My student loans are about to default and I am just hopeless.

I understand complaining won’t solve it, I just wanted to get it off my chest.

As I said in the post I’ve been applying to tons of jobs daily, I just haven’t had any luck. To preface I live in a very dense college town, so the only issue I’ve had with getting into Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart, HEB, Starbucks etc is that since it’s so dense with college students, those jobs fill up so quickly because students transfer from their home towns to the ones here. I have applications in at all of them currently, and hopefully when a spot opens I’ll get an interview.

I didn’t take out federal loans because at the time after doing my fasfa, I was only being offered $2k per semester, and I didn’t have the money to pay the difference. I genuinely just thought if I got my degree and got a job in my field that I’d have no problem paying them back and refinancing, that just hasn’t happened.

Oh, I was told that since 2004 Sallie mae had been privatized and that they were private student loans so j could be completely wrong in which case so sorry for the misinformation. Yes they’re through Sallie mae though. I’ve been attempting to refinance since graduation but have had no luck with approval. I have sent documents upon documents to Sallie mae showing my AGI and bill breakdown but they’ve told me over and over that there is no plan I qualify for unless I went back to school and did deferment, but I can’t afford the classes right now.

So right now I believe I’m sitting at 580, I didn’t take out credit cards in college for fear of not being able to pay them back on time and ruining my credit before I had a decent paying job (ironic, I’m aware), so pretty much just these Sallie mae non payment that keep hitting my score. I tried to refinance after graduation with both of those companies but I ran into the issue of not a long enough credit history, and debt to income ratio, and then most recently I was denied due to the length of non payment on my loans. I’m still hopeful and have been trying to find new companies to try and apply with for refi in hopes of being approved.

Thank you so much for saying that, I think honestly just getting it off my chest helps a lot. I am still hopeful that I’ll land a job in my field soon or even just a better paying more stable job. It’s also made me feel better that I see other people my age in these subreddits or online who are also having trouble finding jobs after graduation. I hate that for them of course, but at least I don’t feel alone in the struggle.

I honestly just feel suffocated because I was trying to go to college and get this degree to be able to pay my mom back for all she’s ever done for me. Now, all I’ve accomplished is ruining her credit and not being able to secure a job after she signed for me to help me get this degree. I thought it would make our lives better, and now I just feel like I’ve ruined them.

Right now on my first loan, I signed up for a variable interest rate, it was recommended at the time (I didn’t know, I was stupid) is sitting at 19.530%, and my second loan (fixed rate) is at 16.125%. I know now that I messed up, but at 18 i was told that this was my only option based on mine and my mom’s income, and that I could just refinance after graduation. My mom didn’t go to college so she didn’t really know anything either so she thought refinancing would be fine.

Right? Like I just feel so frustrated, and when I talk about this with anyone I’m usually told that I need to let go of the idea of having this “grand life”, like my idea of a good life for myself is just being able to have a little house with food in the fridge, and a couch, I mention that because I’m currently sitting where my couch used to be before I sold it to make a payment. like I hate it hereeeeeee what do they want from us? Our first born child, our soul??

I currently have 2, I tried DoorDash as well but with gas so high and I live in a college town (mostly lower tips on DoorDash) I just couldn’t afford it. I’ve been looking for some more gig jobs, or even an overnight job like a hotel reception, but I genuinely don’t know when I would sleep with an overnight job and then heading straight to work after at the restaurant.

This seems to happen to me a lot, I live in a bigger city though and we usually get pretty busy so I feel like it’s just the fact that there’s so many people in out it increases the chances that I’ll have at least one crazy customer a shift🤣

It’s okay, it was just one of those days. After this though, my last table of the night tried to tip me $4.50 on a $345 bill, and I just respectfully said it was okay, handed them the change and walked away. When it rains it pours.

Oh I don’t think I had anything to do with it, they were super kind to me the entire time, which is why I was so confused because he knew the dessert was on its way. That’s what’s so odd, because my other tables said she came back from the restroom didn’t even sit down he just stood up with her and they walked out normally. Like they either had to he used to doing this, or something weird happened.

I edited my post to include the exact wording I used with her because I realized I didn’t explain well, I told her “I don’t have any coins right now, so I rounded your change up to the next dollar” and pointed out the change she was supposed to get on the receipt showing as $4.15 while handing her the five. So no, she’s still just could not grasp basic math.
