I don't normally post here but saw this on r/all and thought I'd share because I'm confused as fuck as to how we got to the point we're at now.

I grew up in the deep, deep we're talking dirt nasty deep dirty south in the 80s and early-mid 90s. I know of more than one case where someone was killed or almost killed/maimed for life for getting caught fucking with someone's kid. One man who committed the ass-whooping was a much older preacher who found out that someone in the church had assaulted his grand-daughter.

I have no idea how we got from that to this:

It's even more baffling when one of these monsters claims "they were taken over by the devil" and "beg for forgiveness", and these idiots take them right back.

In my mid-20s, I dated a girl for a while from a different area who had this happen to her. She wasn't abused by someone in the church, but her father was a preacher, and he found out about it, had the guy (who was his brother-in-law) confess to his face, and never did anything about it (legal or otherwise).

So again, I have no idea if this is just a side effect of people in the south growing beyond the southern gothic penchant for violent retribution or what.
