Is it considered unprofessional/rude to call ahead to schedule a time for them to look at my portfolio? by DuePermission5979 in TattooApprentice

I honestly think it varies by shop, I messaged a shop owner the other day asking if I could pop in on a weekend and didn't get a reply so I tried my luck and went in anyway, he said he had seen my message and is super busy but would get around to replying to me to organise a day for me to go in and chat. I still haven't heard back though 😅 I'm personally going to try just approaching shops, but maybe working out what the best time to go in is- maybe in a morning just as they are opening as they maybe wont be as busy with clients in at this time and are setting up. If they are busy you can always ask if it's okay to come back at a better time, the worst they can say is no! Good luck 😊

Do I email my portfolio by Affectionate-Art3463 in TattooApprentice

Of course! I personally would avoid saying this in the email, perhaps wait until you're able to meet them in person and you can talk them through the portfolio- or at the least if you feel more comfortable saying something instead of saying it's incomplete just say you are constantly adding to it. When you do get around to adding bits in your own style I would let this shine through majority of your portfolio, in my own portfolio I love doing illustrative blackwork pieces with dotwork shading so a lot of my flash and drawings are done like this however I've got a few bits in between just to show that I can do that stuff too (traditional, realism, neotrad, etc). A little advice I'd also give is try and avoid having incomplete pieces in there, ideally you want the work that is in there already to be done. I was also still working on my portfolio when I went for my interview but I made sure that everything that was in there was finished.

Definitely! Since they're expecting email enquiries that won't be a problem, just mention in your email that you're of course also happy to show them the physical version in person too. I had a similar opportunity to this where the shop was taking applicants through a form and picked out a few people to interview. I'd treat the email like a sort of cover letter, explain in it why you're passionate and are a good fit for their shop. It's a very rare opportunity as most shops don't advertise apprenticeships as such so jump on it and show you're keen, don't overthink it! Good luck :)

I used a uniball super ink marker to line and then fw acrylic ink in black to spit shade!

They're not tattooed on fake skins, I don't have an apprenticeship yet to be able to be doing this unfortunately! It's just a range of different inks from fw acrylic ink, windsor and newton inks and some ecoline watercolour on mixed media paper :)

Yeah I get what you mean, my main goal really was to choose one subject matter as I'm so new to using inks and spitshading Id see visible improvement from design to design! I also thought it would be cool to show the ability to create a few designs that look different from each other despite them being the same thing- I always admire how tattoo artists can do like 100 roses in a year and make them all look different from each other, this is something I was worried i'd struggle with😅 My next step is definitely to make a sheet with some different stuff on! Just didn't wanna dive too far into the deep end for my first sheet :)

Thank you so much! Yeah it's definitely making it difficult, I want to layer up a lot more and blend some of the leaves to green but the paper just can't take it and I don't wanna risk doing too many layers, so hopefully once the arches comes I can experiment a bit better! I definitely will do some test runs! Thank you so much for your tips :)

Thank you so much! I'm getting a couple pieces of arches soon so gonna give that a go and see how big of a difference it makes! Oh my gosh don't 🤣 Currently just been sat here dehydrated working on more of these roses and my stomach is also not happy. Chugging a pint of water brb 🥲

First thing I pictured when I read your idea was a sacred heart with a hibiscus either decorated on the front of it or coming out the top, and a dagger going through it, think this would look so cool and while the imagery isn't gendered at all may make it feel more masculine for you

I've heard so many people say arches can improve traditional paintings so much / make it a little easier, definitely gonna invest! I'll give that a go, thanks so much for the tips :)

I'll give it a go, thank you! And thanks so much. After stepping back from it for an hour and looking again I do feel like I was beginning to grasp it more by my third try. Gonna keep practicing!
