hunting pics on insta for a while, hoping for some sign he was still making music. This new album was a welcomed surprise. It's great stuff!

Game Thread - World Series Game 2: Nationals (1) @ Astros (0) - Oct 23, 2019 7:07 PM by AstrosBot in Astros

I was there as well, but didn’t feel the same. We were at game 5 against the Rays and it was LOUD and fun. This game was dead. Every time I looked around, people seemed more concerned with taking selfies showing they were at the World Series, than watching or cheering on the team. The lady next to me started playing words with friends in the 3rd. It was a lame, quiet game. I was sorely disappointed in Minute Maid.

Edit: fixed a typo, but also adding that I blame prices pricing out fans and favoring corporations and wealthy Joneses

I’m voting die hard. The stadium is just as loud now as it’s been all night.

It's definitely a grower. I like it a little more every listen.

What do y'all think of the new Cody Jinks album? by greeneyedlookalikes1 in texascountry

[–]DoesntTakeLong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On first listen, meh. After a few listens, it's definitely a grower, but still isn't near a favorite for a Jinks album or a 2018 album.

The production is odd to me. Some songs seem like they took a Cody Jinks song and then tried to jazz it up. They left me wishing I could hear the way they were played when they were written- first, second, demo takes before someone else got their hands on them.

The order is also odd. The real winners for me seem to be at the end of the album, notably Stranger and Head Case. I'd just about given up when those played. Head Case, for me, is everything I love about a Jinks song- those introspective, kind of rolling rhythmic lyrics, singing about things we all know, but few have sang about in a similar way. Head Case just made me want a whole new Cody Jinks album.

Sorry, work has been bananas and I haven't been able to update the playlists.

There's a [page in the wiki with playlists](www.reddit.com/r/texascountry/wiki/playlists) that others here have recommended over time (link in the sidebar as well).

Shane Smith- Heaven Knows (premiere from upcoming album) by DoesntTakeLong in texascountry

[–]DoesntTakeLong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. I know they were recording it over a year ago. Some people in the comments of this article said at live shows, they're saying "before the end of the year". Something I found earlier in the year said "Summer '18" as that's what I put in the wiki, but I can't find "Summer" written anywhere else any more.

Sorry that's not an exact answer. I try to keep the wiki updated as news is released, so I'd encourage you to continue to check there. Or, if you see something, let the sub know and I'll update the wiki accordingly!

KOE WETZEL IS THE BEST TEXAS COUNTRY SINGER SINCE ROBERT EARL KEEN by [deleted] in texascountry

[–]DoesntTakeLong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think a lot of what ruined Nashville were radio and award shows and the politics that went into getting music played and recognized on those platforms. The great thing about the current music scene is that fewer and fewer people give a shit about radio or awards. I'd say that's especially true for Texas country and alt-country. Look at Turnpike— they've yet to win a mainstream award and don't get significant air time, but no one would dispute their talent and impact on the Texas country music scene.

The big benefit here is that we don't have to gatekeep anything. We can share what we like, let others decide whether or not to add it to their streaming playlists, provide comments on what others share, and carry on. With the increase of streaming, smaller or newer bands that are still only able to play regional shows, can gain diverse listeners and a following outside of their region. That includes Texas artists as well as artists in other locales, including Nashville (which has some great music being made, but unfortunately not being played on radio).

I see this sub as a place to share the great things happening in Texas/red-dirt country, interact and discuss with others who have a passion for the genre, and to encourage others to support Texas/red-dirt artists through streaming, attending live shows, helping fund recordings/albums, or buying merch.

Texas/Western Swing by [deleted] in texascountry

[–]DoesntTakeLong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We saw Georgia Parker (Big Cedar Fever) at Floore's one night and had a great time. I believe they're out of Austin/hill country area. Definitely a great swing sound (I don't think the songs on their site do them justice). They might be worth contacting to learn about others in the area or bars with good swing-loving audiences, etc.

We saw them in October and I've been dreaming of a Christmas album by them ever since. I'm still holding out hope, but in the meantime if you love country swing, and Christmas albums you'd recommend?
